Photo Observation #4

2.) A photograph by Matthew Murphy for the musical “35mm: A Musical Exhibition”

3.) Bizarre

4.) While the subject of the photo is already arguably very bizarre, I feel that it is the lighting in this photo that really takes it to the next level. The vignette around the edge of the photo makes it seem like the room is dark except for the single spot light hitting the center, creating an ominous and threatening atmosphere. This light is clearly also coming from the side, as it half of the deer head and body are in shadow, and the shadow against the wall is also at a side angle. This creates a shadow puppet-like effect, and gives the image an extra layer of depth, evoking a much stronger emotion than if there was no shadow. The extreme contrasts between the highlights and shadows in the photo make the image disconcerting to look at. It makes me wonder what the story behind the image is. Most interestingly to me, it seems as though there is a slightly brighter light outlining the subject, which is most clearly seen on the hand. I wonder if that is an effect of the editing or how they got the light to do that?
