3) Single Source Artificial Lighting

4) DESCRIPTION: The person in the photo’s focus is backlit by a light source invisible to the viewer. Beams of light cut through the haze that adds an eerie feeling to the image. The light is bright white, leaving the figure colorless, just a shadow.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Estabrook, 6:00pm, 3/3/2022

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A rainbow shone through my friend’s window and displayed its colors on her bedspread. The sunbeams made visible the dust particles floating around the room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the sun began to set, Erin’s west-facing window received and reflected the beams in the form of rainbows into the room. Her pale pink bedspread was sprinkled with multicolored light streaks. Dancing dust particles glowed golden in the beams of light bursting through the sky, ending their journey in our laps. The moment felt like youthful joy, when magic was still a possibility and hope was everlasting.

Photo Observation: Nightlife

2) This is a stock image of the Atlanta skyline taken from Piedmont Park. (https://stock.adobe.com/images/view-of-midtown-atlanta-from-the-skyline-picture-point-in-piedmont-park-at-dusk-usa/176972760)

3) THEME: NIGHTLIFE

4) DESCRIPTION: The water is still and dark, reflecting the bright and busy multicolored lights shining from the city skyline in the background. Though the park is quiet, illuminated only by warm street lamps, its emptiness is really just buzzing anticipation of the rush of nightlife to come, which is seen in the bright lights glowing from the skyline. The night sky is brightened with the skyline’s radiating shine; beauty is created by light pollution. That’s the wonder of nightlife, though: a good time can happen anywhere, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city or in a warm, dimly lit park.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: My friend Erin’s house in Rockland County, NY; Tuesday, February 22, 2022; 2:30 a.m.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A multicolored scent wax-melting lamp shone different shades of red, yellow, blue, and pink light on the wall in an otherwise unlit room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Though the room was silent and dark, as most are (and probably should be) in the middle of the night, the multihued stained glass wax-melter glowed its many colors on the wall. The soft heat, scent, and ambience created by the lamp warmed the hearts of the friends quiet in awe of the moment. The colors and warm glow were angelic, creating peaceful feelings all around.

3) THEME: COLD

4) DESCRIPTION: The bleak landscape fades into the distance, obscured by the frigid, ever-thickening fog. I chose this image because I think the coloring and lighting of the image is really interesting and demonstrates the theme of COLD well. The gradient created by the lighting, with the dark, almost monochromatic lower-left corner fading into the burst of color in the blue sky and hazy green field. It displays the idea of winter pushing the warm, temperate weather away, and because of this, it feels transitional. The frost on the ground towards the side of the road reflects the bright daylight and glows around the bases of the trees.

Lighting Observation

1) Estabrook 7th floor, 10:15pm, 2/16/2022

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My friend got what she calls a “sunset lamp” for Christmas and let it illuminate the room. It shone and spun multicolored beams of light across the ceilings and walls.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The colors danced across the barren walls and frolicking bodies. The beams of light rhythmically pulsed and drifted across the room, illuminating smiles and creating laughter. Fueled by the glowing beams of light and collective joy, for just a moment, we all lived in pure bliss. The jubilation shone almost as brightly as the sunset lamp itself.

Photo Observation: Romance

2) This is a photo taken in Murray River National Park, South Australia. This photo was taken by Wayne England. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/29005492@N07/8947904173)

3) THEME: ROMANCE

4) DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because it displays beautifully the multi-faceted aspects of romance, and almost tells two love stories in one image. The bright, yet solitary moon suspended and glowing amidst the hazy and intimidating clouds displays one aspect of romance: the tunnel vision often experienced when one falls in love. The one and only focus of the sky is the moon; everything else is hazy and unclear. The warm and inviting campfire juxtaposes the spotlight-like moon, displaying the passion of romance. The soft orange glow emitted by the campfire illuminates the surroundings, asking for campfire songs to be sung and spreading its fervor beyond the actual fire. I love the mix of cool and warm tones, as romance never feels one exact way. It’s a mix of emotions, colors, and feelings, just like the image displays.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Friday, February 4, 2022; 9:15 PM; Netherlands North Back Gate

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky was pitch black, but the street lights cast yellow beams through the slots of the turnstile, projecting out towards the dorms and shining in the thick fog.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The subtle but stark contrast between the sparkling, bright white beams in the fog and the gloomy and empty veil cast over the sky created an eerie, haunting, almost ghostly mood. The haze was blinding, hiding the details of the deserted surroundings, silent with sleep. No clouds walked the skies, but the soft glow of the moon in the distance created a gradient in the background. The air was full of anticipation, on edge waiting for the next sudden scream or yell of excitement.

Photo Observation

2) I took this photo on February 4, 2021 at 7:22 a.m. while driving to school in Atlanta, Georgia. I saw the sunrise in my rearview mirror and got out of my car to capture its beauty.

3) THEME: SUNRISE/SUNSET

4) DESCRIPTION: This photo depicts the epitome of a winter sunrise in Atlanta: a mix of bright, warm colors washing away the cool tones of night. The clouds glow coral orange from the sun shining as it rises from beneath the skyline of houses. I think this photo is especially interesting lighting-wise because of the street lamp’s radiating glow; this displays the true earliness of the morning, as the remnants of darkness have not completely faded away. The way the clouds fan out from the sun reminds me of physical sun rays, almost reaching out to spread its light. It feels hopeful; like taking the first sip of coffee, feeling the softness of the rug next to my bed on my feet, and picking up my bags as I get ready for the coming day.
