Photo Observation 2

Seekonk, MA around 2011 or 2012

Cold

This photo was taken when I was a child and my oldest brother was throwing me into a thick pile of snow in the driveway. It is a snow covered scene which shows that it is cold but I think that the complete lack of warm toned light shows that as well. There is a light dusting of white across the whole scene because it was actively snowing and the sky is a monotonous grey. Without any variation in color or texture in the sky, the scene feels deeply cold without any room for warmth or even just coolness.

Photo Observation #2

  1. Netherlands Dance Theater from a piece called “Figures of Extinction” – 2023
  2. Cold
  3. This photo is a still from a work called “Figures of Extinction by Nederlands Dans Theater. This picture is very cold to me because there is something unnerving about the energy with just the hands illuminated. It feels like the hands are coming out of darkness searching for something but they are met by a harsh white light. You can just barely make out the faces of the dancers but that is not the focus of the image. The limbs feel detached and to me appear like the branches of a dead tree or a tree without leaves in the wintertime. This image feels cold due to the harsh lighting and physical detachment portrayed.

Photo Observation #2

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 14

Theme: Cold

Upon first glance there is the obvious. Two of these characters standing close together, leaning on one another. The way that they are dressed, bundled and buttoned up in coats and hats letting you know that the weather is cold. The way the light hits the characters in this photo is also very telling. Coming and hitting them in on their right, illuminating half of their face, casting a shadow on the other half of their bodies. The way that the lights and shadows work together in the photo work together to amplify that it is night, and that they are cold.

Photo taken by me, Hofstra University, 02/12/2025, 9:26am

3) THEME: cold

4) DESCRIPTION: The first true snow fall of the semester. Airy and soft the overcast of the clouds in the sky illuminates the Earth with the brightest white light. The snow is still powdery, as the sun has yet to warm the earth and melt the snow, before it eventually freezes and turns to ice again. The white winter rejects the sun, and its rays bounce off the trees. the rocks, and the dirt.

Photo Observation #2

Photo taken by me, Feb. 15 2025

Theme: Cold

It was snowing this day. Snowing but only sticking on the harshest and coldest of surfaces. Still it was as good a day as any to explore and find some joy and newness in the stark beauty of what was a very cold day, as is obvious in the picture. I do not refer to the actual temperature, but the stark whiteness that washes a sort of melancholy peace over the world. There is no warm bright sun to reassure and comfort, just the full brightness of the sun dispersed over the cloud covered sky, somehow almost giving the feel that the whole word is under the brightest of spotlights, on display and exposed. Without us looking for the good it easy for this cold atmosphere to remind us of the emotionless and the clinical.

Photo Observation 2/20

Photographed by me January 13th in Manhattan

Theme: Cold

A busy winter afternoon outside the Starbucks reserve in the city. People are pacing up and down the street, business calls are being made left and right, and cars are honking simultaneously. The sun is running away from us, and it creates a dim light. This forces the car’s headlights to look even brighter, highlighting the nasty traffic taking place. I feel this image represents what New York is in the wintertime, it’s not the wonderland you see in the movies.

Photo: Romain Grosjean’s crash in the Bahrain 2020 Grand Prix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7_En2xEm4) How Romain Grosjean survived 'biggest crash' of the 21st century as chassis unveiled in London Exhibition - F1 - SPORTbible

This was taken during the 2020 Bahrain grand prix when Romain Gorsjean crashed. The car split completely in two. While one would think he died since he crashed at an estimated 67 gs, he got out, he walked out of the fire, all with some minor burns. However, after he crashed he stayed in the car for twenty eight seconds. Twenty eight seconds where no one knew if he had died or not. Which is why I think this is one of the coldest photos I’ve ever seen. While it is a fire, the backstory of this photo is not warm, which is why I consider this photo cold, just from the feeling of dread that passes over me every time I see it.

Photo Observation #2

From Severance

Theme: Cold

Four of the main characters are in an empty room, the walls are white and the carpet is green, and they only have florescent lighting over head. There is no variation in the lighting, they are all well-lit but it just leads to a flat and artificial feeling. The characters are all distanced from from each other and have shocked or angry expressions on their faces, giving an unsettling feel to the picture. The light is florescent and cool toned white, the walls are blank and white making the setting feel very cold and unwelcoming.

2) Photographer Gregory Crewdson’s untitled work from his Beneath the Roses photo series.

3) THEME: Cold

4) DESCRIPTION: In this piece of Gregory Crewdson’s work, the photographer uses a cool, blue tinted top light to create an unnerving atmosphere to assist with telling a story losing a lover. The pockets of shadows and cooler soft light aid with separating the lost lover from the rest of the warmer house that she may have shared with her partner. The photographer wisely uses the contrast of these warmer and cooler tones to help aid the audience in getting into the depressive head space of the subject.

Photo Observation #2

  1. Photo from The Walking Dead (Season 7, Episode 1)
  2. Cold
  3. The blue tinted fog mixed with the white head beams casts a shadow towards the main villain of the season. This leads the audience to only be able to see the outline of his body. Without any warm lighting, this leaves a feeling of unknown and leaves the audience in a state of alert. I think cold lighting is something that captures your eye and keeps you in the moment.
