Lighting Moment

  1. February 17th 2023, 7:30 pm
  2. A lamp on a post in the Netherlands courtyard
  3. The white light radiating off of the lamp post made the sky around it glow faintly. It illuminated the small snowflakes raining from the sky, making the moment seem magical. The light itself was so round and bright, I could have mistaken it for the moon. The cool toned lamp made the snow falling on my face feel colder because of the mood the light gave off.

Light Observation

Date/Time/Location: 2/17/23 around 1:45PM at Bernon Hall.

Objective: small amounts of sunlight coming through the above skylight through drops of rain on the glass.

Subjective: Like a fish on a rainy day, looking up towards the top of the ocean, beams of sunlight being distorted by water dimly light up the dark hallway, giving me the perspective of a fish looking up through the water, drifting about the seas with a calm life, a sense of peace after a long and challenging week.

Lighting Moment

Date: 2/14/23

Time: 11:07 P.M.

Location: between Lowe Hall and Memorial Hall

Objective: A light under the covered walkway connecting Lowe and Memorial Halls. The outside of the arch and tunnel is not lit, only the inside walls.

Subjective: I was on my way back to my dorm after spending five hours working on a drafting in 216. There was no one else out around me and seeing just the single light surrounded by black felt lonely.

Lighting Observation 2

Feb. 15th, 2023, 5:09pm, dorm in Vander Poel Hall

Objective: The sunlight is coming through my roommate Maggie’s window on the opposite side of the room. She has some burned-out gels taped to her window that Jim Hart once said I could take. Two are dark blue and five are a more cerulean color; she taped them up in the shape of a smiley face, with the dark blue as the eyes and the cerulean as the smile. The sunlight shines through the window, through the gels, and onto her wall, creating crisp shadows where the mullions of the window block the light and a dual-toned blue smiley face.

Subjective: This is a cheerful scene. The gels create a silly, colorful grin on the beige backdrop of our dorm room walls. I was on a video call with my grandparents, and I had to pause on my end just to take a picture of the sunlight on Maggie’s wall. There’s the barest hint of the beginning of golden hour in the glowy tint of the sunlight coming through, and it feels like a happy and comforting room to be in, at this moment. The light-lined shadow of the stacked blinds at the top of this sunny image make me aware of the fact that her blinds aren’t down, and that she has left them open on purpose, to let the light in and uplift the vibe around here. It isn’t hot, but it’s a warm environment.

Description: The red and blue lighting gives off a feeling of passion and I really enjoy the gobo that is embedded in the lighting.

Romance-Photo Observation

Theme: Romantic

Description:  The warm, subdued lighting in this photo is what pushes me to think romance.  There is warm, yellow color emitting from the candles and fireplace. The light is just bright enough for those who will sit in the table to see each other but not bright enough for them to be distracted by their surroundings. Therefore creating a more intimate setting if a couple were to sit in a place like this.

Dim light was the first thing I think of when I hear romance. The dim lights in this photo accent the reds of the roses and plates. Romance to me at first feels like something you see in movies. The camera focused on just two people, lights all on them. The dim light sets an intimate mood,  so the only person you can see is who you are with. the tree lights in the back reflecting off the mirror complement the yellowness of the light over the table.

Theme: Romance

Romance is what individuals make of it, and for a wedding it takes two people in love to make a marriage work. From lots of movies and shows weddings are fairly commonly shown on the beach at dusk. Coming from someone who hates the beach during the day, one of the most romantic things in my mind is meeting your partner at the beach as the sun is setting, the air is turning cool and the torches are lit, and you can just sit there and watch the sea as it slowly fades away into night, that to me is romance.

I took this photo when I was watching the fireworks show of Independence Day. This is the first time that I watch Independence Day fireworks, it was so huge and astonishing. Despite the reason of this fireworks, I think this photo is very romantic. I like the how pink is so strong and the smoke makes it more vague, which upgrade the pink color. And the little fireworks are just like flowers blooming in the sky. At the same time, the trees covered some parts of fireworks, the silhouette is like a romantic lover, makes this photo much more romantic.

I was struggling with finding an image for this theme, but after scrolling through many images, this one caught my eye. To me, romance is more than just romantic love – it’s a feeling about anything, whether that’s a person or a place or a situation, and the lighting of this image feels very romantic to me, on many levels. The street lamps lining this bridge are the perfect brightness for maintaining a romantic tone without obscuring the people or view present. The rippling reflection of those lamps draw the eye away from the total darkness under the bridge and out into the gorgeous open air. And the sky ties it all together with this soft, delicate lilac color, more periwinkle in some places and more cotton candy in others, but neither too bright nor too dim. There’s a visibility in this image that can get lost in efforts to “set the mood,” as romantics are wont to do. You can see everything happening here, but you see it gentler thanks to the warm glow of the lamps and the lavender haze of the sky. It’s an image that feels nice to look at, and one I could easily romanticize.
