Lighting Observation 4

  1. 2/19/17, 7:05, Top of the Rock
  2. At the top of Rockefeller Center, you can look out and see all of Manhattan and beyond lit up. You can see everything from Times Square to the Empire State Building to the Chrysler Building. All of the lights are different colors, some are white, some have a yellowish tint, and some are brightly colored.
  3. As I stood at the very top of Rockefeller Center, I looked out and saw everything. I felt like I was standing on the top of the world, watching everything pass by. When you look north, you can see a large dark space with what look like strings of white lights going across it, contrasting the bright, completely lit up places of the rest of the city. It seemed so much more peaceful. As I stared, I realized that the dark space was Central Park, and I was thankful that there was such a large green space where you could go to escape the bright lights and bustle of the city.

Lighting Observation

  1. February 23rd, 2017; 7:54am; Bill of Rights Hall 13th Floor
  2. The sunlit morning fog blanketing the air.
  3. I woke up around 6am and looked outside; I thought it was pouring rain the fog was so heavy.  When I woke up again at 7:30, I then thought it was snowing (I also did not have my glasses on). As I was sitting in front of my window getting ready, I found the way the light was cutting through the fog to be so interesting.  It was completely opaque; I couldn’t see anything through it.  But the light made the density of the fog strikingly clear; if the sterile, white noise “feeling” of a hospital room could be visualized, this is what it would look like.  Fittingly, it felt very mysterious, just like our theme of the week.

Lighting Observation

  1. 2/21/17, 6:54, Times Square
  2. Walking through Times Square, I can see a wide variety of neon signs hanging off of the buildings around me. The light coming from the signs is being reflected onto the glass windows of the surrounding buildings.
  3. As I pass through the bustling crowd of Times Square, I look up and notice the neon signs that decorate almost every building around me. These signs glow red, green, yellow, and a multitude of other colors. As I turn my head to take in all of the architecture around me, I realize that the glowing light coming from the signs is being reflected onto several buildings around them. The array of colored light bouncing off of the buildings brought life to what would have otherwise been a dark and dull cityscape.

Lighting Observation #3

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Feb 16th, 9:55 pm, door window in Lowe 106

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Two lights outside seen through window

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Two lights shining outside the door. Only a shred of light is peaking through the window. It seems to get smaller and smaller the longer I stare. The brilliance of their glow out shines the rest of the lights inside of the room. They have stolen the show.

Lighting Observation #3

  1. Thursday, 5:30 p.m., Unispan
  2. I was walking across the unison and noticed this beautiful sunset peeking through the trees. There was a giant orange ball(the sun) that lit up everything in its path a vibrant orange and and the sky was a gradient of blue, from light to dark as you looked up.
  3. I was walking across the unison after class and looked over at this beautiful sunset that seemed to light up the entire sky. It was very calming, and made me feel warm as i had just walked through the freezing winter air. It was a beautiful ending to a very long day.

Lighting Observation

  1.  2/16/17, 3:47 pm, sitting on the bench outside of Davison Hall
  2. Objective Description: The sun was shining through the trees behind Hofstra Hall. The light squeezed between the branches of the tree and lit up the area where the bench was located.
  3. Subjective Description: The light shining in between the branches casts scattered light on all of the surrounding objects. Warm rays of yellow and orange brightened the entire area. The speckled light combined with the surrounding nature created a peaceful environment.

Party House Repetition with Primary Colors

  1. Location: House on Front Street, February 11, 2017 at 10:45 pm.
  2. Objective: A line of LED lights that illuminate red, then blue, and finally green, over and over. They are the only lights on, cascading the the small interior of the house party in the primary colors.
  3. Subjective: As the music and tight crowd was drowning me out, all I could see was the repeating colors of red, blue, and green. These repeating color changes, hurting my eyes with its repetition, made me think about all the times I had been at a party or one of the bars. I would go, arrive, drink, and then head home. Doing this same thing over and over again to find some connection or fulfillment. Sometimes I would, other times I would not. Yet staring into those primary lighting colors made me realize that I would do similar patterns for partying.

Light Observation 3

  1. Wednesday, February 15th; 5:00 PM; Precision Urgent Care, Mineola
  2. Bright white fluorescent lighting
  3. I was sitting in the doctor’s office at urgent care, waiting for the doctor to come in and examine my jaw. The light made me feel very anxious, like I was somewhere far away from the warmth of home. It was warm in the office, but the light made it feel colder. I was filled with the desire to leave and go home, but the light made me feel like there was no escape. I closed my eyes and took deep breaths to calm down and get away from the harshness of the light for a while.

Lighting Observation

  1. February 14th, 2017 (Valentine’s Day!); 8:42 am; walking past the Rugby fields on North Campus.
  2. The morning sunlight reflecting off of the snow on the fields.
  3. As I was walking back from the gym, the light bouncing off of the snow kept catching my eye in an unusual way.  It was just warm enough that the snow was melting, but still cold enough for it to be frozen; combined with the sunlight gleaming on it, the snow looked like giant globs of glazed, iced frosting.  The smooth, glistening frosting-like snow suddenly made me hungry (or maybe that was the workout talking), and I found myself unable to look away from the tasty morning light.

Light Observation #2

  1. Outside Hague house, Feb 9th
  2. The sun wasn’t out yet, and it was still snowing, but the light that managed to get through the clouds was blinding.
  3. I’d been cooped up in my room all day avoiding going out into the snow as much as possible, until my suitemates decided to get food. As we walked outside, it was still snowing and freezing cold. I was geared up to be miserable until I realized that despite the clouds still being thick, and the snow still falling, the sun was managing to begin to come out just a little bit, and the reflection off the snow was exhilarating. It bounced from snow covered surface to snow covered surface, like it had just been released from a cage. It made me feel hopeful, and a little bit warm.
