Photo Observation 2/29

Photo taken by me

This is a picture I took this past December when I went to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. This picture is a good representation of what I like to do when I partake in nightlife. Although it is dark out, the bright lights of Radio City and the skyscrapers around it light up the night, and the streets are still bustling with people. NYC is called the city that never sleeps, and the juxtaposition of the dark sky and the bright lights accurately portrays this nickname.

There are multiple lights lit up in the surrounding area, making the energy of the space feel alive. Usually when it is dark out, it is the brain sign to go to bed and recharge, unless you are nocturnal. But with the lights in the water fountain, the street lights, and the pizza joint, this makes the scenic view not closed out.

Lighting Observation 2/23

Location: St. Matthew’s Church, Conneticut (on a film shoot)

Time: 2/25/24 1:00pm

Objective: Sunbeams show through light haze inside of a church, creating overlapping beams with areas of light and shadow.

Subjective: Yellow spears pierce through the air. The whole of the room holds its light like a cool, each moment closeley held with mist. You’d feel compressed if not for the lightness that eminates from your chest. The cool air and the warm light intermix in a symphony and in a church you see god.

Lighting Observation 3/1

2/26/24 – 9:07 PM – Friend’s House

Objective: The string lights hung are the only light in the room, and are set to a light blue/green color. The color drains out some of the other colors in the objects around the room, but bright yellows and oranges are still visible.

Subjective: As the world outside was dark, these lights provided an interesting take on the room before me. I saw colors, yet not so vibrant as they may appear during the day. While one may find this choice eerie, it was strangely calm, as the pops of color still visible reminded me of their normal appearance.

Lighting Observation 2/23

2/22 – 5:17pm – Sitting in my car outside my house

Objective description: The whole sky is clouded over, and it is beginning to rain. The sun is nowhere in sight, and everything is a darker, grey color.

Subjective description: It looks and feels very bleak outside. The darkĀ  grey color of the sky makes everything feel very small and sad. I am in a good mood, but going outside makes me feel sullen and reminds me that it is still winter.

Lighting Observation 2/22

Objective: Walking to class this morning, I noticed the light shined through the trees in a similar way as when it shines through the forest while I am snowmobiling. The faster you go, the beams of light pop out of the branches and openings like little sparkles in the sky. I was reminded of this sight today, just in a much slower fashion.

Subjective: The light shining through the trees today reminded me of the mystical feeling of snowmobiling through the forest back home, in (wayyyy) Upstate New York. When I’m snowmobiling, the snow on the trail and in the trees around me looks very magical. It’s very hard to explain, but cruising through the winds and bends of the trail feels like a beautiful fairytale. The sun is always shining, but not hot enough to melt the snow. The snow is bright and cheery, and it lights up the path and allows for shadows and bumps to be highlighted so the rider can see what’s coming next.

Lighting Observation Feb 22

The back of Starbucks in the Student Center 3:34 PM Thursday

Objective: The student center, in general, is lit up from the huge windows that let the sun in. There are also hanging lights from the ceiling. The whole area is very bright and overall well lit. However, in the back of Starbucks, there is a wall that stops part of the window light from coming in. This wooden wall has holes in it, so it allows for some light to come in and it creates an orange tint. It is much darker compared to the rest of the Student Center and it has streaks of light.

Subjective: The back of Starbucks feels like a dimmer, romantic, and more intimate spot, because there is a contrast of the bright student center. It is like an orange little cave and the lighting makes it feel secluded from the rest of the setting.

Lighting Observation #3

2/18/24 – 5:06 PM – Lowe 108

Objective Description: One of the rolling mirrors was facing toward the windows, and as the sun was setting the mirror reflected the sun’s rays into the room.

Subjective Description: As I sat looking at the mirror away from the sun, I found that I couldn’t escape its brightness yet. The mirror itself became the sun, shining as brightly as if it were, bursting the room into golden light.

Lighting Observation – part three

2/22/2024 – 11:18 am – Lowe 201

Objective: The cold light through the window illuminates the classroom, competing with the light from the projector.

Subjective: The cooler tone of the outside light similarly matches the color of the projector light, illuminating the classroom and making the eyes settle quickly. Since the setting is at a cooler light, there are showings of a whiter light rather than more of a warm yellow tone from the sun.

cold weather post

This photo was taken from my window after the light snowstorm over the break. The gray clouds mixed with the newly white snow make the scene feel cold.
