Lighting Observation #7

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : March 27, 2022 at 12:24, Elite Sound Stage Studio

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The room is all black, and it is lit with bright pink and purple front lights. There is fog filling the room. There are a lot of moving bodies in the space.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The bright lights shining into the face of the audience creates an energizing atmosphere. The pinks and purples bring a sense of joy and lightheartedness. The fog in correlation with the moving bodies blurs the lights in a way that makes the space seem like it is in constant motion. The entire atmosphere seems energized for a good time. The outside world seems to melt away with the black walls of the space, and all that is left is the flooding brightness from the stage area.

Advertisement/Desire

ATTRIBUTES : This photo is from a Dior Sauvage cologne advertisement.

THEME : Advertisement/Desire

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because when I think of desire, I first think of cologne commercials. They try to sell their product by making customers desire to be like the actor the company pays to be in their advertisement. A large part of this idea of desire is in the lighting. In this picture, Johnny Depp is lit mostly by ambient blue lighting of the sky. He is also highlighted by a fire, first and foremost giving him more sculpted facial features. This fire also creates a romantic atmosphere with its more dim lighting to create a sensation of intimacy and the warm tones. The highlighting of Depp with warm tones against the cool tone background also makes him pull the eye much more.

Light Observation #6

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : March 17, 2022 at 12:24, Bits

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : In the back room of Bits, all the window blinds are shut, so the only light in the room is provided by the yellow artificial light of the overhead lights.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The harsh yellow light creates an uneasy atmosphere in the dining seating as students cram for their midterms. The artificial sense of the lights pulls attention to the forced behavior of the students to deprive themselves of fun in order to work towards good grades. The light is centered in the middle of the room, leaving the corners of the space slightly darker, creating a feeling of seclusion in the heavily busy area.

St Patrick’s Day

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by Josephine McCarthy on March 17, 2021.

THEME : St Patrick’s Day

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo first and foremost for the color. I love how the green is a beacon of focus in an otherwise dark landscape. I also enjoy how the green has an almost electric presence against the dull blue. The angle of the light is also extremely interesting to me. The upward angle creates a foreboding, almost mischievous mood which well reflects the shenanigans that many get into on St Patrick’s Day.

Lighting Observation #5

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : March 11, 2022 at 10:20, Hallway into the Bathroom

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The hallway is all dark, save for the light coming from the bathroom. The door is mostly closed, so the light is condensed to a sliver, highlighting the space around the door.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The limited light creates a frame for the door that enhances the shape and creates an aura of mystery. The sliver of light in contrast to the looming darkness develops a feeling of hope amidst great adversary. The limited light also draws the eye more impactful than an abundance of light because the eye is searching for something to focus on.

Single Artificial Light Source

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by me in my bedroom, March 3, 2022 at 8:10 pm.

THEME : Single Artificial Light Source

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because I like how the single light source seems even brighter as it is reflected off the metal water bottle. It makes the light feel so much more powerful. I also like how the shadows of the water bottle help define its shape in space, giving it dimension and life.

Light Observation #4

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : March 3, 2022 at 3:28 pm, My Kitchen Window

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The sun shines through the window and reflects off a plastic bottle and onto the white countertop.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The light from the window reflects from the plastic bottle onto the white countertop creating a warm feeling. The light fills the room even more effectively through the angling of the bottle. The use of light and white color makes the space seem even larger than it is. There is a sense of loftiness added to the atmosphere. The bottle makes the light feel three dimensional with the way it projects it across the space.

Night Life

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by Aaron Smith.

THEME : Night Life

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because I found the use of shadows extremely intriguing. I feel like in most instances, light is defined by how bright it is, but I love how the light in this photo is defined mostly by the darkness. When I think of the night time, I think of the unknown. This photo has all the clear characteristics of night with the cooler toned colors and isolated light sources. But the existence of shadows adds another dimension of the unknown characteristic that resembles the sensation of night so well.

Light Observation #3

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : February 22, 2022 at 1:24 pm , Axinn Library, Hofstra University Campus, 6th Floor

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : A cloudy sky shines through the windows of the library. There are also dimly lit fluorescent lights set spread out throughout the roof.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The fluorescent lights create an unsettling atmosphere with their slightly yellow hue. If they were the only light source, the space of the library would feel much smaller and more uncomfortable. However, the light streaming in through the windows creates a more uplifting mood. They fuel greater energy for me, as a student, to continue studying.

Cold

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by Roger Ball.

THEME : Cold

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because of the color palette. The majority of cold tones creates a feeling of chill, yet there are still some warm tones present to make the impact of the cool tones even more impactful by the contrast.  However, even with this contrast, I enjoy how the colors are not too vibrant. There is a dullness to them that creates an almost numb feeling that I associate with the cold. Furthermore, the mist in the photo creates the feeling of isolation and expansiveness. When I think of the feeling of cold, I think of being alone. The fog enhances this sensation by tapping into the feeling of the unknown.
