Lighting Observation

Date: 2-22-22

Time: 5:15 pm

Location: Bottom floor of the engineering building

Objective Description: There were TVs and lights with yellow and blue on them shining through a crossed pattern on the windows of the big data lab which then shone the color on the floor of the hallway.

Subjective Description: The yellow and blue lights created a series of triangles on the ground whose edges blurred to a glow. The shapes were a stark contrast to the dim and drab hallway they shone in like an illuminating pathway cutting into the darkness.

Photo Observation

Attributes: From “Top 10 Ice Caves in the World”

Theme: Cold

Description: I chose this image because of the wide variety of blues there are in the lighting. Blue is often associated with the cold and there are so many from the dark blues on the bottom of the image and around some of the ice formations to the neon blues at the entrances of the cave. The combination of these types of blues provides a really interesting depth to the image. I also love the texture of the image and feel that it adds to the theme. When I think of cold and ice I also think of sharp and jagged edges which the cave in this picture does have but it has them in a really interesting way where they are almost like spherical craters like on the moon. I also like that you can only see the shadow of the man in the image as it makes it feel isolating which also relates to the theme in my opinion.

Photo Observation

Date: 2/17/2022

Time: 3:23pm

Location: My living Room

Objective Description: Sunlight shining through the small window at the top of the front door onto the wall next to the door.

Subjective Description: The light cuts across the wall creating a sharp line leading downward. The shape of the window illuminates the wall creating the image of a sun out of the light itself. The image seems like it was created out of thin air, a bright mark against the stark background of nothingness.

Romance Photo Observation

Attributes: Taylor Swift “Lover” Music Video

Theme: Romance

Description: When I heard the theme I knew this was the photo that I had to choose. Taylor Swift’s ‘Lover’ is what I immediately think of when I hear the word romance and this image encapsulates that. The pink lights obviously give off the sense of romance as the color is often representative of love and Valentine’s Day. There is also something romantic about the vibrance of the light in the background yet the two figures in the front are lighted differently showing a sharp contrast and making it feel like they are the only two people in the world. You can also tell that this picture is from Taylor’s point of view as the white/blue light from above hits mainly her, isolating her further from the lights in the background. This image to me is the epitome of romance.

Light Observation

Date: 2/10/22

Time: 10:00pm

Location: Parking lot behind Breslin

Objective Description: The moon shining through a small hole in the quickly moving cloud coverage. The entire sky was cloudy but there was a small hole that showed the moon.

Subjective Description: Little light was coming through the dark gray cloud coverage. There was a faint glow of the moon behind the clouds that gave the impression of its location but was otherwise lost. The clouds were quickly moving yet remaining a covered canopy-like sheet. All of a sudden, a hole opened in the clouds and the moon shone through like spilling white paint on coal. It was only for a moment as the clouds quickly closed again but while it was out, the sky brightened to a silvery gleam.

Sunset Post

Date: November 19, 2020
Time: 4:40pm
Location: Area between constitution and graduate housing
Theme: Sunset
Description: The texture of the clouds reflects the color of the sun creating a multicolor effect with each ridge holding on to a different color. You can tell where the sun is because the peach color is on one side of the ridges and the blue-gray is on the other. There’s a gradient of color that changes from a pale yellow to a purple/peach as the light travels away from the sun. The dark tree cuts across the colorful sky creating a deep contrast and the vibrant colors of the sun are contrasted against the dark green of the grass below and reflected off the windows on the building.
