Photo Observation #10

The colors of a fall sunset evoke a lot of oranges and reds. The leaves create this effect for the dying season of summer and warm colors. Especially in the northern regions of Vermont, the coldness of the air combining with the warmth of the fading summer colors creates an interesting lighting challenge. I hoped to achieve this with the hue of yellow that I picked and the background swelling sun as it leaves for the night.

A spring sunrise in a gothic cathedral brings an earthy but bright tone. It is framed by the lines of the window and it is pale with the feelings of beginning. This also makes for other details with extra vibrant colors coming through the stained glass.

Noon on a hot summer day especially in Hawaii feels like pure brightness. The heat is scalding and the sun is at its peak coming right down on its subjects. There have been many photos in recent years showing the lack of shadows in midday Hawaii because of the sun’s brightness and unique angle. I tried to achieve this lack of shadows but couldn’t quite get it right while still maintaining a single light source to represent the sun. I added the leaves to add the feeling of the palm trees blowing in the sky being broken up by the beaming sun light.

Winter afternoons in Chicago have the cold hollowness of any other cold area but with the pressure of the strong winds beating on the people. I also see Chicago as carrying a uniquely professional, corporate energy with towering buildings which the wind weaves through. I sought to capture this with the lines backdropping the portrait.
