3) Theme: Romantic

4) When I saw this photo, I felt it fit the theme of romantic perfectly. The atmosphere in the room is calming and relaxing. Candles are what provides all of the lighting in this room. The rose pedals, champagne bottles and other items signify romance. I like the way the candles on the right hand side of the photo bring out the most light. You can see the reflection of the candle on the white wall of the room. Also, there are many shadows on the wall where the candles are not placed. You can see the different shades of lighting on the wall.

Photo Observation #9

1) Romantic Lighting

2) http://indulgy.com/post/jFApCw3oK1/romantic-lighting

3) Romance

4) Romantic lighting has a subtlety to it. It is not in your face. I would go so far as to say it’s classy, in my opinion. This photo obviously has purple lighting rather than the typical red, but I think that is what I like about it. It shares the subtlety of blue with the passion of red. It is literally a combination of those two colors. This makes purple the ideal romantic lighting color. Also, how the intensity of the light fades from the bottom up helps show that a limited area is lit, and this helps provide the idea of intimacy which is so important to a romantic encounter.

Light Observation #9

1) 4/4/2013, 12:45pm, Bits & Bytes

2) In Bits & Bytes, I was in line holding my two slices of pizza. Reflecting off of the cheese on the pizza were the lights above me.

3) The pizza’s cheese captured the lights above. It held the light on itself, and took on a plastic-like quality. The cheese became artificial. It was fake. Once the lights touched it, it became something else. A children’s plastic pizza toy to go along with a kitchen play-set. It was no longer itself, but merely an imitation of what it once was.

3) theme: Romantic

4) I was thinking about how romance is very intimate and this image is that for me.  The lighting is from very soft overhead lights and from the candles on the table.  This allows for visual aid, but darkens the rest of the room and brings the focus to the other individual(s) around you.  That makes it more intimate and can stimulate the romantic feeling to rise.  I love how just by darkening the surroundings and bringing the focus to someone across from you, the level of intimacy goes up, especially when the light is very soft.  I think that this is a delicate way to make a scene more romantic without going into color choices that scream romance.  It is subtle but has the desired effect.

Lighting Observation #9

1) 4/1/13 at 6:30am, sitting in a kitchen making breakfast

2) The light from the sun outside hitting a cat

3) This light awed me.  I had just woken up to the sun streaming into my face and had decided to make breakfast for my friend and her boyfriend, whom I was staying with over break.  I had picked up her fluffy orange cat and put him on the table so he could look outside and watch me cook, like he enjoys doing when the sun hit his fur.  It made him glow and turned him from an orange cat into a gold cat.  This made him look as if he was a god looking down at me because he has wild hair all around his face and it lit up like a golden halo.  This made me wonder at him and I accidentally burnt the eggs I was trying to make because I was so captivated by the sun hitting him from behind and illuminating him.

Photo Observation Week #9: Romantic

3) Theme: Romantic

4) It’s hard to think about the theme of romance and think about lighting instead of the subject material. There are so many ways to symbolize romance in our society, from hearts, to people kissing, even to the color red. Romance is exaggerated and yet in some ways trivialized. Romance is this big, passionate, fighting battle, it’s red and it’s loud and it’s shaped like a big heart. I think that romance in reality has this passion and fighting, but a lot of what romance is is truth and comfortability and allowing someone to be close to you. I think the lighting in this picture is exactly that. It does not distort the subject material. It shows the darkness and lightness of what is most important.

Light Observation #9

1) 3/29/13, my bedroom at home, 12:42pm

2) The sun was shining in through the window onto a shiny jar, and the mirror was picking up the bright reflection of the sun on the jar and shining it in my face.

3) Sitting in my bed, something irritating kept catching my eye. Looking up, a small, blinding ray of light hit me in the eye. It was not pleasant. I thought it was strange, because my blinds were half closed, that this amount of light had managed to find it’s way in to irritate me. The thing about light is that just closing part of your blinds won’t stop it, that pesky little bugger will find something to reflect off of and blind you that way instead.

Lighting Observation 8

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/20/13, 5:45 PM, Outside Breslin

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I have just walked out of my last class of the day and the sun is still shining brightly.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It may not be the most complicated lighting moment, but the fact that the sun is still out at nearly 6 makes me hopeful that Spring may still be on its way after all. Finishing the day and still having sunlight always seems like a sort of bonus for a job well done.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. 9:00 PM March 19th, 2013 – Room 314A Hague
  2. The orange-amber street line is shining through the raindrops on my window.
  3. As I laid down to take a quick nap before studying I looked at my closet door. A big orange square of light was there. The light was textured from the raindrops against the window. I laid there listening to Bon Iver watching the rain drops trickle down the window pane. Their shadows looked like shooting stars moving in slow motion. The way each drop wriggled it’s way down the window, the shadows left a long dark path behind them on my closet door. The square became distorted. It was in a constant state of melting away. The rain created a moving gobo for the light from the street lamp. As the box melted and the music played I fell into a melancholy daze. I began to doze off, the moving lights working as a visual metaphor to the uneasy changes my future faces.

1. Christmas Tree

2. Photo Taken by Kelley Malloy

3. Theme: Dealer’s Choice

4. Christmas lights will always be my favorite source of lighting. Their comforting glow is such a happy reminder of childhood that I cannot resist them. They are bright and cheery during the cold of winter, and in my personal opinion they are the only good thing about winter at all.
