Advertisement / Desire

  1. Theme: Advertisement / Desire
  2. Objective Description: I chose this McDonalds online advertisement. The chain uses red and yellow colors because it is supposed to make viewers hungry. In the photo, bright white light is coming in from the upper left corner and a blurred out red object is behind the fries on the right of the photo.
  3. Subjective Description: I think the white light was used to highlight the “quality” of the food and make the yellow and red colors very bright. Moreover, the red blurred out object on the right was not placed there by any chance. This was definitely placed to help appeal to the hunger of customers. Overall, I like the choice of white overhead lighting because it creates a clean finish to the photo and makes the cheese look glossy on the hamburger.

4 Seasons Lighting

  1. Winter Afternoon Before Snow: I chose to utilize dark and light blues to show the contrast of cold-toned colors during the winter. I also used modestly white light to show the brightness coming in from behind the clouds. Spotted gobos were used to show the haziness / fogginess of the sky before the snowfall.

2. Noon on a Hot Summer Day in the Caribbean: When I think of the Caribbean, I think of sitting with my toes in the sand staring out at the sunset over the ocean. Accordingly, I chose a bright centered yellow light to portray the dimming sunshine. Next, I used blues and reds to show the blending of the sky with the setting sun. On the very outer edges, I also added a faint orange color as though the colors were disappearing at the ocean’s horizon.

3. Easter Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral: Gothic Cathedrals tend to be very large with a multitude of stained glass windows and dark colors. However on Easter, bright colors and pastels very prevalent, so I wanted to mesh these ideas of dark and pastel. As a result, I used purple and yellow to portray light coming in through the painted windows as well as pinks and blues to indicate the sky’s colors pouring in too.

4. Fall Sunset in Vermont: I have never before been to Vermont and am not familiar with its layout in the slightest, so I had to look to Pinterest for some inspiration. However, I did find one breathtaking photo of the Greenback Mountains in Woodstock, which I tried my best to recreate in the photo above. Between the mountains in the midst of the clouds, bright pinks and blues blend with subtle apricot colors. Overhead it is overcast and all the lighting is flooding in from the sides.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: May 4th, 4:35 pm , Emily Lowe
  2. Objective Description: I was in musical theater class in Lowe 108 and we were performing our final projects. As my partner and I taught our short audition piece, I could feel the sunlight coming in from the windows hitting my back. It was not very bright out since the sun was setting.
  3. Subjective Description: While the lighting outside was dimming, the warmth illuminating from the windows indicated the onset of summer. The faint glow excited me for life after college to come soon, but also for the relaxation in the near months before entering “adulthood.”

Photo Observation

  2. Theme: Summer
  3. Description: This photo captures all of my favorite aspects of summer: clear skies, ocean waters, spending time with friends, warm lighting, and relaxation. The vibrant blue sky reflects a large amount of light into the water so that people may see their feet in the sand. Moreover, the brightness of the environment and cleanliness of the water create an almost “drinkable” appearance to the ocean. Over summer, I hope to travel to Sicily and see beaches as beautiful as this one.

Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: https://arts.ufl.edu/academics/theatre-and-dance/

THEME: Wildcard

DESCRIPTION: With my final dance performance coming up this week, I have started to notice all the interesting choices for lighting made by this season’s choreographers. This photo captures the essence of one of the pieces, choreographed by Yoshito. The lack of color in correspondence to the sharp angular light provides a dramatic intensity to the atmosphere. Moreover, I feel as though the rectangular format is similar to that of focusing a lens or zooming in on a picture. While the small frames of light create interesting shapes on the floor, they also focus the audience’s gaze on the dancers’ movement and fade out all the in-between spaces.

Light Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: April 26th / 7:29 pm / John Cranford Adams Playhouse
  2. Objective Description: Currently, I am sitting in one of the downstairs dressing rooms of Hofstra’s large playhouse. There is one singular dim-lit rectangular light illuminating the entire room. In front of me sits a vanity mirror with two parallel sides of light bulbs emanating warm light.
  3. Subjective Description: The cool-tone of the ceiling light provides a nice contrast to the warm lighting from the vanity before me. Although I am usually one who disdains warm lighting indoors, I feel like this low-intensity lighting from the vanity is helping me to relax before traveling to the stage. The closet within the room doesn’t have a light, but again I feel that the low quantity of lights is helping me to focus only on what’s in front of me / what matters.

Light Observation

  1. Date/ Time / Location: April 20th , 3:45 pm , my living room
  2. Objective Description: It was the middle of the day and I had been feeling rather groggy since I woke up. Since I had some essays to write, I decided to go to the living room couch and play some movies as background noise. The lighting in this room is exceptional during midday because there are 4 different windows on opposing sides of the room, allowing sunlight to flow in from nearly every direction. At this point the sun was still shining quite bright in the sky which encouraged a warm glow to pour into the space.
  3. Subjective Description: After feeling sluggish, walking downstairs and seeing visible sunlight in the living room really opened up my eyes and motivated me to grind through some homework. The sunshine was not only awakening, but had a discernible homeliness to it. Even as I sat down and opened up my laptop, the warmth weather seemed to envelop me like a blanket. Now that the cold, gloomy weather is starting to pass, the vivid sunshine allows more energy to flow through the atmosphere of Hempstead.

Surreal Photo Observation

  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. Description: This photo exemplifies the theme of surrealism by intertwining everyday images with imagination and a twist on reality. While everything in this picture may exist in real life, you would never see a shark soaring in the air. Moreover, the shadow cast over the shark conveys that he is floating beneath the tunnel and approaching the figure in the yellow jacket. I also like how the sea creature is smiling in the dark, almost giving him an even more sinister appearance. In the background, the mellow greens and bright pavement create a calm atmosphere, which the shark then disturbs by lurking in the shadows.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: April 6th, 8:45 pm, LH Comm
  2. Objective Description: I was in LH Comm for a dance rehearsal on Wednesday night from 8 – 9:30 pm. Although the room has windows, the darkness from outside crept into the space and gave the room a dim mood. Moreover, the lights inside the room are not a bright white and did not add much of a contrast to the natural lighting from outside. Only half of the lights were turned on as well, so there were several shaded areas within the large studio.
  3. Subjective Description: The past two weeks, I have been on-and-off sick and genuinely did not want to go to that studio for rehearsal. Nonetheless, when I walked into the room, the dim-lit lighting and subtle moonlight emanating from the windows calmed my nerves. I noticed that the moonlight tends to effect me in a way that relaxes my body. At first I thought I associated darkness with sleepiness, but now I realize how I absorb energy from light. When I am in ballet class in the mornings I have much more vigor in my steps and prefer large thrashy movements due to the sunlight. However, in this moment I felt tranquil and ready to move through the dance with ease.

Spring Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.dreamstime.com/picnic-park-green-meadow-flowers-plaid-bottle-wine-romantic-dinner-nature-free-space-text-spring-image118478558
  2. Theme: Spring
  3. Description: Everything about this photo exemplifies the simple joys of spring. In the background, you can see how the sunlight illuminates the grass, trees, and pastel flowers. Moreover, this lighting is not only beautiful, but encourages people to go outdoors and get some vitamin D in fun ways, such as having a picnic! While the picture clearly embodies a warm temperature, the overcast shadow from the trees provides a nice shade from the heat. All around, I like that there are spots of shade and wide spaces of light that compliment the natural colors of the terrain.
