Lighting Observation #3

1) 2/22/12-9:37-Emily Lowe Hall

2) I witnessed a lightsaber battle while someone went around the building shutting off the hall lights as the battle itself moved.

3) A dark hallway. A beam of blue light appears, then a beam of red. The two beams confront in battle. Attack. Par. Attack. Par. The red beam moves towards the light spilling at the end of the hallway. The blue pushes it forward. The closer to the spill of light, the more the two opponents faces are revealed. A Jedi and a fighter of the Dark Side. Shadows fall under their eyes, you can see just enough of their faces to see the anger and aggression behind their violent attacks. As the battle moves closer and closer to the lit hallway, the two fighters are revealed as two college students. The illusion that the darkness brought with it is gone. The lights go out. The Jedi and Dark Side Fighter are back in action. The illusion is restored and the galactic battle continues.

nightlife

I chose this photo for nightlife because when I think about nightlife i feel like the events are more important than the surroundings. In movies and TV shows the focus is on the events and the surroundings are blurred and not distinct. I picked this picture because the light is the yellow of a streetlight and the camera has a fisheye lens so it isn’t natural. The lights on the buildings are very bright but not individually distinguishable.

3) Night Life

4) This photo represents a midsummer’s night laying in the front yard looking at stars. Being in New York, we don’t get to see many stars at all, so when I’m home in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, I truly appreciate the vast amount of stars in the sky. The millions of bright stars contrast with the dark blue of the night sky. Each one stands out on its own, and laying on your front lawn, you realize that each star is this giant ball of gas out in space. You then realize how big the universe must be in order to hold all of these millions of stars. Earth is just this tiny rock in the midst of this infinite universe, and each of our lives, each of our day-to-day problems are so insignificant when you look at the big picture. That’s what this photo represents.

Lighting Observation #4

1) Saturday February 18th, 2012 – 4:00 P.m. – Midtown tunnel

2) The lights in the tunnel are fluorescent type lights separated every two feet or so, this makes a cool effect when driving through the tunnel, because it’s wave after wave of orange light.

3) This really was a fascinating moment, I felt as if I was a child getting all giddy about some cool lights making some cool pattern. The effect being produced made me feel like I was a film reel, being noticed frame by frame, The action the car changed as my friends and I danced because these lights worked quite well as party lights, they gave rhythm to the moment, and thats something that is a function of light that is usually forgotten.

3) THEME: Night Life

4) In Los Angeles, the freeways are the life, the veins of the city.  The 5, the 10, the 210.  605.  57.  710.  134 and 110.  New York might be the city that never sleeps, but Los Angeles is the city that never stops.  Living in the valley, it’s inevitable that you will end up on a freeways if you are traveling more than a couple miles away.  One of the signature features of the tightly knit freeway system is the stack interchanges and spaghetti junctions – weaving layers of offramps and bypasses as 9.8 million people move about their lives. This photo brings me back to those roads.

There is a cleanliness to long exposure photography.   Objects become blurs of motion.  Blurs become streaks, streams.  Anything that isn’t static simply disappears.  Rivers of light flow across the road as hundreds of vehicles flow by while the shutter stays open.  Light becomes the single most important thing in the photo when the cars dissapear.  The city behind glows.  In areas where only a few vehicles pass, there appear to be no cars.  The lanes with the most traffic, on the other hand, are a wash of reds and whites.  Even when reduced to nothing more than their lamps, you can feel the motion of the traffic flowing before you.  Driving out for the night, headed home after work, meeting a wife, an old friend or a blind date—Oh your way there you become just another part of the flow, a streak of light in the night.

3) Theme Nightlife

4) the Image is of a room with neon paint drawings on the wall, and some splashed on the floor, all being lit with a blacklight causing the trippy drawings to glow. This photograph represents nightlife to because of the colors being utilized. Yellows, greens, reds, and blues neon enough to be highlighters give a sense of adventure and fun. Even the highlighted paint on the floor makes the image look busy, as if it was inhabited with many people. The blacklight gives a cool blue light on all that isn’t being highlighted and that gives the impression of nighttime. Lastly, the position of the light source is randomly balanced upright on the floor, it wasn’t hung, it wasn’t planned; it was spontaniously placed on the floor and a big part of nightlife is spontaneity.

Photo Observation!

THEME: Night Life

I come from a town notorious for the copious amounts of rich, old white people – meaning that it’s a small town with very little to do. There is, however, the waterfront. Edmonds is right on the coast of Puget Sound, so the beach is often frequented by the local high schoolers and would-be hooligans. Downtown Edmonds has a ferry terminal where two ferries take turns docking to carry bored townspeople to the equally boring Kingston thirty minutes across the Sound. However, some things Edmonds and the neighboring suburbs do have going for them is visual appeal – trees galore. Couple that with the picturesque ocean view and you’ve got yourself one hell of a panorama.

Now, the ‘night life’ aspect comes from all of that context up there. When my friend Emma and I are hanging out and don’t have much to do, we’ll generally just go driving around in her car. Around the unlit streets of Woodway with towering evergreens (when we turn off her headlights and pretend to be in a spaceship [totally safe]), down the highway, and eventually along the waterline. We generally end up parked by the beach facing the Sound, watching the ferries go back and forth before they park it for the night. This of course leads to lots of deep, meaningful conversations – as well as the usual silly shenanigans we get up to. At any rate, this picture represents MY night life (or lack thereof), consisting of friends, conversation, and a panoramic view.

The ferry is bright and busy looking, like it’s gotten all gussied up for a night on the town. That in itself allows for contrast on a realistic level, as the town doesn’t get that much action. But on a personal level, I am usually more than happy to just sit back and watch the ferries while Emma and I bitch about life. The fairy lights ferry lights are reflected in the Sound, bringing the water into focus, which is something I really associate with my idea of home. That coupled with how much time I did and do spend at the waterfront fills me with familiarity, as well as a little homesickness. The golden reflection against the pitch black of the water puts me in mind of the depth of the water itself as well as the potential the town actually has, in beauty and entertainment – at least for me.

Light Observation 4

1. 2/20/12, 5:02, outside Emily Lowe Hall

2. The sun was going down and the sky was a deep blue, darker than day time but lighter than dusk, and the sun was still high enough to shine through the trees on the quad making them seem pink.

3. I was walking from the Playhouse after a day of painting to go work on my set rendering in the design room. I looked up and stopped because the sky looked really beautiful. The trees on the quad seemed to have a pink tinge on them from the remaining light from the sun and the sky was a deep blue. It reminded me of a paradise or cotton candy. It felt sort of like a moment a bliss before I went into the depressing design room. Like my last ray of light before I spent the rest of the night under fluorescents.

Light Observation #4

2) The flickering streetlight right by the Gronigen House.

3) I was walking back from Dutch treats with a friend. We were listening to my iPod when the “Trashing the Camp” from the Tarzan Soundtrack came on. We stopped and started to sing and dance. I accidentally hit the streetlight. It flickered on and off. I thought that it couldn’t be more appropriate considering in the soundtrack, the animals hit items and caused interesting reactions.

3. Night Life

4. The first thing I thought of for night life is a city and fast paced. A light trail from a long exposure gives that fast paced look because all that can be seen is the lights. No cars are visible so it seems like the cars are moving too fast to be seen. Night life is fast paced because it is normally just in the city where everything is fast. In a town there isn’t much life after it gets dark. However in a city life is always going and thats what I think the light trail portrays. Life constantly moving and if you blink you may miss it.
