4. Theatre has always been amusing to me. The one element in theatre that always makes me think is the lighting design. Why is the designer doing this? That’s the question I ask regarding this picture. Why would four sharply lit spotlights be lit and positioned this way? Regardless of the reason, it is wonderful to look at. The sharply lit red overlaps the piercing orange and the radiant green. Completing the design is the faint blue, overlapping the orange and green. The small overlapped parts create four odd white colors that lay in between the shining colors aside them leaving this ascetically pleasing display of lights. This set-up of lights isn’t normally used but it make you wonder why it would be. Despite it’s abnormality, it is still a wonder to look at.

2. A big spectacle of colored spotlights on a stage moving to a beat.

3. In the musical “West Side Story” the big show stopper is the song and dance number “Mambo”. It should always be done big. In my production, almost every dancer gets their own large, shining spotlight each with a color coordinating with their pose and costume. The first spotlight hits a dancer with a saturated red, emphasizing her intense movements. A light, pale blue spotlight shines on an other couple as they dance slowly and seductively. Behind them is a dancer using big and open dance moves as a sharp, green light shines down on him. It is these precise lights that make the dance number look amazing.

4) For some reason, I strongly dislike the color green. For me, this picture represents the feeling that green gives me. I do not feel freedom in green and it makes me feel limited, less creative and closed in. The fluorescent green color seems to be trapping and limiting this girl more than the walls themselves.

2. A tall green evergreen tree with multi-colored lights, ribbons, ornaments and a star on top.

3. The highlight of the Christmas season is when I see my family’s beautiful Christmas tree shining for the first time. The tree is always covered with twinkling rope lights. The tree sparkles with colors varying from reds, yellows, greens, violets, golds, silvers, and pinks. These colors reflected off the glimmering silver tinsel which is wrapped around the lush branches. The ornaments dangle and complement the vibrant colors of the blinking lights. The star atop the tree is really a sight to see. It glows a wonderful shining gold that truly encompasses the natural beauty of the tree.

2. This was a long array of shops that had neon signs, street lamps and big bright letters on the top of every shop.

3. The pitch black night surrounds the bright and highly illuminated strip around my area. Everywhere you look is a different color. The large lettering on the top of the building, entices customers to walk through their doors. From light greens, reds, violets, ambers, whites and pinks, a wide array of lights glow across the sidewalk. In the cold and dark night, this colorful and actively lit area is where you would want to be.

4. It is the crack of dawn on a desolate beach, and the sun has begun to light up the deep blue sky.  Shining over the horizon, rays of red, orange and yellow cast down upon the hot sand.  The beaming sun shines down on two lush trees creating long, dark shadows along the ground. The silhouettes of the trees lie on the seemingly blue sand that hasn’t been fully illuminated by the sun’s inviting rays.  The golden light can fool anybody into thinking they are in a dream.

4. Over the icy mountains, streaks of violet, teal and green race down from the deep blue sky. These shimmering, cool colors give a sensation of shivers and the need to be warm. The chilly water reflects the colors of  the beautiful, frosty rainbow above. As the frozen mountain tops stand below, the frigid colors of the aurora borealis put on a fantastic spectacle of illumination. This wonderful show of lights is nature’s finest curtain call.

2. There are 14 fluorescent lights on creating a simply wash in the room with tints of green and yellow.

3. I feel sick. I am worn down and look ugly. When I look a my arms, its as if I can see my skin melting into my bones. The light pierces my pupils and blinds them. It is late. Very late. I struggle to sleep. I want to, but even if I had the time, the light is so strong, so present in the room, I cannot. There is no beauty. The way the lights fills the room, eliminates all happiness. Everything looks sickly, stuck in a dormant state. I sit her and push through the pain and emptiness of the fluorescent lights above, hoping for an end to this madness, thirsty for something good to look at.

3. Theme: Storm’s Brewing

4.  This photo reminds be of a storm brewing because of the colors and the layers. When I think of storm’s brewing I think of the clouds. I knew I wanted to find a dark blue, but I was also motivated to use green because of Sam Newby’s post about the coming of a tornado and how the sky turns green. The movement of the light in this photo is cyclical and layered which reminds me of the clouds before a coming storm. The picture overall makes me feel anxious, which is how I feel when a storm is coming. I think the lighting in this picture is effective in creating the same effect, only dramatizes as the sky does prior to a storm.

THEME: Dealer’s Choice

I think I first came across this when perusing The Daily What (a la memebase), with a caption about the cool effects of long exposure photography and the emergence of light art – I didn’t really read it, I was just captivated by the pretty. Besides just how cool it looks and how much talent this must have taken, you can really get drawn in to the story being told. Maybe it’s a social commentary on our public school system, maybe youth in general. The asian script on the wall hangings could even be commenting a country in particular – or maybe it was just a perfect setting for someone to experiment with glow sticks. Either way, it’s an incredibly thought provoking image aided by the manipulation of light, color AND a camera, which I just find impressive.
