Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 5/5/2021 – 8:00 pm – Alumni House

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Fifteen rectangular overhead lights shine down on the eleven plexiglass cubicles and computers in the alumni house.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I sit down in my swivel chair for work, my head darts up as the lights flicker from old electrical wiring. The building itself is already creepy, but as the overheads switch on and off it forces my head up to see the reflections of the light bouncing off the plexiglass, creating multiple orbs of light in each panel– something that I had never noticed before. I could not help but be a little nervous as I am the only one working in the worn down building tonight.

Photo Observation

1)

2) ATTRIBUTION: taken by me in California in 2018

3) THEME: Summer

4) DESCRIPTION: The amber colors beaming out of the sky remind you of iced orange juice on a hot summer afternoon as the sun silhouettes the palm trees, instantly making me think of the dry heat on this family trip to California. The wispy clouds are a sign of beautiful summer weather, even as the sun begins to down.

Light Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/29/2021 – 12:00 pm – Bits n’ Bites

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light from the ceiling fixtures and from the food display case shines off the fresh, glossy fruits on the counter in Bits n’ Bites.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The fresh vegetables and produce sparkle next to the packaged, overeaten meals in the display case. The lighting enables the new addition to the dining area to call my name as I reach for a variety in my constant food habits, ready to make a meal.

Photo Observation (Wild Card/Dealer’s Choice-Irony )

1)

2) ATTRIBUTION: taken by me, 2018 Decatur, Georgia (I think)

3) THEME: Wild Card/Dealer’s Choice (Irony)

4) DESCRIPTION: The light from the streetlamp perfectly illuminates the words “Cool Stuff” on a wall that is covered in bubbly characters. Perhaps the only thing edgy or cool about this painting is the word itself as the characters are undoubtedly designed by a talented artist, but cute and adorable rather than fresh and hip.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/21/2021 – 11:30 am – pathway of Breslin Hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun just came back out after a rain shower and was reflecting off of the puddles and peering through the dewy leaves of the trees outside of Breslin Hall.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The relief felt as I pulled my hoodie down on this chilly, rainy day woke me up as I exited a particularly bland lecture. Excited for a new day as the sunlight reflected off of the puddles on the ground and warmed my skin, I felt refreshed as I walked to my car, saddened that I would have to stay in and work the rest of the day at a desk.

Photo Observation- Surreal

1)

2) Jee Young Lee (Untouched – Unedited Surreal Photography by Jee Young Lee – Pondly)

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The lighting through the window is trapped inside the confines of the glass’ shape, rather than dispersing through the room, representing the dream state and being trapped in your mind, no matter what is going on around you. The top half of the room is impossibly lit diagonally from the window, creating a dream-like effect in which only half of the room may wake the model.

Light Lab

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

Cyc Lights: 8200, R27, 2190, R15

par64mfl: no color

36 degree Source Four: 6600, 6500

The vibrant colors of the sunset in Vermont illuminate the model. The lack of gradient symbolizes the crisp mountains of the landscape, mixing into a pale amber as it lights the ground.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

Cyc Lights: 7900, 8450, 6200, 6800

Gobo: Window Chancery in 36 degree Source Four, no color

par64mfl: 6200, 6800

par64wfl: 7900, 8450

A more gentle spring sunset is represented through a soft gradient of white, to amber to pink, very similar to Easter colors. The light shines through the Gothic Cathedral’s giant window as the light encompasses the building’s guests.
3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

Cyc Lights: No Color, L117

Gobo: Palm in 36 degree Source Four, No Color

par64wfl: 7750, R316

par 64 mfl: L764, 6500

The pure, light blue on the cyc is representative of both the clear skies and water in the Caribbean. The palm leaf gobo adds to the island feel and the warm lighting allows for a more toasty environment.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

Cyc: G870

Gobo: Cloud 8 in 36 degree Source Four, 4720

26 degree Source Fours: R398, no color

Right before it snows, the sky gets grey and the clouds gather overhead, as is shown with the off-white cyc and cloud gobo. Although still, light, it the stage is darker as the weather worsens.

Light Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/14/2021 – 10:00am – the tent in front of Lowe

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight bled through the blue and yellow pattern of the top of the tent, tinging the freshly planted grass and dirt between a sunflower yellow.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sheets of cloud cleared as I was immersed in a strong yellow lighting, immediately lifting my spirits and mood. The heat from the light encompassed me, keeping me warm on a brisk, Spring day, providing me with comfort as I tried my best to get everything that needed to get done for the week, done.

Photo Observation (Inspiration)

1)

2) Tara Niami, self portrait in the sunset light of trouville (normandy,… | Flickr

3) THEME: Inspiration

4) DESCRIPTION: A creative process can sometimes be like staring at wall. Like light, sometimes it appears, silhouetting the deepest part of your brain and bring the answer to you. The creativity surrounds your body and seeps out of your being in the most unexpected ways and moments, with its most intense visions beginning at the top of your head and fizzling as it meets the ground and earth.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/7/2021 – 5:40 – road leading into CV Starr

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight shines from the right of the sky, barely behind the top corner of the building, yet illuminating the entire structure. CV Starr’s windowed side walls glow from the white light that shines upon it, reflecting it around the surrounding areas and lighting the freshly blossomed petals of the University’s trees.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The windows make the structure of the new building turn into rays of light themselves as the sunlight hits them, making for a stunning, sparkling effect. Although the building is not brand, brand new, the way the light the corners of the building makes it look sparkling. This building looks completely different in the Spring.
