Lighting Observation

Where: California by a pond

When: Friday afternoono

Objective: There was a light under the water shining up at the surface of this pond.

Subjective: I have always loved this affect. The light in the water gives a peaceful yet intriguing feel as the water is peaceful, but you cannot fully see what lies below the surface.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 7:50 PM on Thursday, April 28th, in CV Starr

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Looking out the large glass back of CV Starr Hall, the sun is setting and the orange light is bouncing against the clouds, while the sky behind them remains a bright blue. There are further clouds even lower than the orange clouds, which are a dark bluish gray. They are traveling very fast.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The ceiling of the world feels outrageously high. The multiple layers of light seem mystical in a way, especially since the darker clouds seem to be traveling at a much faster pace than the orange ones. The blue sky seems to be strangled by the darker clouds, but complimented by the orange ones.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Sunday night, 11 PM on i-95 toward Boston

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Through heavy rainfall, the clouds have separated to reveal the moon, which is sending beams of light through the rain and reflecting off of my dashboard and the wet roads. It is very dark other than this light.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The clouds seem to have rolled back and out of the moonlight’s way, and are now sending a beam of white light through the murky skies to my car. Though it is very dark around me, it feels as though a spotlight has come out to follow my car down the road.

Large pic.

1)

2) I found this photo through a google search on http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.earthinpictures.com/world/usa/washington,_d.c./jefferson_memorial_at_night.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.earthinpictures.com/world/usa/washington,_d.c./jefferson_memorial_at_night.html&usg=__MUwdhscgbnSue0II34vqrcrwnD8=&h=480&w=640&sz=45&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=mCbQwPZ5YFnfxM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=186&ei=lnO4TeP0N4fy0gH145XXCA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwashington%2Bmonuments%2Bat%2Bnight%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1213%26bih%3D591%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=769&page=1&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0&tx=177&ty=109

3) Theme: large

4) I chose this picture because I thought the light shinning onto the water in front of the Jefferson memorial looked “large.” The building itself is large but usually reflections are smaller scale than what they are reflecting. In this case though the light is so bright and since it was taken at night the light was able to be seen and seen in a larger scale being reflected onto the water. I feel like if I were to fold this picture up both the memorial and the reflection would be the same size. I also really like how large and regal the memorial looks in this picture especially up against the black darkness of the night.

2nd lighting observation

1) April 26th – 10p.m – on the sidewalk of Hempstead turnpike: I had my 2nd lighting moment while looking through a fence onto Hempstead turnpike.

2) The light was seen through the open spaces of a neighborhood fence. Colors and the size of the lights from cars and the glowing lights from fast food joints across the road were skewed through the small open spaces.

3) The bright lights and from headlights of cars and the neon, unnatural light coming from across the street fast eatery’s were blurred and skewed through the fence that was in front of me. When I concentrated on looking through one time space everything on the other side of it appeared small and within itself. As opposed to taking in the fence and everything on the other side of it that made it big and bright. The cars where going by really fast and since it was dark out the light glowed especially bright. Colors were sharp in the darkness and I felt like I was in the city at one point being bombarded with unnatural, glowing light.

1st lighting observation

1) April 25th – 11:00 p.m – watching a movie in my dorm room. I was watching Jeppers Creepers on Monday night when I had my 1st lighting moment.

2) In the beginning of the movie there is a scene with a brother and sister driving in the country somewhere and they stop for a bathroom break and there’s a wide shot of the sky, and the car and the tree near where they stopped. The sky is pink, and purple. Layered over each other.

3) This shot was beautiful. It was calming and serene looking. It was as if the sky was a swirl of pink and purple ice cream. It looked soft and warm. Its interesting how the shot was taken because this is the very beginning of the movie and in the beginning its very light out and there are bright colors but as the movie continues it gets progressively darker and scarier.

Photo Observation Devin Gee

2) This is a picture I took while I was in the city about a year ago and it is of Rockefeller Center.

3) Theme: Large

4) The lighting in this picture depicts largeness because of the way is fades out.  The angle of the picture helps but it really comes down to the fact that the light fades as you go to the top of the picture and this creates the illusion that the building continues on and is really much larger than it appears.  This type of lighting makes the building look limitless and very large in size because we cant see the whole building so our minds have to fill in the rest and therefore it creates the idea that the building is much larger than it really is.

Light Observation 2 Devin Gee

1)   4/26/11- 8:30 pm- Outside Kate and Willys

2)   The sky was lit up very brightly with seemingly no source and it was a white colored light.

3)   This lighting moment was similar to one I had before except for one distinct difference and that being it is a white colored light.  This light lit up the whole sky and it seemed to have no source.  It reminded me of the light that you would see a stadium put off.  When you go to a baseball game or football game the lights are really really bright and they have a distinct white quality to them.  This light had a very similar quality and it really opened up the sky just like the lights in a stadium do.  The light felt really energetic and I think it is because that s what the kind of lighting in a stadium feels like too and it really just made me feel lively and want to be active and excited.  The light was also shining through mist so it gave it a cool shading and made it fade in and out at different spots in the sky.  It is very interesting that the white light gave off the feeling of cold especially with the mist too but in fact it really wasn’t a cold night.

Light Observation 1 Devin Gee

1)   4/23/11- between 4 to 6 pm- Church during a wedding in Stockton

2)   The lighting coming through the stain glass windows in the church.

3)   This lighting moment was a happy one.  The bright and colorful lighting that came through the stain glass windows of the church created a happy feeling.  Along with the fact that two people were getting married and the atmosphere was already in good spirits, the lighting complimented the feeling of joy and delight.  The light was very colorful and bright; the different colored glass acted like gels and created the whole rainbow of colors.  The brightness was also important in that it made everything feel open and airy.  The association of light through a stain glass window with a wedding and happiness is now in my head and it seems almost fantastical to me like it is a kind of lighting and feeling you would see in a movie or in dreams.  Now whenever I see light shining through a stain glass window I will automatically feel joy.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/12/2011, On the Quad

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There are pink flowers on the trees, and the sunny day has caused them to appear almost translucent, leaving little pink patterns on the ground. As people walk underneath, the flowers leave that pink pattern on them.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Because it is so bright, the scene feels very cheerful. The pink tones make the moment feel softer than the bright sun, but the whole scene screamed “spring” to me. As people pass underneath, it seems like I am viewing them through a kaleidoscope.
