Photo Observation #2

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 11.52.14 AM

2. The film FROZEN, picture edited by http://mickeyandcompany.tumblr.com/post/75554222816/some-people-are-worth-melting-for

3. Cold

4. This picture depicts cold on many different levels. First, because of the flurry of snow that is surrounding the subjects, their clothing, and the cold blue push of the light. The elements of the picture are suggesting a cold time, where everything is made of ice and unyielding to the warmth. There is a hint of a sunrise through the window trying to let the sun seep in, but the snow doesn’t cease and the coldness of the blue takes over. Secondly, the theme of cold is mirrored in Elsa (the  subject in the foreground)’s face. She’s cutting herself off from the warmth in Anna (the other subject)’s open arms and expression and freezing herself from anything else. She is isolated, and unyielding to others, like a frozen tundra. Cold often has two sides: the biting crudeness of its feeling, and sadness. Both of these feelings are expressed through the lighting, color, and expressions of the subjects.

Light Observation #2

1. 6:50 AM, February 2nd 2014. 9th floor, Alliance Hall.

2. The dense fog outside the window and the lights of the buildings and parking lot.

3. As I opened the window blinds in my dorm room, I saw nothing but the cold mist filling the morning air and blocking the view. The window that gave me a great view of the sunset the day before has suddenly become a magic mirror with the ominous gradation of color changing from pink and purple to blue and white. I could see the faint warm lights of the buildings outside floating like spirits and fairies. The mysterious sight reminded me of the Stephen King horror film, The Mist, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Feeling a little frightened, I closed the blinds again.

Skaftafell-ice-cave-1[2]

1) http://www.amusingplanet.com/2012/08/ice-cave-in-skaftafell-iceland.html

2) Cold

3) When I think of cold the colors that come to my mind are white and blue. This is an Ice cave in which the indirect daylight enters from both ends creating this tunnel of light. This picture is astounding because the variance in the shades of blue creates a submarine texture to the walls of the cave. The light blue shade almost seems electronic because of its unusual intensity.

Lighting Observation #2

1) February 1st, sunset, factory next to the Fairway market

2) Sunset against the smoke of the factory

3) The purple sunset light was dancing in the grey smoke of the factory. This lighting gave me contradictory feelings, the contrast of the pestilent smoke with the beautiful purple lighting just made the whole thing look like some kind of whimsical poison.

Photo Observation #1

image

1) 4:37 PM, December 30th 2013. Photo taken by me from the backseat of a car while driving near Mt. Fuji.

2) Sunset

3) As the road gets darker by the minute, the blinding rays of sunlight pours into the car brightening up the place as if it is wringing out the last bit of energy before disappearing. In contrast to the cloudy sky and blurred silhouette of mountains in the right window, the setting sun is not only bright and powerful but also serene like the moment of silence.

Light Observation #1

1. 21:40 PM, January 28th 2014. The parking lot, North Campus, Hofstra University.

2. Streetlight in the parking lot.

3. As I walked through the parking lot in the middle of the night carrying my things from my old room to the new one, my face and ears hurt from the cold air. Everything around me including my blue suitcase looked colorless and yellowish like in the tunnels because of the orange streetlight filling up the whole parking lot. The sight was reminiscent of the cold winter in the airports in Europe and reminded me of the childhood with the nostalgia of traveling and being away from home.

IMAG1126

1. Taken by myself outside Hofstra USA in the Fall of 2012

2. Sunrise/Sunset

3. This photo is of a sunset. It is particularly interesting because of the cloud formations, but the lighting itself is incredible. From bright whites and yellows to deep purples, this photo contains all the warmth of the day dimming down into night. It seems to have the daylight disappearing even as you look at the photo, letting night take over.

Light Observation #1

1. 7:15 AM, Wednesday, January 29th 2014. 614B Portsmouth House, Colonial Square.

2. Sunlight filtering through semi-opened blinds and hitting the floor and bed.

3. Eyelids twitching open from the unexpected brightness, I was suddenly awake with blinding beams of light biting into my eyes. The more awake I became, the more the room became a warm, peachy color.

Lighting Observation 1

1) Thursday 1/30/14, 7:41 AM, my dorm room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: At the back wall of our dorm room, there is a window which looks out to Oak Street. This morning, the light from the newly risen sun was streaming in through the blinds.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I looked at the window, I noticed a bright white light streaming in through between the blinds. The light stretched its fingers across the floor, creating a magnificent piece of artwork on the stained blue carpet on the floor. The light appeared pure white, like the color of a freshly fallen snow. To wake up to this beautiful image was a sign that today was going to be a good day.

Light Observation 1

1. 29 January, 4:30pm

2. I was walking back from classes with my friend, and as we were walking across the unispan, she said something and I looked at her at the right moment. Because of the setting sun, there was an angle of light that hit her eyes and across the rest of her face.

3. The streak of light was like that of a single line peeking through the blinds. The golden orange light was ethereal in its glow. The way it sprayed across her face was harsh at first glance, but when looked at further, how the light glistened in the reflection of her eye took on a magical property. And after just two quick steps, it vanished, leaving the shadow lacking in comparison.
