Lighting Observation #7

Location: LIRR Jamaica Stop at 1:00am

Observation: The tracks weren’t lit because it was so early in the morning so the only light we had was from the platforms we were standing. The were regular light bulbs which illuminated so everything had a slight white light to it. The best part was after a long day youre looking forward to see the train pull in. You look down the track and the first thing that you see is the lights from the train coming at you from afar. It always has a slight yellow to them which makes it easier to see in the dark.

Subjective: The day was very long so seeing this light at the end of the tunnel meant that I was going to reach my destination. It meant an end to my long day. In a way, when I think of train lights I think of a new beginning and a new form of life. It’s pulling in to take you to a place that you’re familiar with or to the unknown. It also what people say ” the light at the end of a tunnel” which means that although their darkness for a moment theirs always a brighter side at the other end. That what I feel when I see a train pull in with its tinted yellow lights that its taking you to the brighter side of life.

Light Observation 7

Date.Time.Location- 3/25/19, 9:00 PM, Basement of my church.

Objective Description- Many of the church trustees, myself included, spent much of the day setting up the downstairs portion of the church for a birthday/going away party for one of our kids. By the time everything was set up and running, there were fluorescent, neon lights illuminating the room at almost every corner.

Subjective Description- Nights such as this never fail to open my eyes to the wide array of possibilities in terms of just how much of a difference lighting choices can make in how one sees a particular space. During much of the day, this room takes advantage of the natural lighting and serves as a simple daytime center for the youth of the church. As darkness fell and the vibrant neon colors filled the room, the space took on a different form. All of the colors, the greens, the blues, the pinks, everyone of them served to create almost a sort of imaginary nighttime world within this single space. In a move almost as simple as flipping a coin, the basement room was no longer a basement room, this space was an escape from the constant grind of the everyday world. The dark blue aura along with the vibrancy of the neon colors brought to mind certain stories of fantasy that I had taken a liking to early on in my childhood. I took a pause to take it all in and asked myself the question “Is this what true bliss feels like?”. The freedom and wonder that these lights created led me to not only believe that this was a replication of pure freedom and bliss, but to also become aware that the power to create these feelings and emotions all rests within our hands. The world is our canvas and we hold the brush!

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Dorm Room- 7:30pm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: light from a sun preparing to set drifts in from an east facing window while I’m laying in bed.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It was a long day, and it felt like the universe was agreeing with me as the sun set over the horizon. There was still more to be done, but it would be okay to take a break for a while with a quick nap.

Lighting Observation 7

My dorm room, 3/15/19, 9:49pm
I had noticed flashing outside, and saw that a thunderstorm was passing in the distance. Every minute or so, you could see the strikes within the clouds.
The lighting flashing on the clouds made them look almost like a pinkish-purple color. The clouds in the foreground helped to create a bit more of a contrast between the pink that would appear. The lightning created these large pink beams that radiated out from the strike point, making the sky look like a concert venue, with the lights flashing upwards to create their separate beams. It gave off this magical and mystic quality to it, which I found to be very enticing.

Lighting Observation #7

Date/Time/Location: 3-27-19, 8:30 pm , my dorm room

Senario: I was coming back from a late night class at around 8, and as I got into my building, the main lights of the first floor were completely dark. All I could see was a little line of light coming from my dorm room, since it was the first room on the right. I was hearing loud music (my roomate DJing), and just different colors of light coming from underneath my dorm. I open the door and there’s no lights except for the disco ball and the lights from his DJ equipment.

I was shocked his lights were so powerful to be able to be seen in such a small area confined to the floor.

Lighting Observation #7

Date, Time, Location: 3/28/19, around 7pm in my dorm room

Objective Description: When I walked into my dorm room, the living room area was dark and the only light in the room was coming from a set of string lights on the wall.

Subjective Description: The lighting created by the string lights created a light brightness to the room. It seemed like it could have been acting similar to sunight coming through the window in the morning.

Lighting Observation

March 28, 2019 / 3:40 pm / Main Level of the library

Objective: Cylindrical lamps scattered throughout the ceiling. Glass walls separate the cafe area and the research desks.

Subjective: The light illuminating from the many cylinders reflected in the glass makes them appear to continue forever like that scene in Disney’s Tangled where lamps fill the sky. This also reminds me of the mirror room art installations of illuminating pumpkins that appear to be a large field but actually a very small room.

Photo Observation

Attribute: google image advertisement search

Theme: This fits with the theme “advertisement” because it is an ad for Heinz ketchup.

The lighting was interesting for this ad because besides of the glare on the smooth tomatoes, it is very monochromatic, making the reflection of the light stand out. This ad is creative because it emphasizes the main ingredient within the shape of the product, with the slices shown by the light. Without the contrast, it would be hard to tell what was going on.

Lighting Observation #6

March 17, 2019 2pm Brockport University

I was watching the Faculty concert where the faculty from various schools perform their own works. There was a dance that was particularly surprising because it was cringy, a quality you don’t expect from a professor. She wore a long red dress as green light covered the stage and the cyc.

The stage filled with ominous green light that complemented the red dress.

Light Observation #6

  1. 3.14.19 12:30pm Brockport University
  2. I was sitting as an audience member watching a dance concert. One piece ended with a single flash of light and then went to a blackout.
  3. As the dancers gathered around in a group a single flash of light resembled a photo being taken. This was a very creative way to end their piece.
