Light Observation #2

1) 2/7/13 at 2:45am on Maple Avenue near my house

2) The street lamp on a corner.  The lamp is yellow because it is about to go out.

3) I often find myself walking home late at night or early in the morning because I lose track of time while working on things at Hofstra.  This morning was no different and I was walking quickly home in the early morning to grab a few hours of sleep.  On my way home, I have to walk under a series of bright street lamps, but today one of the lamps was going out and had a sick orange tint to it that made me pause.  This light was flickering and seemed to be holding on to life but was such a burnt orange look that it did not light up the street but made the street look darker.  This light seemed to emphasize the darkness around me and I found myself rushing to get away from that light and under a brighter light because I wanted to be under a brighter light, I guess I have watched too many horror movies and darkness scares me when I am alone.

Photo Observation #2

1) John is Creeping

2) Photo of my friend, John, and I during the filming process for the movie Exit

3) Theme: Single Light Source/Shadows

4) This picture demonstrates one of the many effects shadows can have on the perception of someone. All John did was look into the film shoot from the hallway and make a strange face. But the shadows created on his face from the light source to his right gives him a certain sinister look. It makes him appear much creepier just because of the shadows on his face, even when his intentions were not so. It makes me consider the power shadows could have onstage, especially with how the audience views characters.

Light Observation #2

1) 2/7/13, 6:50PM, Outside Vander Poel Hall

2) The lampposts were lit, a few emitting a white light, and a few emitting an orange light. There was one among the group of lights that emitted a violet light unlike any emitted from any other lamp. The violet light was almost entirely surrounded by the other lights on the sidewalk.

3) The violet light stood out. It stood out among the rest of the lights, a trumpet’s screech among the soothing sounds of flutes. And yet, as the other sets of lights surrounded this purple intruder, they did not smother its individuality, encompassing it in a wave of orange and white. Rather, they allowed it to blend with them to serve a common goal. The area had to be lit, and in exchange for allowing this rebellion of color to continue, the light must remain and spread its bright light to the ground, the wall, and the air around it.

Light Observation #2

1) 2/6/13, 7:45pm, Hofstra Student Center (outside)

2) There is a lamp that is outside of the student center. This lamp shines all around the front entrance. As people are walking into the building and out of the building, you can see their shadows on the ground from the light shining. The light is reflecting off the person or people that are walking.

3) The lamp outside of the building is very bright and acts as a guide to help people see where they are going. It stands tall and brings to life at night the atmosphere and environment that surrounds it. When the light is off, I can imagine the area to be quiet and dark which would not add any excitement or noise to the outside of the student center.

Photo Observation Week #2: Light Source/Shadows

2) Photo of a tree in the ocean creating a shadow which can be seen because of the light from the moon

3) Theme: Single Light Source/Shadows

4) This picture is very interesting because there is a lot to be seen. There is a tree in the middle of the ocean which can be seen because of the moon. The moon is causing the shadow of the tree to be seen in the ocean and it is providing light. The ocean also looks like a cloud that you can imaging walking on top of and you would not fall into the ocean. The sky also has different shades of blue which creates a peaceful atmosphere when you look at the photo.

Light Observation #2

1) 2/5/13, 7:19pm, Antony and Cleopatra Rehearsal, Lowe 106

2) Outside the closest window, across the parking lot, there is a streetlight, and the circle of light emitting from it is reflected in each of the vehicles below.

3) The streetlight outside emits a warm, orange light. You can’t quite see the light itself through the tree next to the window, but the sepia color tints the entire picture of the parking lot. The lot looks calm, and beckoning, compared to the more intense environment of the rehearsal inside, and the bright white frame of the window. It looks almost like an old fashioned, black and white movie, except for the modern cars, which adds to the feeling of being away from chaos. Along the rows of cars, the circle of light from the lamp is reflected in bright, round shapes, and the reflections are reminiscent of reflections of the sun during the day. Because of the lighting, the parking lot is still warm and inviting, despite the fact that the sun has long gone down.

Photo Observation Week #2: Single Light Source/Shadows

179354_1834885832920_5282262_n

2. Photo of myself, taken by Laurel Chausse in 2011.

3. Theme: Single Light Source/Shadows

4. The day before this photo was taken, I was watching a modeling show in which the models had to light themselves holding two large lamps. It didn’t seem too hard a task, but the models were struggling. It soon became clear why it was so difficult. Holding the light below my face creates a strange, non-human look. The bridge of my nose is completely in shadow, making it look as though it belongs to a shorter-nosed animal, like a cat. My cheekbones cast shadows to the sides of my eyes, which create a slightly creepy triangular eye effect, like the facemasks robbers use in the movies. My forehead is completely dark, giving the impression that I have a non-existent forehead, or at least bangs. Overall, the shadows create a mysterious, intense effect, and morph my face into something it is not. It is clear how powerfully light affects our perceptions of shapes. Faces, which seem common and unchanging, can be totally distorted by a single light.

Light Observation 1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 1/30/13 at 4:00 PM in my dorm room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: White string lights hanging from the wall are the only artificial lights illuminating my small dorm room. The afternoon sun comes in through the blinds.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I have finally taken down my multi-colored Christmas lights and replaced them with white lights instead. Though much dimmer than the standard overhead lights, they cast a warm inviting glow throughout the room that is far preferable to the harsh fluorescents. Having just hung these lights they make the entire room feel fresh and different, and miles away from the drab dorm room I left behind at the end of last semester. The addition of the soft afternoon sun streaming into the room from between the blinds makes the entire room feel so comfortable and homey, despite it’s often drab oatmeal appearance.

Photo Observation 1

1. Sunset

2. Photo taken by Kelley Malloy on 11/8/12

3. THEME: Sunrise/Sunset

4. DESCRIPTION:

The sunset shows something beautiful on an otherwise cold and dreary day. The snow is no longer crisp and clean, but brown and melted instead. The trees are all barren. But the sunset shines over them all, bringing a hint of beauty to the evening. The warm purples and reds and yellows blanket through the sky, pooling at the horizon. Though the details of a sunset may vary from day to day, it is always something to behold.

Photo Observation #1

2. Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

3.  If you sit and watch an entire sunset the process from beginning to end s a truly spectacular sight. When seen on a beach which provides no excess light or objects to interfere with  view its as if your watching a show. In this picture you see the final moments of the sunset, the moment where everything is still slightly visible but in a short amount of time the only light provided will be from the moon. I find that at that moment the colors are truly spectacular, the sky turns shades of pinks and purples which contrast against the giant sphere of fiery yellow and orange. Its calm and serene watching the sunset, it takes away all the stress thats been building up inside, as you watch the massive sun move past the horizon and disappear.
