Lighting Observation #5 – Creepin’ in Front of the Office

1)      March 1st, 2012, 10:00PM, Second Floor of Lowe

2)      I was walking back from the bathroom when I got a glimpse of Rych’’s computer screensaver through his window. There was a multitude of colors spinning in a pattern.

3)      After another fun night in Lowe, I was ready to leave when I was coming out of the bathroom. I was worrying that I wouldn’t find a lighting moment until I got a glimpse at a plethora of color. I spotted Rych’s screensaver through the window of his office when walking to the Design Studio. There were so many colors spinning it a set pattern. The hypnotic effect trapped me for a while as I studied the pattern and the neon lights spinning around. The lights moved with grace while constantly changing color. As I caught myself staring, I was wondering what it would have been like if Rych was still in the office and caught me staring at his computer. It would be creepy. I couldn’t help myself though, the lights were calming me in a rather stressful situation. For a quick second, I had no worries and thought to myself, it’s not the end of the world. After I broke free, I ran back into the design studio yelling “I had a lighting moment”. No one was amused. I then realized at that moment, that the end of the world was coming.

Lighting Observation #4

1) 2/29/11 8:32AM Quadship Enterprise.

2) The room was very dimly lit through the window by the grey, cloudy sky outside.

3) As I woke up, I rolled over towards the window expecting to be blinded by a bright ray of sunlight. Instead I was greeted by a dark, dreary morning. The sky was grey, the greyest shade of grey you can imagine. Not the bright white light of a beautiful sunny day, and not the dark grey, almost black sky before a storm, but grey, the most dreary, dreadful, indecisive grey. The sky could not decide whether or not it was going to rain, so a blanket of fog hung over the tops of the buildings and trees. The sky also could not decide where the sun was, so all of the clouds emanated what little, dull light they could. This was going to be the start of a no good very bad day.

THEME: Single Light Source

A lot of my free time is spent on tumblr, reblogging pretty pictures and entertaining animations. This picture came up from one of my favorites, which is dedicated to books and the beauty therein. I have a huge thing for books, and flowers are generally nice as well. What I love about this picture is how old the books look, how torn and dusty and slightly broken they all are, and yet they are still beautiful. They maintain the story and the subsequent effect it can have on the reader, despite their age. The rose is the same way. It’s old and dried and kind of wrinkled, but it still maintains its beauty. I like how soft and subtle the light in the picture is. For all that it’s a single source coming from behind, the shadows aren’t overbearing and everything is still visible. The way the light kind of fades away around the edges of the object and everything is the dusty yellow of worn but still alive.

3. Single Light Source

4.I really like this picture because it’s obviously one source of light, but tells a story. It shows a guy doing what he loves to do in the dead of night, with only one street light on him, and that is all he needs. Being an actor, I’ve learned your work starts when there are no lights, no makeup or sets or anything. It comes in solitude, with maybe one light on in the room as you work to figure out how to best portray a character. That is where the homework happens. This guy exemplifies that: hard work when no one is watching is the work that ultimately leads you to succeed.

Light Observation!

27 February, 2012
South Campus, near the library
Around  7:15 am

I’m walking to my room early in the morning, after the sun has risen and lit the campus with morning light. As I’m heading towards the library from the western side of south campus, I have a perfect view of the tower that is the Axinn Library. The early morning light hits the western face of the building, turning it gold.

Coupled with the stark blue of the morning sky with no clouds to be seen, it made for an easy representation of Hofstra Pride. After having pulled an all-nighter, it was kind of like a little boost of encouragement from the architecture, the bones of the school itself. Yes, it’s worth the time and effort, if only so you can share in the unifying little moments of pride like this one. I’ll admit, I was slightly delirious from lack of sleep and an overabundance of water coloring, so I might not have been entirely awake. But it was a nice moment, and I’m glad that my tired self didn’t miss or ignore it.

single light source

this photo has a single light source coming from the left of the cow. I have totally fallen in love with this picture. The shadows cast on the cows face darken her eyes and give her a bit of mystery. The expression on her face is enhanced by the contrast between light and dark.

Light Observation 5

1. 3/1/12, 5:34, Calkins quad

2.The clouds parted and the sun with a small bit of sky could be seen through the hole. Small rays of light could be seen in that one little area of sky and sun.

3. I was walking back from directing in the speigal theater and looked up and the clouds had parted a little for the sun. It was a beautiful sight to have the small hole of light through the dark depressing clouds. It was like a ray of hope through a long storm. It fit with the feelings I’m sure we all had about Much Ado being ready for opening. Now all the work is done and the sun may break up the clouds and clear away the storm for the show. Also it was really amazing to see a small patch of sun and blue sky which haven’t been seen for a few days

Lighting Observation #5

1. 3/1/2012 at 11:30 p.m. in my room.

2. The two lights in our ceiling, one is on, the other is off.

3. Sitting in my room and staring at my computer as I go through moments during the week I had with lighting, I couldn’t decide which to use. I look behind me and notice something; there’s a lighting moment happening right in my room! The effect of one light being on and the other being off caused this effect of life and mystery. Even though I know what is in the dark part of the room I had this thought that anything could pounce out of there at any moment, that is how dark it was. I was in the lit part of the room, and the feeling of comfort being in that part really made me feel safe, and somehow the objects seemed more alive then normal. I guess that sort of thing happens when your in a room by yourself, and a lighting moment happens right where you live.

Light Observation #5

1) 3/1/12, 11:30 pm, outside Leiden

2) fire lights up two girls’ faces as they go in to light their cigarettes

3) On a cold, wet night, two girls who are apparently stressed out, go outside to light a cigarette for a chance to relax. It is dark outside and even through the small flame emitted from the lighter, it feels like these two girls could be sitting around a campfire telling ghost stories or roasting marshmallows.
