  1. Theme: Advertisement / Desire
  2. Objective Description: I chose this McDonalds online advertisement. The chain uses red and yellow colors because it is supposed to make viewers hungry. In the photo, bright white light is coming in from the upper left corner and a blurred out red object is behind the fries on the right of the photo.
  3. Subjective Description: I think the white light was used to highlight the “quality” of the food and make the yellow and red colors very bright. Moreover, the red blurred out object on the right was not placed there by any chance. This was definitely placed to help appeal to the hunger of customers. Overall, I like the choice of white overhead lighting because it creates a clean finish to the photo and makes the cheese look glossy on the hamburger.

  2. Theme: Summer
  3. Description: This photo captures all of my favorite aspects of summer: clear skies, ocean waters, spending time with friends, warm lighting, and relaxation. The vibrant blue sky reflects a large amount of light into the water so that people may see their feet in the sand. Moreover, the brightness of the environment and cleanliness of the water create an almost “drinkable” appearance to the ocean. Over summer, I hope to travel to Sicily and see beaches as beautiful as this one.

Photo Observation

Theme: Wild Card

Attributes: I took this photo at 7:12pm on April 17th at home

Description: I like all of the different soft shadows and geometric shapes. There is a beaded bird hanging on the lamp that is also reflecting the light. I just find all of the different  lines on the wall to be exciting and also a bit confusing because there wasn’t more than one light source in the room- only a window to the right so I wouldn’t have expected the shapes being created.

THEME: Wildcard

DESCRIPTION: With my final dance performance coming up this week, I have started to notice all the interesting choices for lighting made by this season’s choreographers. This photo captures the essence of one of the pieces, choreographed by Yoshito. The lack of color in correspondence to the sharp angular light provides a dramatic intensity to the atmosphere. Moreover, I feel as though the rectangular format is similar to that of focusing a lens or zooming in on a picture. While the small frames of light create interesting shapes on the floor, they also focus the audience’s gaze on the dancers’ movement and fade out all the in-between spaces.

Surreal Photo Observation

  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. Description: This photo exemplifies the theme of surrealism by intertwining everyday images with imagination and a twist on reality. While everything in this picture may exist in real life, you would never see a shark soaring in the air. Moreover, the shadow cast over the shark conveys that he is floating beneath the tunnel and approaching the figure in the yellow jacket. I also like how the sea creature is smiling in the dark, almost giving him an even more sinister appearance. In the background, the mellow greens and bright pavement create a calm atmosphere, which the shark then disturbs by lurking in the shadows.

Photo Observation

Noon on a hot summer day in the Caribbean-

The time in the prompt informed the position of the warmer light because in theory the sun would be directly overhead. The sky, I tried to create a cool but misty blue. The entire scene is meant to appear a little hazy from the heat.

Easter Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral-

I like how the light used to represent the sun rising is illuminating a large circle of light as if the Cathedral is on a hillside or a mountaintop. While teal isn’t a natural color for the sky, I feel like it somehow works well with the vibe of Easter morning in a church because it’s sort of ethereal and bright.

Winter afternoon just before the snow fall-

I sort of imagined this scene taking place in a kitchen with big windows and the circle of light on stage left would be the outside view from the window. I tried to combine cooler colors to show that it’s winter while also deciding the best place to trickle in sunlight in order to show the time of day but not stray from the perceived weather conditions.

Fall sunset in Vermont- I chose to use a sidelight that hangs a little lower to depict a sinking sun. The violet/deep blue is a cooler tone for the sky since the fall has cooler temperatures.

Spring Photo Observation

  2. Theme: Spring
  3. Description: Everything about this photo exemplifies the simple joys of spring. In the background, you can see how the sunlight illuminates the grass, trees, and pastel flowers. Moreover, this lighting is not only beautiful, but encourages people to go outdoors and get some vitamin D in fun ways, such as having a picnic! While the picture clearly embodies a warm temperature, the overcast shadow from the trees provides a nice shade from the heat. All around, I like that there are spots of shade and wide spaces of light that compliment the natural colors of the terrain.

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTES: 1:42 pm Friday, April 1
  2. THEME: Spring
  3. DESCRIPTION: I thought this photo was a good representation of Spring lighting because it captures the transition from cold and gloomy to sunny and warm in the same moment in the sky. The sun is still a little lower because it’s not quite summer. The clouds are still thick and low, masking some of the light that otherwise could be seen. The parts of the sky that are visible are a deep and bright blue near where the sun pierces the thinner clouds above. I think it’s unlikely this type of lighting could be recreated in a different season.

Photo Observation – Spring

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Shannon Torres
  2. THEME: Spring
  3. DESCRIPTION: I like the hazy effect that the sun shining through the clouds and the fog make. It makes me feel the cool morning air of spring, with the promise of a warmer sun in a few hours. I like the placement of the bright sun sitting on the far left side of the skyline and the pop of pink in the clouds on the right side. The angle of the photo makes the field of flowers seem endless, and the white flowers pop against the green field. I also like the pop of bright pink in the bottom right side of the flowers.

Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.discovernepa.com/calendar/scranton-st-patricks-parade/
  2. Theme: St. Patrick’s Day
  3. Description: I chose this photo because it perfectly captures the true spirit of St. Patrick’s day. I love the sense of community presented as The Society of Irish Women walk down the streets of the parade all adorned in a bright green color. While the white light emanating from the sun does not necessarily provide a warm glow, the white color still gives life to the fun day ahead.
