3/14/24 – 5:17 PM – Hofstra Quad outside Emily Lowe Hall

Objective Description: The sun shone through the leaves on one of the trees, making the leaves sparkle in the light.

Subjective Description: The green leaves sparkled in the light of the low-hanging sun as if water droplets rested upon them. Only the golden beams of the sun’s rays could create the glow the tree reflected.

3/14, 3:45pm, Bits and Bytes

Objective description: The sun is still high in the sky, and the shadows of the trees in the Bits quad are cast upon the grass. The glare of the sun reflects off of people’s jewelry and sunglasses, and the vibrance of the green grass is very apparent. The sky is light blue and free from clouds, allowing for the sun to shine down unobstructed.

Subjective description: The warm sun and bright colors fill me with a sense of ease and calm. Feeling the sunlight on my face reminds me of how close we are to spring break and warmer weather, and it makes me want to lay outside and soak up the nice weather.

I like how the light from the sun is a warmer tone but the scenery surrounding still shows a cooler tone, that spring is about to come. You can tell by looking where the sun rays hit along the field and the book that the temperature is about to drop since it is later in the afternoon.

This photo is from Google and it reminds me the most of spring not just because of the flowers, but because of the bright blue sky behind it. The colors together just make a nice warm environment, and it is just a beautiful day in that picture.

I chose this photo taken by Molly S, because it captured a stunning moment of sunlight reflection in the city. This was from an NYU choreography seminar trip with MOVOM.

I like the lighting in this photo because it captures a look a that I attribute to Spring with the way the light shines through the trees. It’s enough sunlight to be pleasant without seeming too blindingly bright. I love all of the green and the light from the sun adds layers of yellow that are quite nice and I’m also a fan of the long shadows from the trees.

I like the dreamy tone set by the light glares in the image. It gives the whimsical feeling of spring from soft colors complimented by the brightness and warmth of the light in the image

Setting: Equipment Room Loading Hall, LHSC, 5pm Mar 13th

Objective: A Fluorescent Light Reflects off of a semi-glossy black-painted door. The reflection is semi-specular and results in a rounded and diffused shape.

Subjective: An echo of the light above, almost remembered. A Hazy memory in a jet black void, marred with scratches and imperfections. Almost there, almost not.

For me, the most beautiful parts of spring are not those which border on summer, but those that break the crust of winter. The first few days, such as those that we aren currently experiencing, in which the air is warm and the sun shines brightly. I wanted to capture that feeling of life and warm sunshine by observing light casting through tree branches. This particular image was captivating as you can see the light diffuse through the branches, altering their colour, and the remaining beams caught in the morning haze.

To replicate this photo with lighting instruments would be difficult, as all of the light is motivated by the sun. That said, I would likely select a large, open face light with a wide beamspread for the primary lighting source. I would consider fresnels for their parallel rays but worry that their spread would be too narrow. I would also gel the light with CTS. The remaining light would be overhead softlights with a light ctb and maybe some additional diffusion.

One of the best parts of spring is when it is nice out, and our modern professors let us take class outside. In the background, you can also see that there are a lot of other classes outside because it is warm out, and there is an overall happiness and warmth to the picture. Aside from the picture being taken literally in the spring, the bright sun and vibrant green grass give the picture a feeling of rebirth and renewing, which is what spring is all about.
