Light Observation

  1. Tuesday, March 28th; 8:06pm; Dorm room on 13th floor, window facing Hempstead Turnpike
  2. The infamous Hofstra birds circling in the low-hanging fog with the streetlamps creating an orange haze within.
  3. Every night without fail on the North side of campus, a flock of at least 30 birds circle, swoop, and dive within the sky, making my bedroom feel like part of a Hitchcock movie.  Tuesday night was especially Hitchcock-esque though with the fog; the gray fog was so thick it was opaque, and it made it even creepier when the birds would seem to appear out of thin air and then dive back into the fog.  The only thing able to break through the fog were the streetlights dotting Hempstead Turnpike and the side streets within Hempstead.  It lit up the city in a way unique to anything I had seen any other night.  Despite their spread being out of focus, the orange light coming from the lamps was the clearest thing in the night, like a beacon.  I don’t think Hitchcock could have created a better picture himself.

Light Observation

  1. 3/16/17, 10:30, behind Enterprise Hall
  2. A Hummer had a string of LED lights on the roof of the car, shining light on all surrounding objects.
  3. I walk past a long line of cars, but one stands out in particular. I see a large car to my left illuminating the night sky. This hummer had a string of LED lights completely covering the roof of the car. The bright blues and reds lit up the surrounding area, reflecting off of the snow and other cars. This created an odd colorful glow to the usual mundane light of the moon.

Lighting Observation

  1. Soccer Field, 11:00 p.m., March 15, 2017
  2. There is no one out on campus. I am driving back from dropping my friend off when i notice the giant soccer lamp casting a cool, long shadow over the soccer net. It is the only light in sight, aside from a few dorm rooms. It bounces off the snow and reflects the light in every direction lighting up the whole field.
  3. I was driving back to my room when i noticed the soccer lights lighting up the whole field and parts of the parking lot. It was the only light in sight. The blue-white lights reflected off the snow and bounced every direction.

Light Observation

  1. Tuesday, March 14th, 7:45 pm; Bill of Rights Hall 12th Floor Kitchen
  2. The stadium lights reflecting off of the field hockey field’s snow.
  3. While enjoying a much wanted snow day with friends, I saw out the large wall-length window in the kitchen what I thought to be a freshly laid ice rink.  Excited, I asked my friend about Hofstra’s new winter wonderland addition, only to notice upon closer look through the window it was actually just the stadium lights reflecting off of the snow to give it a sheer, glossy appearance.  I found it very cool (no pun intended) that the light was able to take one texture and make it appear to be something different, and it made me wonder how often lighting designers do that onstage with different materials and fabrics.

Lighting Observation 7

  1. America’s Center Convention Complex, St. Louis, MO; 3/8/17; 8:15 PM
  2. At the USITT Conference last week, the floor show had tons of lights, mostly red and blue, shining on the ceiling with many different gobos in them, most notably one that looked like scribbles.
  3. As I was looking around the thousands of people in the crowd, I looked up and saw a blue light in a squiggly line. It was by far the most interesting and unique gobo I had ever seen and It made me feel really excited for the conference as I was sure I was about to learn about tons of brand new theatrical technology. I managed to remember to take out my phone and write down what I was seeing so I could make it a lighting observation later.

Lighting Observation

  1. March 10, 2017, My dorm
  2. I woke up early on Friday to the bright white light of snow invading my room. The light reflecting off the snow was so bright and woke me up out of a dead sleep. It almost seemed a little magical as the snow was flurrying outside and created small shadows in the room.
  3. I woke up to an almost mystical white light bouncing off the walls of my room. Confused, i looked out the window to see a small snow storm invading the outside world. The smallsnow

Light observation

  1. In front of Hofstra Hall pre dusk, Thursday
  2. It was a clear warm day, in all honesty the light didn’t change that much but my perception did.
  3. I walked towards Hofstra hall thinking how nice it was out side. It was unseasonably warm and the day was clear. The sunlight came down gently, then I saw out of the corner of my eye my friend. She Immediately run up to my and started crying. The light and weather seemed all together inappropriate, their should have been gloom and rain. Who gave the world permission to keep spinning in spite of human pain?

Light Observation

  1. 3/8/17, 11:45 pm, behind Hofstra Hall
  2. In front of Calkins, the footlight coming from below the flagpole was creating a shadow against the flags. This illumination also created a shadow on the grass from the nearby statue.
  3. I was walking behind Hofstra Hall late at night. I turned to check if the Calkins cat was sitting in her normal spot, but the flagpoles in front of Calkins quickly caught my attention. Aside from the consistent light the moon provided, I had realized the area was particularly well lit. The light flooded around the nearby objects, creating various shadows in many forms. These shadows wrapped the surrounding ground and buildings, giving a very eerie feeling to the scene. The footlight below the flag poles pointed up towards the flags themselves. As the wind moved the flags, the shadows they had casted moved as well. The statue that stood in front of Calkins was lit as well, casting a tall shadow which loomed over the entire quad.

Living Lights in Content

  1. Location: Sensor Garden, February 9, 2017 at 12:50 p.m.
  2. Objective: At the fountain, the light reflects off of the pool of water. Underneath, shimmering orange-gold and black and white spotted light form koi fishes. Making up the floor of the koi fishes’ home are dark leaves spread across the floor.
  3. Subjective: The light shining onto the water and koi fish represents the happiness and content of life. Despite living in a fountain with a floor of leaves, the fish continue to swim and shimmer the light above. This fulfillment makes me happy for the fish and the simplicity of animals.

Lighting Observation 6

  1. Wednesday, 3/8, 6:28 PM; Marriot Hotel in St. Louis
  2. Green lighting on a building across the street.
  3. I was sitting in the hotel room, waiting to head over for the opening of the USITT Conference, when I looked out the window to see a bright green light. It was pointed from the ground up the face of the building, making the Romanesque architecture stand out even more. It gave the columns long shadows that stretched up the front of the building making them appear larger and more ominous. The color of the light was very striking, as bright green is not a light color that is normally found in nature. I watched the light up until we had to leave and head over to the expo hall and it made me feel excited for all of the incredible theatrical technology I was about to discover.
