Light Photo Observation Four Seasons Eve

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont:

For all of the seasons I chose a dark background because I was focusing on kind of a dark theme behind what we see. This one was one of my favorite ones. Fall is full of orange, red, and yellow and at the same time there is this concept of loss (because all of the trees are losing leafs), which is why I kept the space dark.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

I came up with this idea of seeing the sunrise through a window, which gives kind of a scary feeling and goes with the theme of Gothic. I love architecture and I have been in many Gothic Cathedrals in Prague and Belgium and some of them had windows with curtains like that so I thought I could do something with the lights and the effects.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

Coming from a Southern country, where it is hot 24/7, people tend to forget about what is around and only focus on the main brightness that comes from the sun. However, noon in a warm country full of brightness and warmth is always the best time of all the different colors from the flowers and grass to be seen because they look beautiful. This is just a reflexion of the different colors I usually see in my backyard in noon.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

When it comes to a snow storm, I always think about the accumulation of water that becomes ice that the clouds do, which is why I chose blue and everything is concentrated in the middle and that everything is about to go all out.

Four Seasons Lighting

1. A Fall Sunset In Vermont – For this lighting, I wanted to get the lighting from one direction since the sun was setting, so I put it on the SR side. I used three different colors for the orangey light to get some variation. I also added in some blue light since I noticed that in a lot of sunsets, there’s a decent amount of blue light present as well as the orange. The cyc is a deeper orange-red color to give an idea of the fall leaves

2. An Easter Sunrise In A Gothic cathedral – I also wanted to incorporate the single direction of light into this design, but I was also thinking about how the light is warped and changed when it goes through stained glass windows. For these lights, I used a lot of different colors of light through a gobo to get a sort of marbled or stained glass effect. Then, I used a window gobo to make it seem like the light was coming in a window. I also wanted to incorporate the inside lighting of the cathedral itself, so there’s some white-ish, grayish lighting up high and on the cyc

3. Noon On A Hot Summer Day In The Caribbean – For this lighting, I did several lights (warmer white) all focused on the person to get the bright, sunny effect. Then, I did some wider beams to get the effect of sand and warmth. I also used blue lights from downstage and on the cyc to give the effect of a bright blue sky

4. Winter Afternoon Just Before The Snow – On this scene, I wanted to get across that the sun is blocked by clouds, so to achieve this effect I tried two things. First, I put a gobo on most of the lights that reach the floor to indicate that the light is broken up by the clouds. This also creates an effect that looks fairly snowy. I also used really wide beams to spread this effect as far as I could. To make the stage look cold, I used blue lights on the person themself and on the cyc

Four Seasons Lighting Project

1. A Fall Sunset in Vermont: For this scene I decided to have a yellow light at the center of the stage concentrated on the subject. I then layered on two dimmer orange lights in order to create the effect of the sun’s rays as they shift from yellow to orange. I then added four very dim purple lights in order to capture the affect of when the sunset turns the sky purple. I used a soft focus as well in order to capture the warm feeling of a sunset.

2. Easter in a Gothic Cathedral: For this scene I decided to use pink, purple and yellow colors, which are colors that I often associate with Easter. I used the spotted gobo in order to create a patterned appearance on the subject. I thought that this created both the affect of light shining through stained glass as well as the patterns you would see on Easter eggs. Finally I used two green lights with the spotted gobo as well in order to create the feeling of grass.

3. Noon on a Hot Summer Day in the Caribbean: For this scene I decided to have five yellow spots set to soft focus all beaming down directly on the subject. This created the affect of a sun beaming down on someone. I then added two blue lights dimmed to 50% and set to spotted at medium focus in order to created the affect of the ocean waves on a beach.

4. Winter Afternoon Just Before Snow: For this scene I started with a single overhead spotlight with no color to highlight the subject. I then used six different spots with blue and purple and various patterns in order to create the affect of a gloomy day with clouds overhead, when the flurries of snow just begin to fall but it’s not quite snowing yet.

4 Seasons Light Lab

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

In this scene I used an orange, red, amber, and colorless sidelight to create the effect of the sun setting. I used a variety of colors in order to make the sunset seem more vibrant. I used the window gobo to create the feeling that the character on stage is watching the sunset from inside their house, and the sunset is flooding the room from the single window. I also included a colorless top light to give more dimension to the character on stage without messing up the shadowing. The cyc is also orange so as to give off the effect of the sunset filling the entire room.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

For this situation, I imagined a large church with colored glass windows. I wanted the entire room filled with light to create a feeling of rebirth and life, which lends itself to the idea of Spring and sunrise. I used mainly  light blue and light pink colored lights because I felt that these colors would be present in stained glass windows, and the soft nature of the colors lended themselves to Easter. The blue and pink lights are both used as top and side lights to create the effect of multiple windows. Once again, there are top colorless lights to give the character more definition. In addition, any light that comes in through an open door would be colorless, so it makes sense that there would not just be colored lights.

3) Winter afternoon just before the snow

When I thought of winter right before the snow, I imagined it to be gloomy and overcast. So, I used multiple top lights with a gray gel to give the gloomy feeling. I then added top lights with blue and violet gels to give off the cold feeling. I did not add any gobos because the snow is not falling yet. Overall, I wanted the lights to feel extremely heavy on the character, and the exclusive use of top lights does this because it creates an almost pressing down sensation on the character.

4) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

I kept this design much more minimalistic in hopes of giving an isolated feeling. This summer day is on a deserted island in the Caribbean. Thus, I wanted a strong yellow light shining directly down onto the character to create the sensation of a drowning heat. There is a limited use of color because I want the stage itself to seem dry. There are also side and top colorless lights to create a sensation of depth within the space as a whole, but they are dimmer so as to not create another distinct source of light for the stage. I included blue top lights and a cyc to create the sensation of a tropical sky and to balance out the strong yellow of the top light.

Four Seasons: Virtual Light Lab Project

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont:

I chose to use an amber backlight from both upstage corners. I also used three lights with a dotted gobo, I used a golden color because the of the time of year and the time of day. I thought these spots looked like leaves. I looked up pictures of Vermont sunsets and theres lots of trees, so I places the lighting instruments at three of the top corners because I wanted them to be stretched across the majority of the stage to emulate the trees/nature. I also used one more light to light the actor from above. I felt that this was necessary to continue the glow of the sunset.

2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

I chose to use the window gobo (4 lights) to present something looking similar to stained glass windows behind the actor. I chose purple and yellow to tie into the Easter sunrise. I also left the lights a bit dim since its sunrise. I chose to have two side lights and one top light lighting the actor with a yellow-ish color.

The front of the actor is lit because the sun in coming up through the windows in front of them so the reflection of the stained glass is also refracted behind the actor.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

I chose to use lights only on the right side to emulate where I thought the sun would be at this time of day. I have 6 lights all lighting up different sizes of rings in different shades of yellow. I wanted the middle to be the most saturated yellow color so that it felt like a magnifying glass starting a fire. I lit the cyc with a cooler tone on the top and a warmer tone on the bottom. I wanted the top to be lit but not blend in to all the yellow I already had lit. I also had one more light down stage right that I used to light the actors body/face a little better.

4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

I chose to use a lot of cool tones, mostly blue, for this scene. I used the spotted gobo again (3 lights) to try and create a stormy affect. I wanted it to look like shadows of clouds or snow flakes falling. I chose to keep it pretty dimly lit because I always imagine winter as very sad and dark, even though this takes place in the afternoon. I using one top light and to sides to create a blue color on the actor. I wanted it to feel ominous of a big snow storm so I gave the top light a sharper focus and softened the gobos so that the actor appears to be alone.

Virtual Light Lab
