Journal Entry #2

The Theme is Romance

While the bottom is plain and ordinary when one sleeps, there is a beautiful sky full of stars and endless possibilities for whether things could go. Though the people around them see the couple as ordinary, their love for each other feels like they have reached beyond their home and stretched out into the night sky.

While there are no actual people in this photo, from the lighting alone you can tell that this dinner is a romantic occasion. The dim lighting and red sign lights are classic lighting choices used in romantic settings. The red color represents the feeling of love and romance, and the dim lighting shut outs the background of an environment and focuses just on the scene in the light. This makes romantic pictures and settings feel much more intimate.

This photo shows a romantic dinner setting, complete with candles, fairy lights, and flowers, all next to a window with a scenic view. I find this lighting romantic because the sun is setting, giving the sky many soft colors. There is no harsh overhead lighting, rather the indoor setting is lit by the warm candles and fairy lights. The shadows the light casts on the material of the table cloth and chairs also make the scene very cozy and welcoming.

Description:  The warm, subdued lighting in this photo is what pushes me to think romance.  There is warm, yellow color emitting from the candles and fireplace. The light is just bright enough for those who will sit in the table to see each other but not bright enough for them to be distracted by their surroundings. Therefore creating a more intimate setting if a couple were to sit in a place like this.

Theme: Romance

Romance is what individuals make of it, and for a wedding it takes two people in love to make a marriage work. From lots of movies and shows weddings are fairly commonly shown on the beach at dusk. Coming from someone who hates the beach during the day, one of the most romantic things in my mind is meeting your partner at the beach as the sun is setting, the air is turning cool and the torches are lit, and you can just sit there and watch the sea as it slowly fades away into night, that to me is romance.

I was struggling with finding an image for this theme, but after scrolling through many images, this one caught my eye. To me, romance is more than just romantic love – it’s a feeling about anything, whether that’s a person or a place or a situation, and the lighting of this image feels very romantic to me, on many levels. The street lamps lining this bridge are the perfect brightness for maintaining a romantic tone without obscuring the people or view present. The rippling reflection of those lamps draw the eye away from the total darkness under the bridge and out into the gorgeous open air. And the sky ties it all together with this soft, delicate lilac color, more periwinkle in some places and more cotton candy in others, but neither too bright nor too dim. There’s a visibility in this image that can get lost in efforts to “set the mood,” as romantics are wont to do. You can see everything happening here, but you see it gentler thanks to the warm glow of the lamps and the lavender haze of the sky. It’s an image that feels nice to look at, and one I could easily romanticize.

Romance

Picture taken by my friend at our senior prom June 8th, 2022.

Theme: Romance

The lighting in this photo reminds me of romance because of the pinks and purples normally associated with love. Rather than seeing the fiery red colors often associated with passion, this moment conveys the feelings of warmth and wholesomeness. The pink tones come across as soothing and gentle, that of a kinder love, in which people are genuinely happy and comfortable together. Additionally, the distribution of pink color being evenly washed over the entire room adds to the comfort of the moment, rather than an isolated light creating harsh lines.

3) THEME: ROMANCE

4) DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because it displays beautifully the multi-faceted aspects of romance, and almost tells two love stories in one image. The bright, yet solitary moon suspended and glowing amidst the hazy and intimidating clouds displays one aspect of romance: the tunnel vision often experienced when one falls in love. The one and only focus of the sky is the moon; everything else is hazy and unclear. The warm and inviting campfire juxtaposes the spotlight-like moon, displaying the passion of romance. The soft orange glow emitted by the campfire illuminates the surroundings, asking for campfire songs to be sung and spreading its fervor beyond the actual fire. I love the mix of cool and warm tones, as romance never feels one exact way. It’s a mix of emotions, colors, and feelings, just like the image displays.

  1. I found this picture on a website by photographer, David Peterson. I was unable to find if he was the person who took it.

  3. Although the wine and candles imply a romantic date, those items are not what make this picture exude romance. The dark and minimally lit (through blurred and dimmed lights) background give off a close and intimate setting. The sparkles of the wine glass also remind me of the way two people look at each other with stars in their eyes when they’re in love, which implies romance.

Description: I chose this photo because there is only one small dim light illuminating the entire room. The darkness represents the fact that romance and love is not exclusive to anyone. The women in the picture don’t need to be able see each other to feel love. The way the whole room is pictured but the small light draws our eyes is symbolic of how romantic people are distracted from the rest of the world by one light.
