Light Observation

Time: 11:45 pm Thursday, my room

Objective Description: My room was lit only by the string lights on my bed posts and the dim lights from the lamps outside.

Subjective Description: I had turned off the overhead light in my room, and slowly my eyes adjusted to the darkness, only to find it wasn’t darkness at all. I left the blinds open, so a small amount of light from the lampposts and the occasional car driving by outside lit my room up just enough. The light shining through my window lit up the back wall with blurry spots of gentle, yellow light. That paired with the tiny fairy string lights on my bed posts made the room look very cozy and almost magical. It was nice to end the night on a positive note, sitting quietly in the peace of the semidarkness.

Friday, March 11th 2016, 1:30am, Student Center

Objective: The mixture of cool fluorescent light on the walls and in some of the ceiling light fixtures, mixed with the few miscellaneous warm lights give the space an unharmonious feeling.

Subjective: The lighting in the student center is always a little bit off, but this especially shows in the darkest times of night. There is a mixture between very warm and very cool lighting fixtures, making the space feel off balance.

One light, Artificial

From: Online

Theme: Single source, artificial light

Description: While looking through pictures, at first glance I dismissed this photo because I originally thought it was just a drawing of a shadow. But then, I was intrigued by how the colors of the balloon was so vibrant. To which after I clicked and zoomed in the photo I noticed it was a woman standing after seeing the shadows under her feet. I found it so interesting how after learning how to use light to increase the plasticity of actors, the lighting in this photo did the opposite and gave the appearance of being completely flat.

Description: This is a photo I took at the Dia:Beacon Art Gallery over Winter break, where there were multiple exhibits featuring different aspects of light. This was one of my favorites by artist Dan Flavin, which featured neon light in different colors, shapes, and sizes. This piece featured many white neon circles stacked almost like a staircase and created an interesting silhouette when my friend Sage stood in front of it.

Theme: Single-source

Description: This picture is lit from the bottom, creating an eerie effect. Bottom lighting is highly unnatural, as it lights up and casts shadows on parts of the face that are opposite that of what we see in everyday life. Something about bottom light makes this man look almost inhuman.

One of my favorite things about this photo is that you can see the shadow of this man’s eyelashes and they look so long that it almost looks like he’s wearing fake eyelashes. That doesn’t really add to the creepiness, but it’s a bit of a funny observation.

Ghost Light – Tia

Theme: Artificial light, single source

Description: This is just a plain spotlight shining down on this individual from above. The spotlight appears to be coming from only one source and gives a feel of importance to the actor onstage because all of the attention is on him.

Light Observation

Date: 3-9-16  Time: 6:15  Location: Campus

Objective Description: Walking around campus with my friend because it was beautiful out. The sunset was beautiful with an array of colors and it just made the day that much more beautiful.

Subjective Description: I took a walk with my friend, Meagan and we decided to get dinner then take a walk because we wanted to take advantage of the weather. As we were walking to Monroe to sing some show tunes, you couldn’t help but look at the colors that were in the sky due to the sun setting. It was beautiful and stopped us in our tracks. It made the night that much better and then we went to Dunkin’ talking more about what we witnessed before.

This picture stood out to me because this lamp creates a pool of light. It is a room full of darkness and this lamp shine son this mans head which then illuminates some of the room. This photo fascinates me due to its black and white qualities. It sets the mood for the emotions of this man.

Lighting Observation 7

Date: 3/11/2016 Time: 9:15 p.m. Location: in my dorm

Objective Description: All of the lights in my room are out except for my Christmas lights. They are “icicle” lights so little strands of lights hand off of the main strand. There are also glittery, mini ornaments hanging on the lights.

Subjective Description: The mini bulbs reflect off of my pale yellow wall and it looks like each bulb is glowing. They are also hanging at all different lengths and do not really have a rhyme or reason to where they hang. This along with their individual, mini glows makes them look like stars in the sky. The small ornaments hanging off of the lights also make a cool effect on the wall. Because the ornaments were glitter, each individual speck of glitter reflected the light in its own way. The ornaments hanging on the strand of lights looked like mini disco balls and made the lighting feel fun just off of their reflections.

Rem3

Photo Credit: me, this was taken last year in my high school photography class

Theme: single source, artificial light

Description: This is a photo of my classmate, Tiana. I just love this photo because I think it captures her personality perfectly. She is the type of person who is always on top of things and knows she’s great, which I think her expression shows. I also love how dramatic and timeless this photo feels. With her face showing every shade of light, from almost white, to complete black makes the photo feel intense. Also the photo feels very vintage because of the black and white, but also very modern based off of her pose and clothing. I am also very fond of the contrast not only in her face from the shadows, but how her clothing contrasts as well and is enhanced through the black and white filter.
