Lighting Observation

1) 8:35, March 29th, Outside mall in Maryland

2) Kitty playing with floor light

3) The path was being lit by those circular floor lights. There was a grey cat playing with the bright white light, and the light seemed to be playing back. There was an orchestrated dance between the cat and the lighting, and the audience was made of shadows.

Lighting Observation

1. Saturday, April 29, around 2pm

2. It was raining all day so the light outside was very overcast and grey.

3. I just happened to look outside my window because I’d noticed the light in my room hadn’t changed all day, and it was like time stopped. If I hadn’t looked at the clock, it could’ve been any time of day outside. The rain was falling and everything was just… there. It was overcast, so there was light from the sun, but the sun was nowhere to be found and all of the golden hue that’s usually present from its rays were gone, replaced by a flat grey light. It was an odd sensation, this feeling of timelessness, and even beauty. Even though it wasn’t the typical wonderful sunny afternoon, this sort of gloom didn’t feel at all gloomy. It felt more like a murky peace, or like that place between sleep and awake.

3. Single artificial light source

4. This lighting effect is done with a single light source from the ground. This picture really shows how much effect a single light can have on an image and on the mind. With just one light specifically placed, this went from what could’ve been a flat looking image of a handsome young man standing, to a menacing dark and frightening picture. The high contrast adds a lot of mystery, which makes you feel uncertain, making you wonder if this person who seems nice is really actually stable. If the lighting were placed from above, there would have been an entirely different feel to this image.

3. Single artificial light source

4. This picture is one that has become iconic to my generation. In the past a single artificial light source was a soft candle.  However, now possibly the most common single artificial light source would have to be a laptop screen.  The proximity of the laptop to our faces creates a real hard white light and can be very damaging to our eyes but we still do it anyway.

Lighting Observation #9

1. 3/31/14, Lowe 106, 6:50

2. Fluorescent lit inside and the sun setting outside the window.

3. Inside room 106 was the bright assaulting light provided by fluorescent lights.  It gave the walls a very yellow tint and the blue floor a greenish tint.  However, outside the window the sun was finally setting and there was the brief moment in time where everything was visible but had a very soft blue color.  As the time progressed the street lights turned on and put a little orange highlight on the cars. There was a huge contrast of lighting inside the room and out.

3) Single Artificial Light Source

4) This beautiful chandelier adds so much dimension to the photo. The shadow barely creeping up from the left hand corner gives a contrast of what the room might look like without the light source. The intensity of the light does a great job of showcasing the dimensions, colors, and textures of all the different types of surfaces in the photo. The overall feeling I got from this was a sense of elegancy.

Lighting Observation – Max Cerci

1) April 2 2014 In my Room

2) The light on the ceiling in my room.

3) Something had been left in the panelling of the light causing burnt marks to appear. These burnt marks when looking at the light resembled nothing in particular however, when looking at the floor a clear shadow in the shape of a smiley face seemed to look up at me. I found it both creepy and kind of cool the way objects can look one way and their shadows can represent something completely different.

Single Artificial Light Source

The single light coming from behind this cat illuminates each whisker and hair. The light reflects in his eyes and highlights the contours and shapes of his face.

Light Observation #9

1. April 1, 2014   12:45 PM Outside Roosevelt Hall

2. Light filtering through branches onto cobblestone plaza

3. The intertwining patterns created from the tree hanging above me were mesmerizing as the wind softly shook the branches. The sun shone brightly, making a stark difference between the the distinct pattern of bare limbs with budding leaves and the hot sun that promised spring was on the way.

3) Single Artificial Light Source

4) The lonely bulb, left alone in its socket, is the only light in this image. Even though it is all alone, it still tries its hardest to push out whatever light it has left. The harsh white light given off by the bulb appears to be almost ghostly, as the beams flicker and reflect off of the cold warm glass of the bulb. It casts its light upward, and the light appears on the ceiling above the bulb. Although, not natural, this light seems to be bursting with emotions, as expressed by the light it is giving off.
