3. Sunrise/Sunset

4. This photo shows a sunset with lots of purple light. I really enjoy the contrast between the yellow, orange and purple. The symmetry of the photo really helps with the lighting to make it a really peaceful picture to look at.

A Streak in the Dark Sunset

  1. Time/Location: February 1, 2017, 5:20 pm at the Hofstra Fitness Center
  2. Objective: As the sun was almost down and becoming a black violet, a streak of Indian red could be seen brushing across the sky.
  3. Subjective: To me, this particular sunset represents the ending of a life. When I was looking at this sunset, I was thinking about my senior film I would be shooting involves themes of mortality and regret. The streak in the sky almost attempts to break through the night, wanting to continue living on. However, it is clear that night will come and blot out the leak that has appeared. In this sunset, this crack in the night represented the resistance to the end of February 1, 2017.

Sunset Aesthetic

2. source: Emily Bausher’s roommate’s window

3. Sunrise/sunset

4. The sunset itself drew feelings reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting. The colors are two that are not typically seen together in artists’ works, but are visually compelling when seen in a sunset. The cumulonimbus clouds have the same aesthetic as the works of Monet and the impressionist era.

3. Sunset/Sunrise

4. The positioning of the bird’s nest frames the sun to enhance the sunrise. The colors of the sky caused by the sun combined with the birds making their nest remind me of spring and give the impression of warmth.  The way the plant below and next to the nest appear to be blowing in the wind.  The overall sense of the photo is warmth near the coast.

Light Observation 1

  1.  1/31/2017 2:00 AM My Bed, Hague House, Hofstra University
  2. A thin horizontal strip of blue light at the top of the wall farthest from me and blocks of white light that traveled against the wall when cars would pass by.
  3. The way the light looked blue on the wall with the constant passage of light scrolling through my room was mesmerizing. The cars seemed to pass by in a smooth rhythm and the light reminded me of counting sheep. Focusing on the light lulled me to sleep as the combination of the light’s color and rhythmic movement was incredibly calming.

Light Observation 1

  1. 2/2/17 – 5:00pm – Netherlands Unispan (aka Nethiespan)
  2. The light in the unispan is a really creepy orange color. Its in what could be sets of 2 lights as you walk the length of it, with about 3 feet of darkness between each set of lights.
  3. As I was walking back to my dorm alone after dropping something off for my friend in the LHSC, I noticed how eerie the lighting in the Nethiespan is when there’s literally no one else with you. It was like I’d walked into a door in a horror movie that makes the audience scream at the TV and throw their popcorn. The farther I walked along the unispan, the more I found myself walking faster and faster away from something that I knew wasn’t actually there, but couldn’t seem to escape either.

light observation

January 31st, 1 pm, the quad in front of Emily Lowe

The weather is overcast and snowing, everything is grey and cold. There is a break in the clouds just above Adam’s. The light only hits the far side of the Quad.

It had started snowing again, the snow was unwelcome and cold. I was walking back to Lowe on an overcast afternoon. The quad was empty and there was not snow in the middle, where the geese huddle in the winter. A shaft of light slipped through the clouds just above Adam’s illuminating the trees on the far side of the Quad. The snow was going in two different directions, counteracting each other and stopping time. It was one moment frozen in time, then the clouds moved and other people appeared. It had all been so quiet, I walked away thinking maybe the snow wasn’t so bad after all.

Light Observation #1

  1. January 30th, 2017 – Bill of Rights Residence Hall
  2. The sunset is reflecting off of one of the towers at hofstra university, creating a beautiful yellow/orange glow
  3. I was walking out of the student center and I was seeing the sun cast this beautiful orange, almost golden, glow and it really caught my eye. I was just staring at this beautiful moment and wondered if anyone else was seeing this because no one else had stopped to look.

sunrise/sunset

  1. Taken by me, August 15, 2016
  2. Sunrise/Sunset
  3. The sun had set over the lake and left a streak of bright yellows and oranges across the blue and purple sky. It was such a beautiful end to the day and i couldn’t believe how many colors were appearing and changing in front of me.

Sunrise

Photo credit to Michael Dinneen Photography, Anchorage, Alaska.

Theme: Sunrise/set

This photo is a sunrise over Alaska. The mist over the water is mixed with the smoke of a near by forest fire. The plane is going back to the fire, with all the potential of a new day and the beauty of this photo there is a lingering feeling that it is more a continuation of the previous night for the person in the plane.
