Lighting Observation 2/26

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Hempstead Turnpike, 2/24/2021, around 12 pm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun is brightest this time during the day and the snow makes its glow that much more intense. I was driving and as soon as I turned the corner I was blinded by the reflected sun.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Such a beautiful sight can be dangerous. The sun supports life, illuminating all of the world’s beauties, but it can be as frightening as it is enticing. The fear that comes with blinding light-no matter how long-is enough to take your breath away. The sheer juxtaposition of something so beautiful making you uncomfortable is unfathomable in itself. Light can make your heart flutter before it makes it drop.

Light Observation #2

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 2/14/2021 – 1:00 pm – Rivaaz, Indian restaurant in Pequannock, NJ

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light is leaking through the curtain, providing a slim amount of natural light. It is a huge difference from the bright, cool lighting reflecting off the snow from the outside. The white light from the fixtures in the restaurant is bright for 1 pm on Valentine’s Day, but the warmer than the light outside, highlighting the yellow walls and orange tables.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The crisp winter air pushes you through the door, allowing warmer lighting to warm you. As soon as I walked in, I felt comfortable, despite the entryway being physically almost the same temperature as the outside. There was not a huge gust of heated air, but the warmth of artificial light was enough to warm up to. The light provided a homey feeling after surviving the winter cold and the blinding, reflected light from the outdoors.

Light Observation #7

1) March 29th-5:15pm-Penn Station

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: After getting off an LIRR train at Penn station, I stood to the side while I waited for my friends to meet up. There was a long and large strip of a florescent light that was very bright above me. It hit me on an angle on my right side. There was also a large square shaped post that blocked a certain area of the light which created a sharp line to the shape of the field of light.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light was so bright it distracted me from what I was supposed to be doing. The light created a mesmerizing feeling because of how bright it was. I felt like a moth being attracted to light because of how I couldn’t stop looking at it. The light was leaning on the cool toned side, however not extremely cool toned that it was very noticeable. This lighting moment was distracting and very odd as it made me feel frozen in the busy train station.

3. Summer

4. When I think of summer I think of summer nights. When I think of summer nights, I think of either county fair rides or fireflies. Every summer I spend hours catching these beautiful and curious bug in mason jars and staring at their awesomeness. What’s the secret? I’ve always wondered how they create the light. It amazes me.

Light Observation

  1. 4/11/17, 9:30 pm, outside of CV Star.
  2. I was outside and it was dark but I noticed there was a big bright white light, it was the moon.
  3. I just got out of class and I was walking when I noticed a shinning light reflecting off of my phone screen and when I looked back there was the moon. It may sound simple and cliche but it was beautiful. Usually I think of the sun shinning bright in the sky especially when it’s nice weather. The moon caught my eye mostly because it was a full moon. Sometimes when there is a full moon it’s yellow and has more of a darker tone. It illuminated my surroundings. I love the color white and in my eyes the moon was shinning big, bright, and white.

Lighting Observation

3/16/2017  4 AM Hague House, my room

White light pouring in through the window, light coming from the top half of the computer coming out in slots, bottom half unobstructed light. Covers walls in light.

The darkness of the night is a myth.  When the supposed darkest hours of the day are in full swing, endless light pours forth into my room and shines across each wall.  The glow of the light shifts slowly over time but persists in breaking through no matter what hour it is.  The only wall spared of the chunks of brightness graces my roommate while I face the wrath of the night’s sunny gleam.

Photo Observation

2) This photo was taken by me in the summer hanging out in botanical gardens.

3) Theme: Single subject, Single light source

4) I chose this photo because the sunlight on the middle right side catches the eye. I like how the color is white and it is bright, warm, and inviting. If you look closely you can see the right side of my face slightly brighter than my left side as the sunlight reflects on my face. It is a simple selfie.

Light Observation

  1. 3/7/2017, 12:45 PM Hofstra’s Starbucks
  2. The overhead lights seemed dimmer than usual, the lights in the display case were bright.
  3. I’ve gone to Hofstra’s Starbucks quite often, but I happened to appreciate the lights of the display case a little bit more than usual.  The lights above were dull in comparison to the intense glow in the case highlighting the treats inside.  Each dessert and leftover breakfast snack had its own powerful spotlight to be presented in.  Each item was given importance by the bright overhead light.

Lighting Observation 1

  1. Thursday 7:10am in my dorm room. I had just been woken up by my roommate.
  2. The light was orange in color and it was slipping through the open spaces of the shades on my window. Just a small amount of light was peaking through a few of the spaces in the corner of the shade.
  3. The light was a bright tangerine orange. I couldn’t see its source, but I knew it was the sun leaking in to the cracks of the shades and invading the small piece of the window sill with its faded value. Anger and hatred filled the room. The last thing I wanted to see at that time was sunlight. Sunlight indicated the day had started and it was time to stop sleeping. How dare the sunlight sneak into my room and disturb my sweet slumber.

Photo Observation #11: Surreal Lighting at the Happiest Place on Earth

illuminations-reflections-of-earth-barkley-simpson

I got this photo from a blog about Epcot called Epcot Explorer: https://epcotexplorer.wordpress.com/2015/09/22/illuminations-reflecting-on-15-years/ .

The theme is surreal.

The lighting is unreal in its color, its angle, its vibrancy. The sky is lit up by lasers like the end of the world or like a mystical portal is opening. The colorful lights are reflected in the water making it resemble a magical river that one might dream up as a child. All of the lighting is fantastical even the bright projected white on the Earth. The water shows the hidden mysteries of lights that are far off and also the pink and green of the globe. The various angles are unusual as the light from the water fountains illustrates since it goes straight up with the water. There are neons, bright magentas, oranges, blues, greens, and white in the color palette of the lights. There are hints of red, yellow, and purple as well. It is like a rainbow but brighter; the lights have a similar feeling of joy in their colors as fireworks and glow sticks. They are spectacular and delightful like a magician show. Clearly, the lights are magical not realistic. Even the sky with the green and blue fading into one another repeatedly in a pattern is mostly intense and vibrant in color and brightness. This brightness is like the pages of children’s picture books and children’s toys in general. Consequently, the lighting is surreal and creates an atmosphere that is playful, reflexive, and dream-like.
