Photo Observation

ATTRIBUTES: Photo is of a Banksy art installment posted to Banksy’s Instagram.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The word “surreal” creates a feeling of dream-like unreality. To me, surreal means extremely bizarre and not logical. I chose this Banksy art piece because of the absurdity going on and the odd, dream-like lighting. The lighting reminds me of the weird, slightly uncomfortable lighting you run into when you are having a strange dream. It reminds me a lot of the mythical “back rooms” that many people have dreams about. The rats represent a surreal fear that many have that is then reflected into their dreams.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/21/2021 – 11:30 am – pathway of Breslin Hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun just came back out after a rain shower and was reflecting off of the puddles and peering through the dewy leaves of the trees outside of Breslin Hall.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The relief felt as I pulled my hoodie down on this chilly, rainy day woke me up as I exited a particularly bland lecture. Excited for a new day as the sunlight reflected off of the puddles on the ground and warmed my skin, I felt refreshed as I walked to my car, saddened that I would have to stay in and work the rest of the day at a desk.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: The lighting through the window is trapped inside the confines of the glass’ shape, rather than dispersing through the room, representing the dream state and being trapped in your mind, no matter what is going on around you. The top half of the room is impossibly lit diagonally from the window, creating a dream-like effect in which only half of the room may wake the model.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: Dark and gloomy clouds overhead with a slight hint of sun beckon the urban explorer. The green shades compliment all of the hues on the pavement.

Lighting Observation

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday April 21st at 11:36 am

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My housemate eating breakfast across from me at the table

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The living room was dark, only the window illuminated the table. Her breakfast burrito was surrounded by the soft white emitted from the cloudy day. I should have made one for myself, the light was calling me.

  2. THEME: Surreal
  3. DESCRIPTION: I wake up to find myself surrounded by darkness, as if it is the middle of the night or too early to be awake. The harsh white light from my phone shows that it is actually 8 in the morning. I get up and look outside my dining room window to see the apocalypse. A blanket of smoke covers the city, blocking the sun’s rainbow of light. The world is made up of flames and yet there is only black.

Fall Sunset in Vermont

Lighting Instruments:

SL boom 36 degree four/ ETC 436 coral amber

SR boom 36 degree four/ ETC 436 coral amber

Cyc/  R15 yellow

Cyc/ R27 Red

6” fresnel

Gobo Leaves full/ R94 kelly green/ 36 degree source four ETC 436

I created a sunset color with a mixture of burnt orange and red while adding an amber tone to the sides to resemble the finally setting. I added dark green leaves at the gobo to add the Vermont texture of nature.

Easter sunrise in a gothic cathedral

Lighting Instruments:

Cycs: R15, R27, R80

FOH 2/ 26 degree source four/ ETC 426/ Color R47

Side: SL 36 degree source four/ ETC 436/ Gobo Budding Branches

For this picture, purple and yellow are the two main colors that pop in my head as easter. I wanted a pastel yellow to show the innocence of the morning with the juxtaposition of the medium light purple that fits with the gothic cathedral texture gobo.

Noon on a hot summer day at the Caribbean

Lighting Instruments:

Cyc: R126,R27,R80,R15

6” Fresnel/ color R14- medium straw

36 degree source four ETC 436/ SL/ gobo  Wild palms

SR par 64mfl/ GE FFR

36 degree source four ETC 436/ SL/ gobo  foliage jungle

I used tints of green for the yellow base of lights. I kept thinking of the jungle or green leaves for the Caribbean with a light summer flow from the yellow sun. The model is leaping, because they are happy with leaping around in the sand. I also added a straw like color for the floor to give off the impression of a sand color.

Winter afternoon just before the snow

Lighting Instruments:

cyc R80

FOH 1 and 2 SR and SL 26 degree source four/ ETC 426 /Zephyr blue R84

6” Fresnel/ color G845 Cobalt

SR side light 36 degree source four / ETC 436/ Gobo snowflake six

I wanted to keep this simple with a blue monochrome idea. I imagine before a snowstorm or just for the snow falling, the atmosphere to be a dark blue. There are different angles of blue and values of blue in this lab, and it is supposed to arise the idea of a cold front.

Light Lab Project 4/18

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

  • Cyc Altman- R21
  • Two 36 degree source 4s with gobo- Foliage Breakup Close-Up
    • SR on 2nd pipe in L106
    • SL on 2nd pipe in R2004
  • Two 26 degree source 4s
    • FOH SR in R313
    • FOH SL in R22

A fall sunset in Vermont in my mind means lots of warm tones due to the leaves and the bright sun as it sets. I chose a gobo and used green and red for the foliage. The cyc lights are meant to look like the sun, and the subject is covered in hues of orange and yellow.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

  • Two Cyc Altmans- L798 and R15
  • 26 degree source 4
    • CS of 2nd pipe with gobo- Church Window and in R55
  • 50 degree source 4
    • SL Boom in L179
  • 8” Fresnel
    • CS of 2nd pipe in L164

Gothic cathedrals are infamous for their stained glass windows that seem to glow during sunrise and sunset. I wanted to capture that energy as much as possible in my use of the window gobo. Additionally, sunrises typically have elements of soft yellows and oranges, but they also have the remaining cool tones left from the night disappearing, hence my use of purple on the cyc.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

  • Two Cyc Altmans- G835 and G840
  • Two 36 degree source 4s
    • SR on 2nd pipe with gobo- Pool of Water and in L141
    • SL on 2nd pipe with gobo- Wild Palms and in R4460
  • 26 degree source 4
    • SR of FOH in L104
  • 6” Fresnel CS on 1st pipe in R3442

The Caribbean has lots of vibrant blues and greens between the sky, water, and foliage. I chose to use the cyc to represent the sky, and the gobos to show the plants and water. Additionally, noon is one of the hottest times of the day and especially in tropical areas it shines quite brightly, which is why I used the direct yellow light to shine straight down on the subject.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

  • Two Cyc Altmans- L209 and 2020
  • 36 degree source 4
    • SL Boom with gobo- Overcast and in 2090
  • 8” Fresnel CS on 2nd pipe in G880
  • 6” Fresnel CS on 1st pipe in G870

Right before a snow storm, it is usually bleak and full of gray. I used different shades of gray, white, and blue in order to create the feeling of the coolness before snow. Additionally, I used a cloud gobo in order to further the effect of an overcast sky during winter.

Light Lab

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

Cyc Lights: 8200, R27, 2190, R15

par64mfl: no color

36 degree Source Four: 6600, 6500

The vibrant colors of the sunset in Vermont illuminate the model. The lack of gradient symbolizes the crisp mountains of the landscape, mixing into a pale amber as it lights the ground.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

Cyc Lights: 7900, 8450, 6200, 6800

Gobo: Window Chancery in 36 degree Source Four, no color

par64mfl: 6200, 6800

par64wfl: 7900, 8450

A more gentle spring sunset is represented through a soft gradient of white, to amber to pink, very similar to Easter colors. The light shines through the Gothic Cathedral’s giant window as the light encompasses the building’s guests.
3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

Cyc Lights: No Color, L117

Gobo: Palm in 36 degree Source Four, No Color

par64wfl: 7750, R316

par 64 mfl: L764, 6500

The pure, light blue on the cyc is representative of both the clear skies and water in the Caribbean. The palm leaf gobo adds to the island feel and the warm lighting allows for a more toasty environment.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

Cyc: G870

Gobo: Cloud 8 in 36 degree Source Four, 4720

26 degree Source Fours: R398, no color

Right before it snows, the sky gets grey and the clouds gather overhead, as is shown with the off-white cyc and cloud gobo. Although still, light, it the stage is darker as the weather worsens.

Light Lab Project

Fall sunset in Vermont

3 Altman cyc lights: R27-Medium Red, R80-Primary Blue, R15-Deep Straw

Front light: One 26 degree Source 4: R20-Medium Amber

Sidelight: Two 36 degree source 4s: R27-Medium Red, R22-Deep Amber; Leaves Realistic

When I think of Fall I think of very warm colors with red and orange leaves everywhere, hence the choice of gobos. I wanted it to look like the Sun was shining right on the person. I chose to make the background pink to contrast with the orange and yellow tones but still maintain the warmth.

Easter Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

2 Altman cyc lights: R80-Primary Blue, R15-Deep Straw

Sidelight: Four 36 degree Source 4s: R80-Primary Blue, R336-Billington Pink, R58-Deep Lavender, R92-Turquoise; Gobo: Church Window

Backlight: 1 PAR can (64mfl): L102-Light Amber

Churches tend to have a lot of stained glass, and considering the gobo is called “Church Window” I think it’s quite fitting. I chose colors that are in the typical Easter color scheme. Since this person is standing in the cathedral, I wanted the “sunlight” to be less harsh.

Noon on a hot summer day in the Caribbean

2 Altman cyc lights: R80-Primary Blue, R126-Green Cyc Silk

Front light: One 26 degree Source 4: L102-Light Amber

Sidelight: Two 36 degree Source 4s: R130-Medium Blue Green Silk, Gobo-Foliage Jungle; R72-Azure Blue, Gobo-Water Shimmering

Top light: One 6” Fresnel: L102-Light Amber

Back light: One 8” Fresnel: 8450-Spanked Pink

The bright yellow light shows how intense the sun is. Cyan is a rather tropical color, and the pink is as well (it also adds some warmth to contrast from the cool blues and greens.)

Winter afternoon just before the snow

2 Altman Cyc Lights: R80-Primary Blue, R15-Deep Straw

Front light: One 26 degree Source 4: R55-Lilac

Side light: Two 36 degree Source 4s: R57-Lavender, R78-Trudy Blue

Top light: One 6” Fresnel: L102-Light Amber

I wanted there to be a lot of cool tones to represent the cold weather and winter, but I didn’t make the color too white since it is not snowing yet. There is just the tiniest bit of sunlight left.
