Lighting Observation: 3/4

Date: 2/28/16

Time: 3:34 pm

Location: The Highline NYC

Objective Description: The sun has just started to go start it’s quick decent into the evening and just across the Highline, the Statue of Liberty could be seen. The sun was hitting it at such an angle that it was both reflecting off of it and creating a silhouette.

Subjective Description: The cool breeze sent chills across the spine as the warm sun opposed such sensations from the unusual heat of its rays on that warm February day. The sky was illuminated with hues of blues and pale yellows, revealing a pale pink gradient that painted the afternoon sky. The reflection of an object in the distance emphasized by the sun’s intensity left you no choice but to focus on that singular figure in the middle of a sparkling blue body of water. The silhouette of a woman reaching out towards the sky looked as if she was lighting her torch from the power of the Sun’s burning glow. Liberty was prominent.

Photo Observation: Shadow

image

This photo was taken by my roommate, Rachel Gurevich, for her self-portrait project.

Theme: Shadow

Description: A world of complete darkness envelopes the atmospheric haze. A black suffocation takes over as the last sliver of hope and the last trace of light swiftly sneaks away. The pavement, cold to the touch without the warmth of a gentle light, becomes cruel and unwelcoming. Yet, the supporting ground is the only sense of security as everything surrounding you starts to fade into the belly of blackness. Half of you begins to fade into the darkness as well, while the other half is illuminated by the dim glow that could disappear just as quickly. Darkness and light, shadow and form, and wholeness that soon disperses into the half that is now lost. The boundary between the two worlds is revealed.

Lighting Observation #6

Date:2/29/16 Time: close to 11pm Location: Unispan

Objective Description: The blurry glow of car lights in the distances contrasting with the dark night sky.

Subjective Description: As I walked across the Unispan from a long day of classes, 55, and time in the library I glanced out and saw the night. People, just like me, trying to make it back home after hours and hours of being out. As I stared the red and white lights from the cars became fuzzy balls of lights fading into the darkness of night. But as soon as some of the lights disappeared more would come. They were always moving and never stopped as if the only goal they had in life was to make it to their destination.

Photo Cred: Me

Theme: Shadow

Description: This is a picture I took on the Netherspan coming home from class. I like the way that the shadows from the window panes are cast across the floor from both sides making these criss cross patterns.

Photo Observation- Shadow

Theme: Shadow

Description: This photo is an example of shadow and works for the  theme since the shadows of their bodies are present. The sun is directly in front of the people which causes all three of their bodies to be a perfect silhouette. The silhouette adds an interesting twist to a regular shadow. It is almost as if there is no actual human figure instead just two black shadows for each person.

Lighting Observation 6

Date: 2/28/16

Time: 8:40pm

Location: Lowe 108

Objective description: The orange light from the street lights and lights on the side of Lowe shine on the side of the Nab and create shadows from the trees.

Subjective description: The warm orange light projects onto the cream concrete.  The orange is broken up by the curved shadows from the leaf-less trees.  Warped black lines criss cross over the side of the building creating unique patterns in the orange light.

Theme: shadow

Description: I picked this picture because I loved how most of it was in shadow.  The darkness is then cut by the harsh lines of square light that are slightly distorted where the floor meets the wall.  I also loved that because of the shadows, the cat is framed by light and it’s shadow shows up clearly on the wall behind it.

Photo Observation

Theme: Shadow

Description: This is one of my favorite pictures ever, and a totally awesome example of shadows. The tiny white lines at the feet of the camels are actually the camels, and the black camels you see are actually their shadows. At first glance, this picture looks like some kind of painting you may find on a cave wall because the shadows are completely flat black. I think this picture is an awesome example of shadows that are created based on where your viewpoint is – if you were to view this same scene from the ground, it would look entirely different, and not nearly as cool as it is when viewed from above.

Lighting Observation

Time: 10pm on Wednesday, at the Met

Objective Description: I watched the lights fade during the last scene of Manon Lescaut, where the title character dies.

Subjective Description: It was the last scene of the opera Manon Lescaut, and Manon and her lover were stuck in a wasteland. She was weak and dying. The light in this scene was pale blue and pale orange, and throughout the scene, the colors slowly faded to monotone colors. It was so subtle that I didn’t even pick up on it until Manon said her last words and died in her lover’s arms. It was then that I realized all of the color had left the scene and everything was somewhere between black and white. I was amazed with this lighting choice and thought it mirrored death perfectly.

Light Observation 5

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday February 25th, 2016 – 12:50pm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky had suddenly opened up without my knowledge, and something about the sun shining down from the near-middle of the sky at noon-ish, while it poured, made the scene look dramatically different than what it looked like as I walked into the reading, what I expected it to still look like outside.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Everything shimmered from the sunlight, having already diffused through the clouds on its way straight down, further refracted through all of the water falling through the air, which seemed to bathe everything in a deep blue tint. Something about the atmosphere was a bit whimsical, instead of being the typical depressing look of rain – being so dramatic it was as though it were a caricature of what a rain storm would look like, something I did not at all expect in February.
