Journal Entry

1) March 17th, 2:20, Royston’s office

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Royston only has a desk lamp on. It is lighting up his face so that his silhouette is projected against the wall.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The shadow of Royston is very definite. I can see the shape of his face and his mouth moving. It is hard to pay attention to what he is saying because his shadow is so fascinating. I want to trace it and make a Royston silhouette to hang up in my room.

Photo Observation 7

ATTRIBUTION: http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/5329/rainy-day.jpg

THEME: Sad

DESCRIPTION: The street is desolate in the rain.  The street lamp spills onto the sidewalk and the little water droplets pick up light in the process.  The benches are lonely because no one is sitting on them in the rain.  The high street lamps cast a perfect shadow of the slotted bench on the ground.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 7)

1) Wednesday at 830 pm, walking back to Nassau/ Suffolk, at the weird looking tree in the circle near the graduate housing

2) 5 or 6 street lights, casting light on me, and the tree

3) As I was walking back, I thought I saw someone walking behind me out of the corner of my eye, I turned to see it was my own shadow even though there was another in front me. It was then I noticed that I had many shadows surrounding me, created by the circular arrangement of street lights. Some of the shadows were sharp as the light was close and direct, but others were more blurred and obscure as the light was diffused through the tree. It created a very strange, almost star shaped pattern of shadows surrounding me. This was a very unnatural scene because usually I am accustomed to only seeing one shadow from one light source at a time, but this threw me off and unnerved me. It made me feel like people were following or watching me.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 7)

1) Monday, 10:30 pm, outside Dempster near Cafe on the Quad

2)Lamp through tree

3) As I was walking back, I noticed these long shadows on the ground. A lamp was shining through the branches of long tree and was casting very long shadows on the ground. The shadows were curving, twisting, and intertwining, against a yellow/brown ground. The scene was fairly dark except for the faint light provided by the lamp, dimmed further by the branches. The light created an eerie and mysterious feeling with the long, drawn out shadows on the pavement. They looked like arms reaching out for something as they stirred in the breeze. Or flimsy noodles.

Photo Observation

While in most cases a beam of light through the darkness gives one a warm and hopeful feeling, but to me, when light is shining through bars, it actually has the opposite affect. The fact that the light is being blocked gives it almost a feeling of inaccessibility, as if the hope and light are just out of reach.

Lighting Observation 2

When: Tuesday Morning

Where: Field at sun set

Objective: Someone lighting a cigarette at night

Subjective: As my friend lit his cigarette, the lighter lit up his face. This had two affects. The light from below brought out shadows as well as the color in his face. Normally, when light hits from below it makes someone look eerie, but in this case, the warm color of the fire gave his face a warm glow that was almost complimentary.

Lighting Observation

When: Monday Afternoon Where: My apartment Objective: Light is mostly hidden by our next door neighbor’s house, but a slim beam of light went past the house and in through my kitchen window. The beam was visible from where the neighbor’s house was straight through my kitchen Subjective: This was a really cool affect, and definitely brought the warm feeling the sun gives you into the house. The architecture of the neighbor’s house was well defined by the beam of sun, bringing out the angles and textures.

1st Light Observation Week 7

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 03/12/11 Dorm Room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Light from the cellphone reflecting on one side of a persons face and the light from a street lamp on the other side

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the light crept in through the window from the street lamp and fell upon my friend it felt warm and some what comforting. The light on the other side of him from his cellphone felt cold, uninviting, and unatural. The combination of the two created a creepy division.  It almost had a Jekyll and Hyde feel.

2nd lighting observation

1) March 16th – 5:35 p.m – Stairwell of my dorm building: I had my second lighting moment when I went to go get my laundry on Wednesday evening.

2) When walking down the stairwell to retrieve my laundry I noticed the overhead lights that lit the stairway. The are fluorescent lights and illuminate a lot of light for the size they are. The light looked old and dingy kind of reflecting the stairwell itself.

3) As I was walking down to the laundry room on Wednesday I noticed the lighting that we have in our stairwell in Suffolk hall. Hanging fluorescent lights that are placed over the door as well as to the right side of the door when you open it illuminate the entire stairwell from the bottom floor to the 6th. I was surprised that these were the only lights and that there was nothing overhead. The feel of these lights made me think of a grimy, dingy hotel room in a movie or a bad vacation experience. The stairwell itself added to this feel because of the chipped paint and the rusty railing as well as the cement cell-block feeling you get when you walk down the stairs. This light was perfect in keeping up with the decor or the area. The light felt cold but strong. I also was imagining a scene from a court/detective tv show where they interrogate the suspects under a light that makes them look pale and empty. This would be well incorporated in a scene that called for that mood.
