Light Observation

  1.  Tuesday 6:30pm, in my dorm room.
  2. I went to my mailbox to get my latest amazon purchase, a laptop sticker that makes the Apple logo look like Ron Swanson. When I placed the sticker on my laptop, I opened it up to see how it looked and saw the light form around the black hair and mustache to form my beloved TV character Ron Swanson.
  3. As the apple lit up and the light surrounded the black sticker, it formed a happy memory for me. the light took a shape that filled me with countless moments of laughter and pure joy. It represents something that I cherish and admire: a great show.

Neon Sign

  1. March 1st, 2017, 11:54 AM, Logan Airport, Boston MA, Gate B34
  2. There is a large neon sign hanging on the wall, with two capital A’s in dark red and a bright blue eagle in between them. The very tip of the eagle wing is almost flashing. It’s not turning completely off but sort of pulsing.
  3. I find neon signs very abrasive and blinding, but I’ve always been interested in the chemistry behind them. These bright, annoying fixtures are produced using hydrogen, mercury, helium, carbon dioxide, or rarefied neon. I can imagine exiting a plane and walking into the gate to see this monstrosity. It was probably 10 feet tall and 8 across. American Airlines is a little over the top. Neon signs are made to capture attention, and I glanced up at it for the better part of an hour. The little twitching part of the wing made me feel on edge, as flickering lights tend to do.

Shadow

  1. I took this while waiting for the shuttle
  2. Shadow
  3. I have always felt at home in the forest on a sunny day, when the light passes through the leaves and branches casting shadows on the ground. It looks as though my shadow is tangled in the arms of this bare tree. I can imagine that the sunlight on the concrete is the sky that the branches reach towards.

Photo Observation 5

  1. I found this on my friends Pinterest page
  2. Theme: Shadow
  3. I feel like this photo is showing us another dimension. I love how the light is gray and is hitting the shoes as if there was someone in them, but there isn’t. Thats whats giving me an eerie feeling when I look at this.

Lighting observation 5

  1. March 2nd at Banana Republic at 5:00pm
  2. The rays from the sunset were so strong that they were reflecting off the windows of the other stores and into ours.
  3. Sometimes it is easy to forget how powerful the suns rays can be. I had this moment when I had just finished my shift at work and was walking out of the store. Until this point, I had only been under florescent light and walking into the natural light was a wake-up call. It warmed my body and stunned me because it was so bright. It was an overwhelming experience.

Seeing Projects From the Shadow

  1. Location: Lawrence T. Hubert School of Comm 2nd floor slide theater room during Senior Film Class, February 28, 2017 at 3-6:30 pm.
  2. Objective: The lights are all turned out in the showcase room. Only the glow from the projector and the two computer screens illuminate the audience from the front.
  3. Subjective: When other students are showing of their projects, all I want to do is hide away. Since I am shooting my senior film on March 23-26 and still do not have everything set, there is a constant fear of failure. This showing is a reminder that I have not done any shooting yet. So, I wait in the shadows, wondering if I will be able to sit up front and be shown through the light.

Lighting Observation 5

  1. Thursday, March 2, 6:08 am, My bed
  2. Bright light coming from the window.
  3. I was lying in bed, still asleep as I had about two hours before I had to get up, when all of the sudden the heavy wind outside blew the cloud away that was blocking the sun from my window. It felt like the light of a thousand suns burning past my eyelids and into my eyes, waking me up despite the blinds being closed. I didn’t know what was happening at first, I was being forced awake far earlier than my brain could comprehend. I felt disoriented, but as my brain began to catch up with my eyes, I felt angry. I was angry at the wind that was now loud enough to keep me awake, angry at the sun for being too bright, and I felt angry at Hofstra for giving us low-quality blinds without allowing us to cover the windows with anything else.

Photo Observation 5

  1. Taken by me from the back of a camel in Israel.
  2. Theme: Shadows
  3. I took this picture in Israel last summer, and it is honestly one of my favorite pictures from the trip. Shadows are interesting because they can disguise something or morph it, like when you’re a little kid and you feel like a giant with your long shadow, or it can be an exact outline of its creator, as it does in this picture. It tells the story in literal black and white, almost as if these shadows were made for the purpose of telling a story as they would be in theatre.

Photo Observation

  1. http://www.digitalpicturezone.com/digital-pictures/30-shadow-photographs/
  2. Shadows
  3. Shadows can be a mystery like the last theme. It helps us open our mind with imagination because you can look at a shadow and think of the many things it can be. Everyone perceives something different. What I like about this photo is you can see the object but the shadow reflects something different. A circle with a shadow heart, two different shapes but the same object depending on the angle and lighting. Shadows are interesting and it is an art because you can create different shapes and play around with just a simple object.

Shadow of the Unfaithful

Source: George Nicholas’ Cinematography Class Shoot at the Lawrence T. Hubert School of Communication, December 8, 2016.

Theme: Shadow

Description: Taken inside the Comm Building studio, this photo was taken within a constructed bedroom. The walls, floor, bed, and window are fake, with everything seen being the only things built. While only this part of the set is shown, numerous lights shine onto the set and create shadows.

This photo physically and emotionally portrays the possibility of someone being unfaithful. The shadows across my face and on the female model attempt to hide us against the open window. However, there is light shining through that shows us through the shadows, unable to hide our sin. Despite staying around a paradise as seen from the window, both the model and I attempt to stay in the shadows away from prying eyes.
