Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION:  This past Wednesday, the 17th, and the bottom of my stairs around 9PM.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The lighting moment I captured was directly on the wall at the bottom of the stairs. All the lights were off, and the light was a reflection from the moon through the window. Tree branches appear as a shadow from the light.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Typically, I run up the stairs when it is completely dark because I am still convinced a monster could chase me to my room. However, right before I started running, I noticed a gloomy light peaking through a window onto the stairs. My fear then shifted into being mesmerized by the magic of the moonlight. The moonlight created a silhouette of the tree branches that were moving from a gust of wind.  I was so mesmerized by this square of light because it created a picture that was not originally there. Normally, when I run up the stairs, I just see a black wall. But on that very night, I imagined a background setting from a movie my dad used to make me watch all the time, Dracula. Ironically, the reflection was not scary, even though it reminded me of Dracula, but the feeling of comfort ran through me. That night, I walked up the stairs.

Lighting Observation

DATE-TIME-LOCATION:  February 17th, Somewhere on Stewart Avenue, 5:33 pm

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Bright sunlight coming through the car window.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun setting in the distance protrudes my car window as I drive home from work. It burns my eyes making it hard to see, will I crash my car today? I hope not. I put my visor down and can finally see once more. The sunset ahead is captivating. I drive towards it until it fades away.

This photo is from Facebook of Philadelphia

THEME: Romance

DESCRIPTION: Soft blurred street lights line the street leading towards the skyline. The skies dull blue mingles with the slightest hue of pink. Everything is calm and seemingly quiet in the moment.

Light Observation #2

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: 2/14/2021 – 1:00 pm – Rivaaz, Indian restaurant in Pequannock, NJ

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light is leaking through the curtain, providing a slim amount of natural light. It is a huge difference from the bright, cool lighting reflecting off the snow from the outside. The white light from the fixtures in the restaurant is bright for 1 pm on Valentine’s Day, but the warmer than the light outside, highlighting the yellow walls and orange tables.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The crisp winter air pushes you through the door, allowing warmer lighting to warm you. As soon as I walked in, I felt comfortable, despite the entryway being physically almost the same temperature as the outside. There was not a huge gust of heated air, but the warmth of artificial light was enough to warm up to. The light provided a homey feeling after surviving the winter cold and the blinding, reflected light from the outdoors.

Lighting Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: February 16th, 2021; 3:40 pm; Davidson Hall Rm 104
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun is shining through the windows. The room is lit enough with natural light.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I sit in the barren classroom, a ray of light shines down from the windows onto empty seats. The gorgeous blue sky makes me wish I was not sitting in this plain white box. However, seeing the sunlight shining on the floor warms the room and makes it more inviting. There is some shadow in the room, but no need for the harshness of ceiling lights. The gentleness of the Sun is quite astonishing.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: February 18th 2021, 10:21PM, on the second floor of the Student Center.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The tiny spot lights directly above Starbucks in the Student Center.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The tiny lights emit a warm, welcoming, bright light that illuminates the menu and tasty treats behind the Starbucks counter. The pleasant vibe given off by the lights invite you to stay and enjoy a warm coffee. The spotlight look of the lights gives the establishment a professional and performative feel.

2) This was a photo I took in Paris round 8PM

3) Romance

4) The Eiffel tower is a grand monument itself, but when you see the glowing tower at night, your perception of night turns into a feeling of lust. When the sun comes down, the tower begins to travel across the water, allowing every audience to see its glory. Every thirty minutes, twinkling lights appear, reminding myself that there is magic and love in the city of pairs. This kind of romance may be recognized with a partner, but from the photo I took, I was in love with the night, the atmosphere, and the smell of baguettes.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/17/21- 9 pm, Hofstra Intramural Fields

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The back corner of the field had some light from one of the small lamps, so that is where the ultimate frisbee team gathered on this day in order to play.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The only light on the fields shining down from the small lamp posts on the outskirts of the fields. Humans crowded on the nearby hill surrounding the small flood of white light. Their shadows mix with the soft edged darkness surrounding their dimly lit playing field. The steam coming off their bodies from their heat and breath floating upwards. Some figures stand far off to the side in order to toss the disc back and forth. To passing cars and persons, they all look like ghosts hiding in the shade.

Lighting Observation

WHEN? February 16th, 8:00pm

WHERE? My living room

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A lamp in my living room

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The warm light leaks through the ivory shade into a darkened room, dimly illuminating the space. Circles of light and shadow, reshaped by the lampshade over top, are now projected onto the walls in the corner of the room where the little lamp sits.

THEME: Romance

DSCRIPTION: Under a tree there is a bench, illuminated in the dark night by warm orbs of light that seemingly float above. How many lives must be shared sitting side by side on this little bench.
