Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: https://arts.ufl.edu/academics/theatre-and-dance/

THEME: Wildcard

DESCRIPTION: With my final dance performance coming up this week, I have started to notice all the interesting choices for lighting made by this season’s choreographers. This photo captures the essence of one of the pieces, choreographed by Yoshito. The lack of color in correspondence to the sharp angular light provides a dramatic intensity to the atmosphere. Moreover, I feel as though the rectangular format is similar to that of focusing a lens or zooming in on a picture. While the small frames of light create interesting shapes on the floor, they also focus the audience’s gaze on the dancers’ movement and fade out all the in-between spaces.

I chose this photo because of the juxtaposition of light on either side of her face. The way the light is hitting her is leaving half very blue and cool, and the other half very orange and warm. This makes one side of her face look more alive and awake and excited, while the other side looks somber and tired. The light reflecting on her glasses is also very eye-catching and makes it hard to see her eyes which makes the picture more interesting to look at.

DESCRIPTION : The first thing that I noticed about this picture was the use of color. I love how the picture has generally muted colors, and then there is the bright strike of green against the muted colors that pulls focus. I love how the limited use of the green makes it that much more impactful. I also enjoy how the water reflects the skyline to create a mirrored effect. The cool tones of the picture give the feeling of cold weather.

Bring the Magic of Fireflies Back Home Again — First Light Wildlife Habitats

2) ATTRIBUTE: First Light Wildlife Habitats, photo by Radim Schreiber

3) THEME: Wildcard

4) DESCRIPTION: I like this photo because the flowers give the picture scale, showing that what looks like such a tiny light to us is a whole world of light for the firefly. The petals of the flower are so thin that the light shines right through them, making them and the rest of the flower glow. I also like how the light bounces off of the other flowers.

Photo Observation (Wild Card/Dealer’s Choice-Irony )

3) THEME: Wild Card/Dealer’s Choice (Irony)

4) DESCRIPTION: The light from the streetlamp perfectly illuminates the words “Cool Stuff” on a wall that is covered in bubbly characters. Perhaps the only thing edgy or cool about this painting is the word itself as the characters are undoubtedly designed by a talented artist, but cute and adorable rather than fresh and hip.
