3. Intrigue

4. This picture screams intrigue to me. A girl in a deep red dress, her face covered by an old gas mask. Around her, smoke in every direction. You can’t distinguish her surroundings, except for a few trees. The light, coming down in rays around her. The story remains mostly unknown to the viewer, just this scene prominent in the mind. Why is she there? What has happened? I want to see her face and know her background. She is illuminated by rays of light surrounding her. The light catches the smoke, contributing to the overall feel of unease and sheer creepiness, but also allowing the beauty of the moment to show through. Despite what seems to be obvious destruction, there is something beautiful about it.

Light Observation 9

1) 3/30/12, 12:38, Design Studio

2) Light from the light box

3) tracing a figure of a dancer from sketch pad paper to water color paper, I look up and see the reflection of light from the light box through the window in the studio. I looked at the bags under my eyes and sighed as I knew it would be another long night for myself and the others in the studio.

3) Intrigue

4) The sunlight reflecting through the wave is what I find to be very intriguing. The colors of the sunset are beautiful to begin with. the way the colors enfold the whole wave makes the surfer brighten up.

Lighting Observation #8

1) 3/29/12 – 10:32AM – Between Estabrook Hall and the Student Center

2) On my way to class, the sun was shining above the Student Center, and backlighting the daffodils.

3) As I walked past the shadow of the looming towers on my way to class, the sun showed its smiling face. Its smile poured onto everything in sight: the trees, the walkway, the grass, and most importantly, the daffodils. The sunlight poured right through the them, illuminating their beautiful yellow petals like little yellow suns. The sunlight gave the daffodils life, and they danced through the meadow. The dancing daffodils brought a smile to my face and a skip to my step all throughout the day.

Light Observation #9

1. March 28th – 7:15PM – train ride between Penn and Mineola Stations

2. The very last few minutes of the sunset

3. We had spent a long day in the city, and started to head back to Hofstra at 7. After only a stop or two, I began to realize the magnificent sunset occurring right outside my window on the train. The sky was a brilliant shade of pink along the horizon, slowly fading into a grey-blue. The sun hung low in the sky, the brightest orange I’ve ever seen. Streaked across the sky were clouds, all of which were light purple-grey in color. The moment captured my attention and kept me entranced until the sun sunk low beneath the horizon and the stars began to come out. It reminded me so much of summer back home, with beautiful, brilliant sunsets in colors that you can never seem to name or recreate. It’s like sitting by the pool in the evening, with a fire lit and the night moths flying past our faces. The only thing missing in the moment was the smell of too much bug spray and an excess of laughter.

3) Intrigue

4) This photo perfectly represents intrigue. The juxtaposition of the natural forest to the electrical lamps creates a sense of wonder and mystery. The moment you see this picture your brain starts asking a million questions. Why are there lamps in the forest? Where are they leading? Who put them there? What are they plugged into? Is it magic? The photo is actually taken at dusk, but with the coverage of the trees, it seems really dark, so the warm incandescent light coming from the lamps jump off the page and invite you in. You want to follow the trail of bright beautiful lamps to wherever it leads.

Photo Observation #9 – Lee Moore – Intrigue

3. The word “Intrigue” brings to mind the 1940’s. Film Noir, Smoky bars, and the deep voiceover as the pretty lady in red enters the detectives office. This photo seems like almost a modern film noir, all sepia tones with a cigarette glow front and center. The shadows around her eyes, and covering most of her face make you wonder what exactly is haunting her mind. The glow behind her beckons to worlds beyond her darkened form, making the viewer question what stands between her and them.

intrigue

There is absolutely nothing more intriguing than the great outdoors. The National Parks, man’s desire to conquer or be one with nature, there is a mystery of nature that will never be solved, yet we keep trying. There is something fantastic about what we don’t know. I think sun and shadow made purely by nature is the most intriguing lighting that can be found.

Photo Observation

2. By Ryan Pohlner, taken in Ocean City, MD on June 18, 2011.

3. Intrigue

4. Light in itself is incredibly intriguing. This photo I found was to be just that. Light drawing you to a source.

I picked this specific picture because I lately have been feeling a little homesick and nostalgic. I’m from Maryland, so Ocean City was  a staple in my childhood vacations. I remember the treat that was the boardwalk and running on the beach at night, which somehow was WAY more exciting than being on the beach during the day.

I love that this photo is taken from the beach and is looking towards the boardwalk. The light is literally exploding off the boardwalk, and lighting up everything surrounding it. You feel alone surrounded by the darkness of a beach at night, but the light ahead reminds you of the life and excitement and is drawing you to it like a moth to a flame.

Lighting Observation

1) Wednesday March 28, 2012 around 6:00 pm

2)  The light hitting the library

3) I was walking to Bits with a friend to grab some dinner the other night. The sun was just about set, casting the library in this bright golden light. However, because of the angle, the library was the only thing lit. The surrounding buildings were shrouded in darkness, drawing even more attention to the mass building that is the library.

Because it was a late sunset, the light was pure gold, which reflected off the windows, making it seem ever brighter. Compared to the desolate, dark buildings surrounding it, the library looked like a temple, Nirvana, or some great place to pay homage to, not a grimy college library where 70 year old men go to pleasure themselves.

By the time we left Bits, the sunset was gone, and the building had gone dark, like the others around it. I was glad to experience that brief moment of blinding beauty, even if it was fleeting.
