Photo Observation 10

  1. This picture was taken by me on the Ferris Wheel at the Santa Monica Pier on August 5th.
  2. Theme: Summer
  3. This picture says summer because of the bright sun, bright colors, and the fact that it was taken on a beach. One of my favorite places to go during the summer is the Santa Monica Pier because it isn’t expensive and there is so much to do. The bright colors of Amber’s romper, the Ferris Wheel, and the sky are the epitome of summer and radiate warmth and fun.

  3. When I found out the theme was summer for this week’s photo observation, I immediately thought of the cliche beach view – sublime, serene, and the carrot at the end of the stick of a long semester.  Just looking at this picture I can feel the warmth of the sun on my skin, smell the beautiful Yankee Candle smell of sand and salt, and hear the calming whoosh of the waves.  However, if the sun is not hanging in just the right way in the sky, it could ruin an well-intentioned beach day.  The lighting in this picture encapsulates a truly ideal summer day – the sun highlights and accentuates the bright, pure colors of the water, sand, and umbrella.

3. Theme: Summer

4. When I think of summer I always think of car rides to the beach. I have to admit, the beach is not my favorite location, but the long car ride to the shore with the windows down is something that can’t be beat. The sun peaking through the trees and the salty smell of the ocean coming through the car window is something I find to be so therapeutic. What I like the most about the lighting in this photo is the glare in the bottom left corner. This reminds me of the glare you see on the bottom of your sunglasses.

I included these different colors because when i think of a sunrise i see a picture of darkness that starts at the top and the colors become to change and become brighter as you look down the cyc. I also took some mental pictures that i have when i saw sunsets in Vermont.

A Spring Sunrise in Montauk

This reminds me of the sunrise because right before the sun comes up there are beautiful shades of red and blue that fill up the sky. In this picture the sun is starting to come up that is why she is lit the way she is. She is lit in all white to show the brightness of the sun.

Noon on a Hot Summer Day in Hawaii

When i think of a hot summer day in Hawaii i immediately go to the beach. I lit my actors like they were at the beach with the backdrop being the sky that is right over the water. There are some turquoise colors that are on the cyc that show how tropical the area is.

To me, winter in Maine could be very beautiful. There are still blue skies that have some white in it because of the light reflecting off the snow. This man is walking on a very cold day with snow on the ground

I automatically thought of yellows and pinks when I saw the word sunset so I found a picture of what the actual sunset in Vermont looks like and went off of that. The lighting is bright in the back but softer in the front which I think resembles a sunset quite well.

With this picture I purposefully lit the cyc to show the contrast between sand and sky to get that beach feeling. I also included many shades of yellow to simulate sunshine and placed a lot of the light directly on the model’s face because bright summer days are usually sunny all over.

My version of this picture relfects the photo for two main reasons. One is the direct backlight coming from behind the model to show similarity to the sunlight coming from behind the lighthouse. The second is the fade of blue down to white on the sides of the model showing the cold, dry feeling that is obtained by the picture.

The shadings used in this photo are used to depict what a sunset in Vermont would look like. A red and a yellow light is shone in the direction the sun is facing representing the warm beams that the sun can create. They fit in with the tree just losing it’s leaves in the autumn. The two faintly lit white lights are used to show that the atmosphere around sunsets aren’t completely bereft of light. The colors used in the backdrop gives a warm feeling that a sunset would normally evoke.

The colors and lighting in this photo depicts a spring sunrise in New England. The warm atmosphere of the beach exhibits features of what spring can look like in the New England. The dark clouds above could possibly show an April shower about to occur. The red and yellow lighting comes from the angle the sun is rising from as it hits the subjects with and amber-ish glow. The two uncolored lights on the side represent the lighting around them. Just because there is one light source in the picture doesn’t mean everything around them is shrouded in shadow. The faint light on their feet is to show the very dim and blue glow upon their feet. The red and the deep golden amber in the backdrop give an aura of what a sunrise would give while the blue and red exhibit the light on the floor of the beach.

The shadow angle and sheer brightness in this picture shows what Noon would look like on a hot summer day in Brail. The backdrop exhibits shades of bright pink and pale yellow. These two color combine to create a wonderful shade of white that still exhibits colors of heat. The gold and white colors shine down from the back of the subject casting a bright beam of sunny colors as the sun is at it’s highest peek. The gold represents the sun and the white represents the light the sun emits. This beam of light creates a shadow in front of the subject. The shadow points in the same direction as the lady’s in the picture. The other white lights around the subject exhibit the quality of light that would shine around the subject. They are used to make just there are few shadows around the subject.

The shadows and cool colors here, represent the winter chill of an afternoon in Alaska. The backdrop uses white and blue on the top to simulate the chill of a winter. Yellow is mixed in with these colors to represent the light of the sun. Pale lavender is used to mix in with the white to give a shadow-like feel. There is use of icy blue colors and lavender, not because of the light but because it adds to the shadow effect that a sun would create at his time of day. The white front light represents the light that would still be around him. In this time of day, his entire body wouldn’t be completely surrounded by darkness.

  3. Theme: Nightlife
  4. Most people think of clubs: neon lights and strobe, with alcohol and hip hop,  when they hear the term “nightlife”. I think of summer nights outside, just after the suns gone down. When I was a kid, I would lay outside in the back yard and gaze at the fireflies as they weaved their way in and out of the trees and bushes. They would dance across the night sky, orchestrating a beautiful composition of yellow lights. It was a magical surreal moment I looked forward to every night when the sun began to go down. The fireflies are the epitome of pure life. They do not rely on loud music, alcohol, or extravagant light shows to enjoy the night, they simply shine their own light capturing the same excitement and adrenaline one gets while out on the town, except they, unlike the latter, are genuine. This picture captures their beauty and exuberance, creating my version of what night life is.

3) Theme: Happy

 

4) When I heard the photo theme was happy, I immediately knew that the photo I chose would have something to do with the sun. I have a difficult relationship with the sun- I am extremely affected by the seasons, and just having a sunny day, even in the winter makes things a little better. This is a picture of Foss Hill, on the Wesleyan campus in my town. The sun is still shining, and you can feel the warmth radiating from the left side of the picture. The sky is clear and blue, and the shadows are long and stretched out over the green of the hill. Although the sun directly in the sky is a very happy feeling, the happiest feeling comes after a long day of working at camp, when you’re relaxing outside with friends and the shadows start to get long, but the day just keeps holding on to the sun, because it’s summer and everything is bright and happy. That is what the light in this picture says to me. The day has been long, and filled with life, yet the sun is still there. It is still happy, and it’s summer, so it will stay as long as possible.

THEME: #Allofthefeelings

Prior to leaving for college, I was adamant about getting pictures of my parents and my puppies for my dorm room. This picture happened in between attempts to force my dogs to pose, a concept they didn’t quite understand. Regardless, I snapped this image of my dad and my oldest dog Rajah (a ginormous black labrador who might as well be a shetland pony). Not only does this show to individuals that I love dearly, but it was taken at a time of both joy and wistfulness. I was both excited and apprehensive for my foray into the next chapter of my life, college 3000 miles from home, and in taking such pictures I managed to take a little bit of home with me. My dad is his typical perpetual tan (though not like the Jersey Shore tan – he just likes to sit out in the sun and read) and my puppy looks as sweet as ever. They’re both in between the camera and the brighter light source, casting them in enough shadow to give them a faint glow around the edges. That coupled with the brightness and beauty of a perfect summer’s day gives off a feeling of comfort and nostalgia for me, of the memories I have and the home that I miss. With showcase and finals and so much work getting packed into the next two weeks, it’s a little bit of hope for what I get on the other side.

I have never been to the Caribbean, but I know what a hot summer day feels like, being from Texas. Looking at pictures of what a summer in the Caribbean would be like, I thought to myself that this looked a lot like the South with more blue skies.

Whilst looking through photographs of past student’s Four Seasons projects on Google Images, I found a real picture of a sunrise in a Cathedral. I loved it because the colors were gorgeous and there was a silhouette.

I chose these colors for a sunset because I happen to be drawn immediately to any sunset with a pink hue in it. This particular sunset amazed me greatly and I knew I had to attempt to recreate it.

Recreating a winter setting proved to be difficult for me considering the fact that I have not experienced much of a winter season ever in my lifetime. So I had to search for what I considered to be a seemingly ideal winter afternoon, should I ever have to encounter it in my lifetime.
