Photo Observation, week 6

This image is from a site called Wallpaperbase.com, which, as the name might suggest, is a sight providing wallpaper for the computer.

So, happy theme.

Winter is a happy time – why? The shadows in this are how I know anything about the lighting – there’s nothing particularly special about the spots that aren’t shadowed over. Nonetheless, the juxtaposition of shadow to non-shadow highlights the snow. Somehow, I am more aware of the fact that the snow is totally undisturbed than I would be if the image were all in shadow or evenly lit. The effect is not solely responsible for the happy feeling of the photo, but largely facilitates it. It is rather that idea of undisturbed snow on a winter morning that is happy, and the lighting amplifies the image of undisturbed snow.

Lighting observation #1, week 6

Location: Drama Lounge, Thursday, March 10th, 9:13am.

Objective Description: Four florescent ceiling lights light the room.

Subjective Description: There’s a reason that florescent light is unexciting. The room is evenly lit – the only shadows are underneath furniture. There is nothing hidden, nothing to find or look for – nowhere that the lighting changes – it is only total illumination. There is an unnatural, manufactured, and slightly depressing feel to it.

2nd lighting observation

1) March 8th – 5:00 p.m – Suffolk Hall: As I was walking to my room on Tuesday evening I had my second lighting “moment.”

2) As I was walking back to my room I noticed the hallway and the shadows from the doors along the sides of the wall. The shadows produced perfect lines and you could see the fluorescent light get cast past it.

3) As I was walking back to my room on Tuesday evening I noticed the shadows down to the end of my hallway on the third floor. I guess i’d never really realized them or took the time to notice them before. But as I was heading to my door and when I got there I stopped and looked down the fluorescent lit hallway and noticed the gray shadows coming from each door. I felt like I was in a deserted hospital or something. It was rather eerie looking with the bright, annoying light of the fluorescent bulbs over head and then the dark, deep shadows that came from the doorways of each dorm room. The shadows were cast all the way into the hallway so that you could see each individual door. It felt like I was in a movie and behind each door something horrifying would jump out at me if I went in front of the shadow. I quickly noticed these shadows and turned and went right for my room key to let me into safety.

Light Observation 6B

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/6/11; 11:00AM; Student Center Atrium

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A blue light and and an amber light illuminating the Atrium

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There are several groups of blue and amber lights that are used to illuminate the Student Center Atrium throughout the day.  The mix of the blue and the amber provides simulated daylight.  It feels very natural because it is closer to real sunlight than one might be able to achieve by using just one light.  This mixing is very interesting and was a very intelligent design choice.

Light Observation 6A

DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/7/11; 4:15PM; First floor of New Academic Building

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Circular fluorescent light in stairwell to basement

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light lit up the orange walls that it was placed on.  It created warm amber light that illuminated the stairwell.  It created a sense of warmth because the amber-white light from the fluorescent reflected off of the amber wall creating more of a warm glow.

Photo Observation 6

ATTRIBUTION: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hyku/2167020538/

THEME: Happy

DESCRIPTION: This picture is of the finale of Wishes, a nightly fireworks show in Walt Disney World.  Fireworks most definitely give off a happy feeling whether it is on the Fourth of July, New Years or just any day during the year.  Fireworks are often associated with celebratory holidays throughout the year.  This picture was also taken place during the Christmas season, as the lights that sculpt Cinderella Castle twinkle throughout the night.

Photo Observation

2) I took this photo in Buchart Gardens in Canada.

3) Theme: Happy

4) I believe the lighting in this photo is happy.  I like the way the light shines from right to left and the light is of a clear and crisp quality.  The light is slightly yellow, which creates a happy feeling since yellow light can be associated with warmth and happiness.  The light in this picture is also bright and not dull, dark, grey or black.  With that in mind it seems to me as though The light in this picture actually brings out the color in the flowers and I believe that to be a happy quality.  I think happy light should bring out the best features compared to green light and dark light which would hide those features.  The light in this picture has a little bit, in my opinion, of a fantastical feel.  I mean to say that the light makes you feel as though your in a fantasy.  Lastly I really like how the light hits the trees in this photo and think it really make the trees come alive.

Light Observation 2

1)   3/7/11- 11 pm- Walkway in between dorms.

2)   There was an up light on a tree next to the walkway and the source was one of the street lamps.  It was a white light that spread a good distance.

3)   This lighting moment was good to me because it epitomized the idea of spooky lighting.  The streetlight shot light up underneath the tree and perfectly created long spooky shadows on the branches.  The tree had several branches and this helped the effect become more powerful.  The light that the streetlight emitted was white and that also contributed to the spookiness because the white light made it look harsh and scary.  This light spread throughout the whole tree and it was something you would see on Halloween as a decoration or something.  It really had that deep dark forestry feel and it was highly effective.  The other thing I noticed is that the branches were really only lit from one side and not the other.  This was hard to tell from a distance but when up close it was easy to see.  Overall it was a spooky moment.

Lighting Observation 1

1)   3/6/11- around 10 o’clock pm- walking from Lowe to the Library.

2)   The sky was an orange and yellow color.  It was cloudy and rainy and it was difficult to tell that it was actually cloudy.

3)   I was walking to print out photos and I glanced up at the sky.  It was then that I realized it was not the typical color I would expect.  I expected to look up and see black or grey because it was raining and it was nighttime.  Instead I looked up and saw this amazing orangeish yellow sky and it was so vivid.  It appeared to have no source but I figured that out to be the fact that the sky was cloudy.  It was a very interesting light because it reminded me of the sky in the picture Scream.  It had a warm feel to it, which I thought was very interesting because it was obviously raining and it was also cold.  The red, orange and yellow colors that were in it made it seem as though it was coming from the sun.  It was very similar to what a sunset would look like and it had many of the same qualities in terms of brightness, color and feel.

Happy Photo

2) Found from googling hot air balloons

3) Happy Photo

4) This photo of hot air balloons struck me as happy for a few reasons. First, the light is bright and crisp, it’s probably a great day for flying balloons. The sunlight is lighting up the whole valley and mountainside illuminating many verdant shades of green. It seems like a warm sunny morning where people are outside working or playing. The light is brightly reflecting off of each of the balloons showing all their rich colors. I think hot air balloons themselves create a whimsical and light-hearted mood that everyone can feel. Seeing a hot air balloon, slowly drifting through the sky, is enough to make me smile. The playful colors and idea of languidly watching the passing countryside makes me happy.
