Photo Observation

When looking at sunsets/sunrises, the thing that strikes me most is not the light but how it influences the shadows. This piece, with the shadows of the trees through what appears to be a sheer curtain, diffusing the light, creates a wonderful shape with positive and negative space. The brightness fading upwards is also a beautiful moment.

Photo Observation 2/8

Photo taken by me

This photo is taken on a summer night in a harbor in Salem, MA. I like this picture because you can see the contrast between the pinks and oranges of the sun and the blues of the sky and the ocean. There is also a cool circular effect that the sun creates in the middle of the photo, almost like a halo.

Description: To celebrate the long journey of graduating high school, 6 of my close friends and I took a trip to the beach for 3 days at the end of last June. This summer, we want to plan another trip together, not necessarily at the beach but somewhere fun, or to plan to go see a concert or something else over the summer while we all have time together.

Summer Photo Observation

Photo taken by me on June 10,2022 at 8:35pm, Central Park

Description: Summer is where the days last much longer. I tend to spent most of my free time in summer, roaming the city and visiting museums and galleries. This photo was taken while walking by the lake in Central Park around 8pm and the sun was only beginning to set. The colors are warm and bright, specifically an insanely bright yellow at the horizon with oranges and bits of blue littering the sky. The warm colors really push that summer vibe, even the blue has a warmer, lighter hue to it.

Summer Photo Observation

Photo taken by me on June 1st, 2021, 8:30pm, at Tel Yehudah summer camp in Barryville, NY.

Theme: summer

Since 2019, I’ve worked at the same camp every summer. The camp is called Tel Yehudah (TY), and it’s nestled in upstate New York, right on the Delaware River. It’s hard to tell from this photo, but TY is secluded as hell. It lives in what’s essentially a gigantic clearing with trees on all sides and the river as a natural border. There’s no cell service. It’s one of my favorite places on Earth. I’ve spent five of my last seven summers at TY, and the COVID summer working for TY in a virtual way; basically what I’m saying is that to me, summer is synonymous with TY. One of the most beautiful things about the TY landscape is the sunsets we get. The thing about this photo that makes it so summery is the fact that I took it at 8:30pm – the sun had only just set. I love the way the sky becomes a painting full of watercolors in pinks and blues and periwinkles. There’s this vast expanse of sky over TY that provides a perfect blank canvas for sunsets, and I don’t get that anywhere else.

This photo I found online while looking specifically for something that had a nice evening vibe. Summertime is know for the longer days and shorter nights, but I find that summer evenings are some of the best times to exist. In the photo it seems to be early dusk, most of the landscape in the background is in shadow and silhouetting against a dark blue sky. The sunset either just happened, or is across the sky on the other horizon. Under the cover of this porch there are two other sources of illumination that give contrast. The first is an exposed overhead bulb, good old fashion incandescent with a warm splash of amber light. Around the edge of the porch is a bunch of fairy lights that are loosely hung so as to dangle and overlap somewhat — which look to be just a hint warmer than the bulb. These artificial sources provide a warm glow that envelops this quiet and contemplative space. It is separated from the outside world, but only somewhat. A mere few steps away is everything else that life has to offer, but under this little wooden roof is a place to sit and enjoy a bit of peace. It feels calming, the kind of spot you could enjoy in so many different ways with or without anyone else involved.

To me, summer means late nights spent outside next to a fire.

This image is of a beach in my town in which  my friends and I frequent exclusively in the summer time. The bright yellow sun with an orange gradient in to purple tones combined with the white foaming of the ocean reminds me of carefree days when all responsibilities are set aside and one can simply relax at the beach and watch the sun set while listening to the waves crash upon the shore. The purple tones looming over the sky signifying the end of a happy day represents a lullaby type soothing, kindly telling the world to rest for the day.

Description: This is a photo taken from an AgustD concert I went to recently. I really loved the chaotic and vibrant lighting palette that was used throughout the entire set. This moment particularly was one I found really cool. Especially the way they put projections into the red beaming lighting coming from some type of footlights upstage. I believed the projections were supposed to be moving clouds in the lights. Initially, it started off as white lights but then when we reached to the climax of the song, it turned to the red (as seen in the photo) to portray the anger in the lyrics he was rapping. Also I liked the use of the phones and using those as practical lights to surround the artist and bring more focus to him.

Wild card

Photo taken by me in Florida over spring break

I chose this picture because I really love all of the colors you can see so clearly in the sky. The colors were so vibrant in real life and they translated beautifully on camera. We all watched the sky get more and more bright as the sun set and it is a really nice memory.
