Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.123rf.com/photo_61406391_a-3d-render-of-a-stage-lit-by-a-single-spotlight-on-a-dark-background.html?vti=mfmxkfilboy0u613ju-1-3
  2. Theme: Single Artificial Light Source
  3. Description: While this image is quite plain, it reminds me of dancing in the Black Box Theater very much. The blackness displays a prominent contrast to the singular white light illuminating from the center of the stage. Moreover, the simplicity and deficit of colors augment the melodrama of the stage. The fog also adds to the “mysterious” or “eerie” mood of the space. Although this lighting does not seem like much at first glance, if I were in the audience I would be thinking to myself “what is gonna happen?” or “who is going to appear?”

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Central Park Dec 7, 2021 4:58pm
  2. THEME: Night Life
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo both because behind me, everything was completely dark. Visually, it just as easily could have been 10pm but in this area of the park, the sky is fully visible and you can see the last of the sunset colors in the bottom corner in the clouds. The lights from the skyscrapers are reflecting off of the dark water. The lighting lends itself to depicting an idea of nightlife while also still having a lot of natural light. I think lighting a stage while trying to create a night time scene seems very tricky because in theory you are looking for ways to implement darkness while still making sure the actors, dancers, etc. are visible to the audience.

Night Life Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.grubstreet.com/bestofnewyork/after-hours-parties-nyc.html
  2. Theme: Night Life
  3. Description: When I hear the term “night life,” my mind instantly jumps to images of dance clubs, late trips to the city, and going out with friends. In college in particular, the night is tied to the idea of “partying” or socializing. In this photo, you will see a large group of people crowded into a small place with different colored lights and a slight haze to the room. Generally, different colored lights and fog are used to excite party-goers and make the atmosphere appear more fun. While the lights simply look “cooler” than if they were basic white lights, I think this image does a great job of showing how it may also be slightly disorienting if someone were to actually be in this space.

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTES: This photo was taken in my window on Feb 15th at 5:06pm
  2. THEME: Romance
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because I love the soft glow coming through the blinds, brightening the walls and the copper ring around the mirror, illuminating the leaves, displaying the range of colors on the branches. The pots are warm and earthy as the sun lights them from behind the camera. The lighting in this setting is inviting and idyllic.

Photo Observation #6

My friend took this photo of my sister and I at the Museum of Ice Cream in Soho Manhattan this past January.

 THEME: Advertisement/Desire

DESCRIPTION: This photo perfectly captures the idea of advertisement/desire, as the multiple vibrant neon rings create an enticing tunnel of wonderment and whimsicality. The lighting created in the photo draws the viewer into the world of the Museum of Ice cream, and makes the viewer eager to go explore the tasteful and colorful world that beholds them at the end of the tunnel.

Shadow

Attribute: I took this photo on my phone during winter break

Theme: Shadow

Description: I was riding a camel at the pyramid complex in Egypt over winter break. I thought the silhouette of the camel and I against the sand was interesting.
