5th Lighting Observation

  1. March 4th, 2026 – 2:14 pm – Campus Sidewalk (by Shapiro)
  2. While walking home from work, I noticed the way the sunlight filtered through the trees overhead and landed on the snow and pavement on the sidewalk. The branches broke up the direct light, causing it to make patches on the ground.
  3. The space between the branches functioned like the cut-out pattern in a gobo, allowing light to pass through in specific shapes. The result was a textured pattern of sunlight, with some areas crisp and others more blurred depending on the height of the branches and the angle of the sun. It was a perfect natural example of how designers use gobos to add visual interest.
