4) DESCRIPTION: This photo reminds me of all the summer days I spent lying on a beach with the sun in my eyes. Even if I closed my eyes, the sun was so bright that it would give my eyelids an orange tint. The sun is also reflecting off of the water, making it even brighter.
1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 5/2 – 11:43 PM – Colonial Square, New York House
2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light was on in the hallway but not the bathroom or the bedroom.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I walked from the bathroom to my bedroom to go to sleep in my first night of quarantine in the new and unfamiliar room, I noticed the light coming from the hallway, and the absence of it in the bathroom and bedroom. Emotionally, it signified my transition from the crazy day I had had where I had no control over what was happening next to the week of venturing into the unknown that I have ahead of me. Covid is still a relatively new disease, especially to me since I have never had it before, and while this week may be scary, I still have to enter the dark room and go on with my life until I can finally go through the door that takes me back into the outside world.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I turned on the big light instead of using my lamp while I was on a Zoom call on my computer
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: After months of suffering from wanting to be seen but not being able to see people on the zoom call, I decided to try turning on the big light in my dorm instead of the nice lamp I normally use. Since the light wasn’t coming from directly behind me, I could finally see the other participants without any glare.

4) DESCRIPTION: I like this photo because the flowers give the picture scale, showing that what looks like such a tiny light to us is a whole world of light for the firefly. The petals of the flower are so thin that the light shines right through them, making them and the rest of the flower glow. I also like how the light bounces off of the other flowers.

3) THEME: Surreal
4) DESCRIPTION: This chandelier is based off of an octopus’s tentacles. Personally, I find it bizarre to asssociate the slimy texture of an octopus and their sticky tentacles to hard and nonmoving lighting. Additionally, seeing a glowing octopus underwater would likely feel surreally magical, especially if there were multiple glowing across a large abyss of dark ocean.
1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 17, 11:30 PM, My dorm
2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I moved my lamp from one side of the room to the other side.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As assignments were piling up and the time I had to complete them was dwindling, I did what any other sane person would do: rearranged my furniture. As part of this stress-relieving physical labor, my warm lamp moved from the west wall to the north wall. I’m not sure why I didn’t think it would happen, but as the source of the light moved, the lighting in the room changed drastically. While the physical placement of the furniture definitely helped, the room as a whole felt much more open, and I was especially satisfied with the fact that I could finally actually see the clothes in my closet, whereas previously the opened doors would block the light trying to shine inside.
1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 12, 2022 – 7:05 AM – Constitution
2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunrise was shining brightly through the top of the closed window shade.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I thought I was dead. I never wake up this early, and I just had a dream that I was being judged by God. All of a sudden, I woke up and felt like my eyes were open but I knew they weren’t. I felt warmth on my face and opened my eyes to see the sun lighting up my entire room, even though the blinds were closed. After I realized I was still alive, I was annoyed because I wouldn’t be able to sleep with that bright light. I changed my angle and even turned over, but the light forced me out of bed that morning.
1) A Fall sunset in Vermont. I used a few lights in the bottom SR hanging position to represent the light that the sun would emit while it is setting. It would be a very wide beam, since the sunrise typically covers all of the horizon. I also added some orange lights in addition to my yellow ones because of the orange leaves on the trees in Vermont that would tint some of the sunlight. On the cyc, I lit the bottom with the same yellow light while lighting the top with a dark blue light to represent the sky. Finally, I added one spotlight with a pale blue to represent the moon. Since the moon is so much smaller, its beam is not as wide, so I only needed one light.
2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral. I used the same colors that i used for my Vermont Sunset, but this time on the bottom cyc lights and center back light. However, instead of the blue lights to represent the night and moon, I used a harsh white that would be shining through the windows of the cathedral. There was not an exact gobo for what I was looking for, so I used a combination of the window gobo and a medium focus to create a sort of arched window shape.
3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean. I started with blue cyc lights to represent the sky and the ocean. Next I added a light in the downstage left hanging position to represent the sun. I originally placed it in the center of the stage to indicate midday, but I adjusted it to increase the amount of life on stage. In my mind, I switched the axis that the sun rotates on, and then I realized that all I did was change the direction. An audience member looking at the back of the stage would be facing northwest instead of north. After that, I added a light on the upstage right floor to act as a reflection of the sunlight on the water.
4) Winter afternoon just before the snow. From my experience, the world feels very dark just before snow comes down. Even though the scene takes place in the mid day, I used a “night blue” gel on the cyc lights to make the sky feel dark. I also only used 75% brightness on the other lights to keep them dark as well. I added in gobos to create the feeling of snow, even though it isn’t snowing yet, just to mimic the feeling of ominous clouds and the realization of what will soon come from them. Since the sky is cloudy, I did not create any sunlight.
DATE – TIME – LOCATION: 3/31/22, 7:00 PM (ish), Brooks Atkinson Theater
OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Spotlights illuminated the actresses.
SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light pierced through the air all the way from the back of the house to the actresses on stage at SIX. The sharp white lines trapped the actresses in a prison of light.
1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/15/22, 10:21 PM, in my dorm
2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I adjusted my desk lamp.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: While I normally have my desk lamp facing away from my work so the light bounces off of the wall, I noticed that the light was too dim and I could not see what I was doing. As soon as I turned the lamp, my peripheral vision was blinded by its light, but my homework was fully illuminated.
