Lighting Observation 3

1) 8:27 AM, 2/10/14, outside Liberty/Repulic Halls

2) Snow falling from a tree in front of a newly risen morning sun.

3) As a cool breeze blew through the air, the branches of the tree shook. From the crisp green pine leaves fell the dusty powder of a new snow. From behind, the bright, fresh rays of a new sun hit the snow, making the snowflakes look like shiny crystals falling through the air. The yellow rays reflected off of the snow around it, giving a golden shine to the buildings and cars in the background. The whole scene was surreal.  This is the beauty of winter.

Lighting Observation 1

1) Thursday 1/30/14, 7:41 AM, my dorm room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: At the back wall of our dorm room, there is a window which looks out to Oak Street. This morning, the light from the newly risen sun was streaming in through the blinds.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I looked at the window, I noticed a bright white light streaming in through between the blinds. The light stretched its fingers across the floor, creating a magnificent piece of artwork on the stained blue carpet on the floor. The light appeared pure white, like the color of a freshly fallen snow. To wake up to this beautiful image was a sign that today was going to be a good day.

Light Observation 10

1) 4/8/13 11:30 A.M. Outside Emily Lowe

2) The bright sun on the first nice spring day.

3) For the first time since my time being here I saw people on the quad outside Lowe. There were people everywhere. For the first time I didn’t feel like the campus was full of individual students. Instead it was a group of kids together in a single community. We were all celebrating the glorius spring sun after a cold and windy past few weeks. My friends were doing acrobatics, laughing talking, just spending time together, and I loved every second of it, all because of the sun we hadn’t seen in a while.

Photo Observation: Hot #7

2. Photo from http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/usa/images-8/blazing-sun.jpg

3. Theme: Hot

4. Looking at this photo, my mouth begins to dry and I become parched. When I thought of the theme “hot”, I immediately thought desert sun. There is something about the sun shines through the clouds  and spreads it’s beams wide. The variety of reds, oranges, and yellows, fill the sky creating an image of fire in the sky. Sunlight always warms you and is correlated with “hot”. Even on the coldest day, everything seems that much better when you are in the sun instead of shadows. It’s heat is a strong memory in the brain and therefore, the light itself triggers that feeling of hot power beating up against your skin. This picture is a perfect visual for that feeling. When you look at it, you get a little tingle against your skin because your mind wants to experience the sensation of heat it gets when it see’s the same image in the sky.

Photo Observation: Powerful

3) Powerful

4) The feeling of being high on a mountain top is pure excitement and awe. I had the chance to climb Mt. Vesuvius in Naples a few years back. We drove up half the mountain to a stopping point. My uncle, his new wife, my dad, my sister, and I got out and started to walk up the winding gravel trail. It was steep and at times it was hard, but being with my family made the entire experience so great and fun. However, nothing could compare to the feeling of finally making it to the top. I walked closer to the edge and looked out over the sea and the horizon, across all of Naples. The sun was high in the sky and being so far up, being able to see so much of the world, it was an overpowering sensation. It was like I had conquered the world.

Light Observation 1

1) 1/31/13, 11:00 A.M. Walking to class near Playhouse

2) The sun was behind me casting a shadow. A female student in front of me was wearing gold sequin covered boots. The boots reflected the suns light over my shadow with each step in a circular area of little specs of light.

3) Every time the student took a step the sun shimmered off her boots and onto the ground. As I was walking I noticed I conformed to her pace, keeping her footsteps inside my shadow. The way each sequin of the boots made the light dance across the ground and in contrast with my dark shadow gave me a feeling of excitement. Each footstep had a different pattern of the reflected light and I became almost enticed by the reflections. It was something so simple, but it made me think about what the sun was doing and how I was the only one who paid any attention to it.

Photo Observation #11

2) Photo taken by Nic Christopher. Taken at lookout point near Blasket Islands on Dingle Peninsula on April 15 at around 3:20 PM.

3) THEME: Unreal

4) DESCRIPTION: This picture was taken while on a hike overlooking the Blasket Islands while I was with my family touring the Dingle Peninsula. Yes this is taken from a similar area as last week’s photo however I think that this photo and the lighting employed in this photo are fantastic. I think that the lighting of this photo is spectacular and almost makes the photo become something more of a photoshopped background or a dream than an actual photo. I other that raising the contrast of this photo I did not do anything in terms of post production to this photograph.

When I tried to think of something UNREAL, the first ideas that came to mind were abstract images or pictures of fire or stunning sunsets. What I realized is that those things are not unreal in terms of lighting. What is unreal is when the lighting can play tricks on someones perception and when lighting can offer a grand contrast in an area that already seems somewhat dream like. The first thing that I liked in this photo was the Rainbow. I think that a rainbow is simply unreal. It is always there and appears to be a tangible thing, however it can never be touched or reached. Rainbows are also stunningly beautiful and extremely colorful. The other element of lighting that makes this image seem so unreal is the contrast between where the sun is shining and where the rain is falling. With the panorama shot, you are able to see that there is a small squall hitting one part of the farm land while the sun is beating down in the background. It juxtaposes a scary and strong storm onto a beautiful and bright scene of a green and luscious hillside.

Standing on the mountain looking out on this land seems to give me a feeling of being king of the land. Watching the elements interact with the land and the animals. All of the contrast is blended with the illusion of the rainbow and it just makes me wonder if this place is really an actual place.

Lighting Moment #9

  1. Wednesday March 28th 8:30 am Hempstead turnpike
  2. It’s a cloudy morning so the sun is trying to shine through them.
  3. It’s enough to brighten everything but there is a dim tone to everything. The sun is trying its hardest to break through the rolling clouds but only making a difference on the edges. Where you can see glows of light it’s a bright auburn that brings life to everything making the edges of the clouds seem as if they are on fire. There is a sharp contrast between the light quality above the cloud and below. It’s almost up lifting but then the clouds are coming over and blocking all of the sunlight creating a gloomy start to the day

Lighting observation 8

1. 3/21/12, 8:54, leaving the student center

2. There was fog everywhere and the fog was reflecting the yellow light of the street lamps so it looked like the sun.

3. I was walking back from the student center to my room when I noticed the fog everywhere and then the street lights. The fog was bouncing the yellow light of the street lamps so much that they all looked like one big yellow light. It looked like the sun had not set yet when it have obviously set or there would not have been fog. It was a really strange sight but it was really beautiful.

Photo Observation #5 – The Wiener is…

Edgard Garrido/Reuters – http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1PxBd7/www.guardian.co.uk/news/gallery/2012/mar/01/24-hours-in-pictures/

Single Light Source

This dog seems trapped, limited to the space that the light touches. He stands out in his red outfit, while surrounded by the monotonous businessmen at the top. The area is like a spotlight, the dog is the topic of this photo. He may not pick the best outfits, but it is this outfit and this lighting that makes the dog a hot subject. Design Choices. The dog seems confused on where to go, where does he walk to, can he escape? There are so many questions that could be running through this dogs head. I don’t think this dog is sad. The light is natural and the illumination gives a positive tone. The shadows of the business men are reaching out towards the dog, but just barely miss him. The sun is glowing vibrantly behind the businessmen, casting these long shadows. There is a battle between the dogs and the shadows, but the dog, with his vivacious costume, is winning. I guess he is the WIENER! (bad pun, sorry)
