Lighting Observation #4

1.) February 21, 2025 – 2:39 pm – New York Public Library

2.) At the end of a long, stone hallway, there is an arched window that spans all the way from the floor to the ceiling.

3.) The high, dark ceilings in the otherwise narrow hallway give it a looming and chasm-ish feel. The dim lights hanging from above have no effect, as they are entirely wiped out by the brilliant sunlight that floods in through the vast and gaping window. The rays of sunlight reflect off of the walls and floor, beaming through the room with an overwhelmingly intense radiance. The sheer quantity of light attacking me from all sides overpowered my senses and actually made seeing in the otherwise dim building much, much harder. Blinded by the heavenly overflow of light, the easiest part of the room to focus on was actually the dark ceiling, which absorbed the light, creating a matte and gentle shelter of protection.
