Lighting Observation #5

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Midnight, Dorm Room in VanderPoel

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The Lights where off in the dorm but the lights from the parking lot still provide plenty of light, even with the blinds closed it streams through the cracks and into the room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It would never be like this at home, the only light past 11pm would be the moon reflecting off the creek behind the house, here there is always light, always something sneaking in through the blind or shining into the room, I know the city never sleeps but couldn’t it at least rest?

Lighting observation

Where: At a friends house on Ruxton Street

  1. By there house they have a single light that stays all Night. What people don’t notice is that when you really look at it you can see that it brings light to a nest. Now we were unsure of what was in the nest but the light made you focus on the nest and see the web that it was encased in. This image is something I think about everytime I’m there.
  2. The light source came at a diagonal so it only lit about half of the nest. You don’t really notice it unless you were looking for it. It created a shadow which would then bring focus to what was really entangled in a web.

Single Light Source

When: October 26th in Far Rockaway Queens

Description: I really loved this photos because even though you can see that there is multiple lights within the pumpkin, you can help but notice that it is the only source of light. The source of light is actually coming out of the inside of the pumpkin and coming outward. Then, because the pumpkin was carved in such a way you’re focused on the image that it provides. Also, my nine year old sister made this pumpkin and I was very proud of her. I love the emotion that this photo brings causing us to know what the season was and why it called for carving a pumpkin.

Photo Observation 5

A friend took this photo of me on June 15th 2018 in Secret Caverns located in Howes Cave, New York.

Theme: Single light source

Description: To say that I’ve never quite experienced anything like what I experienced that day in Secret Caverns would be quite the understatement. While there were certain opportunities to experience moments of natural lighting within the caves, as we delved deeper, light bulbs were utilized so we would not lose our way. The way in which the light would reflect on the rock formations was quite a beauty to behold, from the vibrant colors that were emitted to the pure sense of awe and wonder that would be evoked as one continued down the winding passageways. The area depicted in this photo was the first one encountered after walking through a long passage without any light. The source of light present emanated from directly behind me, which is evident from the shadows cast down on the ground in front of me as well as my face (and much of my body for that matter) being kept in shadow as well. The most pleasing sight in this photo for me is the slight around of red coloration that is emitted as the light reflected off the rocks behind me (above my head) and the way in which it shined on the rocks immediately surrounding me only added to my child-like wonder and amazement. This moment reminded me of just how many of the earth’s natural wonders we take for granted every day. This planet we live on is host to a vast multitude of natural wonders and beauties and to be able to bear witness to one of them that day proved to be quite the thought provoking experience.

Light Observation 5

Date.Time.Location: 2/25/19 9:05 PM Somer Center Chapel at Concordia College

Objective Description: I sat within this massive church for a service on Monday night. The chapel has no windows and all of the lights were switched off. There was no light emanating from the room except for the ten small candle lights that surrounded the altar.

Subjective Description:It was quite the unusual experience to see a chapel without any windows except for the ones in the hallway directly outside of it. The doors leading to these windows were shut before service effectively draining out all of the natural light from the room. Soon after this, the ten candles surrounding the altar were lit and an unusual phenomenon managed to capture my attention. What started off as pitch black was soon illuminated as the ten small orange lights from these candles managed to gradually breathe life back into the room and seemed to envelop everybody and everything in their warm embrace. These small lights filled me with quite a jovial sense of hopefulness not only for the rest of the night that remained but for the day that was to come in a matter of hours. These tiny lights at first appeared small and soon grew to overtake the entire room, the cold of the night looked to dissipate and the hopeful and happy warmth from the candles ushered in a great sense of optimism in everyone around me for the events that were to come.

Light Observation #5

  1. 2/28/19 11:00pm My living room
  2. The door to the backyard was open while I waited for my dog to come back inside. All of a sudden the motion light from the shed went off and shined into the house.
  3. The light from the shed was so bright it light up the yard as if it were a bright sunny day.

Photo Observation #5

Photo taken by me at Madame Tussauds in New York

2. Single light source coming from the upper right of Charlie Chaplin.
3. I found this wax figure of Charlie Chaplin particularly interesting because of the lighting. Chaplins’ posture and half shadowed face makes him look deep in though or conflicted.

Light Observation #5

  1. Date: 2/27/2019, 2 AM in my house.
  2. Objective Observation: I woke up from sleep cause I felt so hungry at that point. So I walked to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator looking for something to eat. The yellow light in the fridge suddenly felt so bright compared to how it feels during the day.
  3. Subjective Observation: Since the light in my house was all out, it was completely dark when I walked into the kitchen. Therefore the light lightbulb in the refrigerator was the only light source at that time. The surrounding made the little yellow light feel much warmer than during the daytime. The food in the fridge also looked more delicious to me because of the warm yellow light on it. (Or I was just too hungry)

Photo Observation #5

  1. A shot from the film The Third Man
  2. With the tunnel drawing to a vanishing point, the light source in this shot can be considered as one single point, which applies to the theme very well. From the viewer’s perspective, the man almost blocks the whole vision to the end of the tunnel because he is very close to us. So that we don’t know what is out there at the end where the light is from, which creates a sense of being trapped and blocked. That’s because in a dark environment, we tend to look for some light, as if the light is the hope.
