Light Observation 3/8

3/4/24 – 6:45 PM – Calkins 139

Objective Description: The flourescent lights in the studio were very bright in comparison to the dark outside. Even though there was only half of them on, the room was completely lit up, and the white paint on the walls reflected into the room.

Subjective Description: The lights emitted a blinding light that made me have to squint, and my pupils kept dilating and constricting, making the room very white and uncomfortable. It was like a hospital with its unyielding brightness.

Lighting observation 3/4

3/4, 11:47 am, Adams Hall

Objective description: The sun is high in the sky, casting lots of bright light through the windows in my classroom and reflecting off of the computer screens. The glare of the sun coming off of the cars shines onto random points on the wall.

Subjective description: The overwhelming bright light hurts my eyes, considering that this is only my second class, and it makes me aware of how sleep-deprived I am. It is hard to focus on the movie on the screen because of how washed out it is from the sun. I wish we could close the blinds to dim the sunlight.

Lighting Observation – part four

03/1/2024 – 11:48 pm – sidewalk between Bill and Alliance Towers

Objective: The street lights along the path to the Hofstra towers, with the lights in the tower windows.

Subjective: Each street light lamp illuminates the pathway, making the dark night not seem so cold and secluded. The lights in the tall towers are a distant glow, to show city life to viewers down below, so they don’t feel so alone.

Lighting Observation March 1st

My room March 1st 5:35PM

Objective: My lights are off and all that is lighting up my room is the outdoor lighting. It is getting to the point where my room is getting pretty dim, and my eyes are re-adjusting to the darkness. Yet, it is still bright enough to not have to turn my lights on.

Subjective: It is gloomy and a depressing lighting. The dimness of the room make the walls look grey. It almost makes the room seem smaller and it makes everything look washed out. As soon as I turn the lights on, the room will feel totally different and have color again.

Lighting Observation from 2/16

Hofstra Concerts Event in the Pride Den

Objective: Someone is playing the guitar and singing up in front of the room. The usual main bright lights are off, and there are dim blue LED lights surrounding the front of the room with a harsh circular spotlight on the person singing. When people walk by the spotlight, you can see their shadow cover the singer.

Subjective: It is a calm intimate environment because of the dim blue LED lights, however, it is really easy to look at the singer because the spotlight is so bright in comparison. It really draws attention to the singer and the lighting makes it feel like they are the only person in the room.

Lighting Observation 2/29

Objective: Two days ago, it was a beautiful and warm day outside. I enjoy waking up and seeing the dim light shining through the window behind my head. It is a cool white through the curtains, and barely reaches the other side of my bedroom.

Subjective: It’s very peaceful to wake up to such a light in my room, as if someone had gently shifted the lights on for me to awake. This always reminds me of a movie-like scene, where the character wakes up and the light is dim but still bright enough to be daytime. It’s very peaceful and calming.

03/01 Light Observation

Rych standing in the front of the class.

During class on a sunny day the light comes through the window so nicely that the whiteboard reflects the light and Rych almost looks like he is glowing. It’s an interesting contrast to a cloudy day when it’s mostly shadows against the white board.

02/23 Light Observation

The dim lights backstage.

When working backstage the yellow/ white lights are placed perfectly where they are needed in order to be helpful. But they also withhold light just enough that anyone else walking backstage ends up with a silhouette. Watching the actors and run crew walk backstage and seeing the way they move within the confines of the lights and seeing the different shadows cast at different angles is really cool.

02/ 29 Photo Theme- Nightlife

This was taken outside of Kings Theatre just after a concert. I loved the colors of the lights looked reflecting off of the building and the trees around it. The different colors also compliment each other very nicely

Photo Observation 2/29

This photo was taken by me at a club called Somewhere Nowhere. This is my favorite club because you get to see the beautiful skyline, and there is a lot of disco balls and other lighting aspects that create cool lighting concepts around the entirety of the room.
