“Power” Photo Observation

3) Power

4) This photo represents power because of the red glow the fire casts on to the tree.  The color is strong and allows the trees to stand out. Your able to see almost all of them individually instead of as a group which is more often in a forest. The light radiates throughout the picture.

Lighting Observation 8 B

1.) 3/24/11 – 5 pm – they sky outside my bedroom window

2.) Big fluffy clouds moving across the sky, shafts of light coming through

3.) This light is really awesome, there are giant dark grey clouds shrouding the sun but it’s so bright that the back and edges are white and silver. I’ve always heard the expression “silver lining” and known this is what is was referring to, but have never actually cared to look for it, but now I’m looking out my window and there it is! These clouds are modeled in the coolest way, the bottoms are dark but the tops are huge and fluffy almost as I would image Mount Olympus to look like in Greek mythology. What’s also really cool is that there are these breaks in the clouds where the sun breaks through in perfect beams, it’s so beautiful and happy, and definitely optimistic!

Lighting Observation 8 A

1.) 3/24/11 – 12:15 ish – outside Dempster, near Breslin

2.) Sunny light on a patch snow and daffodils

3.) This was the quintessential “Spring” moment for me, it was bright and sunny, a pale yellow morning/ spring hue beaming happily on tiny little daffodils smiling up at the light. And on the ground nearby was snow melting, dissipating in the soft warmth of midday sun. It was everything spring symbolizes to me in that moment, the softness of spring and new birth in that pale yellow light encouraging the life of the flower and overcoming the biting snow with its warm beams. It made me feel happy and warm. 🙂

Lighting Observation 7 B

1.) 3/14/11- 12:40 ish – NAB Dressing Room

2.) Natural light coming in from the window of the dressing room after make up class

3.) I was the last person to leave class and so had to turn off all the mirror lights, and it was really interesting because after I did so, the natural light that had been filling the room unnoticed looked so calm and peaceful. It was a huge distinction, a transition from the bright mirror lights that accompanied the boisterous class to a more subdued and serene light in the now empty space.

Photo Observation #7

Lightning

POWER

Lightning to me is immediately evocative of power, and not just for what it does, but for what it looks like. In this particular photo, the contrast with everything around it is what creates the feeling of power. The bolt is enormous and blindingly bright, immediately drawing focus and inspiring awe. In addition to the brightness, the unearthly purple-pink tint to the light makes it seem otherworldly. The light conveys power, and its presence makes everything around it look tiny and powerless by comparison.

Lighting Observation 7 A

1.) 3/17/11- 2:30 ish- Quad outside Lowe

2.) Sun casting shadows of tree branches onto the grass

3.) Standing outside of Lowe looking at the quad I had the coolest lighting moment, or rather lack of lighting moment! The angle of the sun coming down on the barren trees was such that the grass looked painted, the shadows didn’t look like shadows but rather that they were a part of the grass itself! Almost like a stained glass window… or should I say a stained grass window! Ok cheesy, but it was still really cool to see the trees perfectly depicted on the grass.

Lighting Observation #14

1.) Thursday Mar. 24th 2011, 12:00 A.M. Spiegel Theatre.

2.) A performer backlit in silhouette by the Alpha Psi gobo.

3.) In between acts during Cabaret the Alpha Psi Omega gobo illuminates the back wall of the Spiegel. After an act finished, the lights blacked out but for some reason the gobo came up immediately. The shift was sudden and very startling. The large Greek letters in white against the black wall were very powerful-looking, and there was enough light to provide the backlight necessary to put the actress still onstage in silhouette. It made her immediately imposing, which was unfortunate, considering the fact that she had just finished performing. It was a visceral experience.

Lighting Observation #13

1.) Wednesday Mar. 23 2011, 9:05 P.M. Outside Emily Lowe Hall.

2.) Light reflecting off the falling snow.

3.) It was nighttime, made even darker by the thunderclouds that were overhead, when I got out of my thesis team meeting. When we stepped outside, what limited light there was was reflecting off of the large snowflakes, making them the only clearly illuminated thing on the quad. The result was a blinding effect, a kind of white-out, in which it took me a long time to focus on the rest of my surroundings. The movement of the snowflakes was disorienting. Also, the orange-tinted street lights provided an orange fill light, making the snow look unnatural. The whole scene made me feel anxious.

2nd lighting observation

1) March 23rd – 8:30 p.m – Emily Lowe Hall: I had my second lighting moment tonight at rehearsal in Lowe.

2) The amber light that shown from the building of Lowe onto the freshly fallen snow/ slush that laid on the ground outside of Lowe.

3) As I looked out the window and through the blinds outside onto the common area right outside Lowe and saw the freshly fallen snow/sleet laid on the ground and the dim, amber beam of light that was hitting it I felt like I could see each individual speck of snow that was glistening on the ground. It looked fresh and like crystals or something. It was really very pretty. I was immediately taken back to holiday time and the festivities that it includes but then it hit me, It’s March! and the end of March at that! this should not be happening and I prayed to Mother Nature that this joke of hers would soon be over and the 60 degree weather soon return.

1st lighting observation

1) March 22nd – 4:00 p.m – Suffolk Lounge, 3rd floor: I had my first lighting moment today when I was working out in the lounge this afternoon.

2) The light came from the sun and shined through the window and blinds and onto the linolium floor where my water bottle was placed. The reflection of the sun against the water bottle made the colors yellow, blue and purple refract onto the linolieum floor.

3) As I was exercising, I noticed that my water bottle was making the floor in front of me different colors. The sun shown in through the blinds on the third floor. It made one inch lines of sunshine on the floor and where my water bottle was placed the sun hit it perfectly and refracted different colors onto the floor. When I looked at the water bottle I saw the source of the light in the water bottle was a bright yellow light. Similar to a small sun then the colors blue, green and a slight purple shown through the water bottle and onto the drab floor. The beams of light weren’t that long but they were enough that you could see them and make out the individual colors. It was a rainbow of color in a usually drab, white, sterile room. It was really cool to witness and so ironically placed for it to happen the way it did.
