Photo Observation

Attribute: Google

Theme: Wild Card

Description: My self-given theme was horror as I find lighting related to horror so interesting but I didn’t want the classic black and white so I found this image. I really like how there is color but the photo still is kind of scary. I think its really cool how there are the three different colors shining in but there is very little spillage between the colors, they are all in their distinctive sections. I also think the angle and texture of each lighting block is really interesting as the streakiness and elongated angles add a horrific element to the photo. Finally, I like how the angle elongated the shadow of the man because it twists it into something even more terrifying.

Theme: Surreal

Description: I chose this image because I was having a hard time finding surrealist images that had actual realistic lighting or lighting in any sense but this one was the closest to that. There are two different lighting sections in this picture as there is the brighter amber setting sun and then the darker green grass and I think there is a cool contrast between the two. The girl in the photo is also lit in a really cool way as the majority of light is backlight so it makes it look like she has a glowing aura around her that adds to the surreal theme.

4 Seasons Lighting

Gels Used: R013 (straw tint), R052 (light lavender), R021 (golden amber), and R043 (deep pink) shining on the person. R358 (rose indigo) for the purple wash on the sides and the bottom cyc. R023 (orange) for leaves on the side. R348 (purple jazz) for the top cyc.

Gobos Used: Breakup gobo on the side leaves.

Description: I wanted to create a gradient on the person like the gradient of a setting sun so I used the brightest lights/colors on the center of the person and faded outwards color wise and intensity wise like a setting sun. I used the breakup gobo to create a leaf pattern on the wall like falling leaves and used a purple background one, because I thought it provided a cool contrast to the leaves, and two because it was also the furthermost color in the setting sun.

Gels Used: R078 (trudy blue) for front light. R007 (pale yellow) for side wash. R369 (tahitian blue) for side wash, top and bottom cyc, and center stained glass. R047 (light rose purple) for side wash. R347 (belladonna rose) for SR glass. R010 (medium yellow) for SL glass.

Gobos Used: Window gobo used for the three stained glass.

Description: I used the window gobos to create the effect of stained glass shining down from multiple angles in the colors generally associated with easter. I created a gradient of color along each wall in easter colors one, to further the idea of stained glass as I feel that is a defining feature of gothic churches, and two, because it brought brightness and color which I feel works for the easter part of the prompt and the sunrise part. I used a blue for the front light as the washes made the person look a little yellow so I used the blue to cancel that out.

Gels Used: R061 (mist blue) at full for the top lights, at 75% for the side lights on the person. R369 (tahitian blue) for highlighting the water in the circle and as the bottom cyc. R069 (brilliant blue) for the rest of the water wash. R010 (medium yellow) for top cyc.

Gobos Used: Dots gobo for all the water on the bottom.

Description: I used the majority of the lights to create a water effect on the lower portion of the stage surrounding the person and then brightened up the color to add on another layer in the center circle. I then used bright yellows on the person in carrying intensities as to show the beating sun on the person but not alter the look of the water.

Gels Used: R366 (Jordan blue) for front light, mid SR and SL wash, and back light and top and bottom cyc. R361 (Hemsley blue) for SR person light and USR and USL wash. R055 (lilac) for SL person light and DSR and DSL wash.

Gobos Used: None.

Description: I wanted to give the idea of white light hitting the person and the walls without having to be void of color as I feel winter is full of some more muted colors so I hit everything with a trio of colors (all kind of muted primaries) that all worked to cancel each other out and create white where the lights hit but colors where they shone to give the effect of both color and white. I also made sure not to use gobos as I wanted the look to seem very simple and clean.

Spring Photo Observation

Attribute: Google Search

Theme: Spring

Description: I chose this photo for a few reasons. One is because I like how visible the sun beams are. When I think of spring I think of sun beams probably because there is something new about that and I often think of the sun in the spring. I also chose this image because of where the light is coming from. The sunlight looks like it is coming from a rising sun and another thing that comes to mind when I think of Spring is the idea of rebirth and newness so the direction fits. I also liked in this picture how the sunlight illuminated the bits of orange on the ground because those warm tones are such a stark contrast to the rest of the image and the sunlight draws out that warmth even more.

Theme: Advertisement/Desire

Description: I chose this picture for two reasons. One was because I thought it was interesting and effective how bright the lights were against the dark night background as I feel that helped the advertisement even more. The other reason I chose it was because I thought it was interesting that based on where the lights were placed, the angles, and the strength of the beams, a slight hourglass effect takes place as it is brighter right where the lights are but it fades towards the center and the edges. I chose to exaggerate that effect in my lighting design.

Theme: St. Patrick’s Day

Description: I chose this image because I found it interesting that there is lighting both from below and above yet the subject is so large that there is still a dark band around the center. I also really like how cool the green light is and how it’s more on the blue side. To me, this makes me think of those pictures of ships at the bottom of the sea that are being excavated or photographed which adds an eerie and forgotten nature to the photo.

  1. Source: I found this through a google search
  2. Theme: Single Artificial Light Source
  3. I chose this image because my go-to thought with this assignment was a side light or a frontal light so I wanted to do something different. I like this one in particular because the back light is so barely apparent that there is just a white line of light around the subject’s head. I think the relation of source to subject in this picture is really interesting and not something that is seen very often. I also like the slight color on the hair because it normally wouldn’t be seen but because there is such an absence of color in the rest of the picture, the color there is more apparent.

Lighting Observation

Date: 03/10/2022

Time: 5:25pm

Location: In and Out in Dallas, Texas

Objective Description: The sunlight hits the palm trees in front of the restaurant and the sign of the restaurant.

Subjective Description: The light hit the large yellow sign at just the right angle where there were little to no shadows. This created an interesting effect where the sign was perfectly lit but there were no shadows that would make the sign and the building seem more real. It reminded me of a badly rendered video game that didn’t take into account how shading works. This also created an eerie and otherworldly feeling as shadows are usually what show that the light is real so the absence made it feel like something was wrong and I wasn’t in this world.

Lighting Observation

Date: March 3, 2022

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Second floor of CV Starr

Objective Description: The sun was beginning to set and could be seen shining through a bare tree.

Subjective Description: The soft pink glow shown through the jagged outline of the tree. As the leaves have fallen, each branch and stick could be seen in great detail. The symmetry of the tree provided a sense of balance and was enhanced by the deep black lines of the backlit tree. Each space between the branches carried a soft bowl of pastel pink light.

Attributes: “Neon Underground” image on imgur

Theme: Night Life

Description: I chose this image because when I think of Night Life I think of harsh neon lights as well as a dirty or grimy aspect and I think this image captures both. The pink/magenta is complementary to the green in terms of complementary lights but visually the specific hues of green and pink used do not mesh well and create an eerie feeling. The interspersed black lights change the punk rock images on the walls from normal drawings to illuminated scary glowing figures which add to the effect. The pink lights also emphasize the dirty and wetness of the street which adds to the idea of night life
