Spring Photo Observation

Attribute: Google Search

Theme: Spring

Description: I chose this photo for a few reasons. One is because I like how visible the sun beams are. When I think of spring I think of sun beams probably because there is something new about that and I often think of the sun in the spring. I also chose this image because of where the light is coming from. The sunlight looks like it is coming from a rising sun and another thing that comes to mind when I think of Spring is the idea of rebirth and newness so the direction fits. I also liked in this picture how the sunlight illuminated the bits of orange on the ground because those warm tones are such a stark contrast to the rest of the image and the sunlight draws out that warmth even more.

Spring Picture

  1. This is a stock photo that I found on Google.
  2. Theme: Spring
  3. I chose this picture because I felt that the warmth of the light gives a good contrast to the harsh light I associate with Winter. When I think of Spring lighting, I think of a warm light that the Earth will want to absorb, or a light that invites life. I find this to be the opposite if the lighting I associate with Winter, which is almost like a light that is being reflected off of the Earth, not giving life at all, but almost taking it away. The warm light that reflects pink from the clouds captures Spring perfectly, and as the Sun is setting it almost looks like the flowers are leaning towards it as if to get as much life as possible out of that light until it greets them again at sunrise.

Theme: Spring

Description: I chose this picture because I really like the white lighting. Spring has never really felt like a particularly warm season, so I like that it’s not much of a warm light. It’s always felt like the cool, blue tones of winter fading into the warmer, more yellowish tones of summer, so this light is the happy medium. The white light combined with the pink of the trees looks like new beginnings and fresh starts. I also like the way that the trees close to the camera don’t look like they’ve got all their blossoms yet, so it’s really clear that it’s the season of growth

Theme: Advertisement/Desire

Description: I chose this picture for two reasons. One was because I thought it was interesting and effective how bright the lights were against the dark night background as I feel that helped the advertisement even more. The other reason I chose it was because I thought it was interesting that based on where the lights were placed, the angles, and the strength of the beams, a slight hourglass effect takes place as it is brighter right where the lights are but it fades towards the center and the edges. I chose to exaggerate that effect in my lighting design.

Advertisement/Desire Picture

  1. Gummy Bear ad found through Google.
  2. Theme: Advertisement/Desire
  3. I chose this ad because I found that the way the light is hitting the gummy bear and causing it to have that type of shadow makes the ad more desirable. The shadows help to fill in the negative space so the bears are all fitting into a line. I also found that because of the light, the middle gummy bear has a slight sparkle to it, which helps to illicit desire and make you want to consume the product.

Advertisement/Desire

  1. Attributes: This is a picture from a KitKat ad
  2. Theme: Advertisement/Desire
  3. Description: I really like this add partially because I really love KitKats. I also really like how the lighting is really simple (just some white light from the side), but it’s super effective in highlighting the detail of the chocolate which, because we already know how good KitKats are, makes it look really appealing

  2. Description: A model stands in front of a yellow background he is almost equally lit from all angles though slightly less intensity coming from stage left as there is a shadow on the left side of his face as well as behind him.

  2. THEME: Advertisement/Desire
  3. DESCRIPTION: This is a Glossier advertisement in a subway station. I like how the lighting is very grim and grungy, and the juxtaposition of the makeup ad against it. The bright pink lips of the models in the advertisement stand out against the otherwise pretty bland color palette of the rest of the photo. I also appreciate the asymmetry of the photo- that the most “exciting” part (where the color is) is off centered and small in ratio to the whole image.

Theme: St. Patrick’s Day

Description: I chose this image because I found it interesting that there is lighting both from below and above yet the subject is so large that there is still a dark band around the center. I also really like how cool the green light is and how it’s more on the blue side. To me, this makes me think of those pictures of ships at the bottom of the sea that are being excavated or photographed which adds an eerie and forgotten nature to the photo.

Photo Observation – Saint Patrick’s Day

  1. ATTRIBUTES: depositphotos.com
  2. THEME: Saint Patrick’s Day
  3. DESCRIPTION: InsideĀ  an Irish pub, focus on the green lights. I like the atmosphere, and the green, of course reminds me of Saint Patricks day. I like how the light of the bottle case pop up in the background, despite being blurry. If looking at this out of context, because of the lighting and atmosphere, I would assume it is Saint Patrick’s Day.
