2nd lighting observation

1) March 1st – 10:24 p.m – my common room: I had my second lighting moment on Tuesday night in my common room in Suffolk Hall.

2) Me and my room mates use a pink inclandestine lamp that stands in the corner of our common room. It doesn’t emit that much light but it’s better than turning on the fluorescent hanging lights.

3) On Tuesday night me and my room mates were watching the 20/20 Charlie Sheen interview. A part of the way through it we turned off the fluorescent lights and turned on our pink lamp. The lamp is bowl shaped and only uses about a 40 watt bulb. When we turned on the lamp the room instantly turned into a medium pink color. Since the light isn’t that bright the room at night gets much darker. As we were watching and the light changed it seemed to make the interview more intense. The color of the room made by the lamp felt fantasy like and other worldly. Which is exactly what I think is going on in Sheen’s head. The room took on a more intimate feel when the light changed. And it seemed to grow smaller. Its such a difference than when we have the fluorescent lights on. It’s more cozy and comfortable. The pink shown up toward the ceiling and made a circle like shape just above the lamp.

Photo Observation 5

2.) Photo from: http://www.wallpaperbase.com/animals-nightowl.shtml

3.) Theme: Nightlife

4.) I love this photo, because the colors are so saturated and beautiful. It fits nightlife because well, a night owl lives or rather is active predominantly at night! Plus, for one reason or another we all seem to associate this deep blue with night time, and the gold of the owl’s eyes really pop out against the dark background. Seeing this photo I am terrified for a moment at the prospect of being captured in the golden gaze, at once majestic and threatening. I can see the field mouse squirm as these sharp eyes train on the movement followed by sharp talons piercing their sides.

Lighting Observation for 3/4

Where: Front St

When: Late evening tuesday

Objective: The sun set created a background of oranges and reds behind a tree.

Subjective: The way the red and oranges shown through the branches of the tree, it almost looked as if it were on fire. It was a powerful effect that also brought out the shape of the tree by lighting the edges from behind.

Photo Observation

2) I took this photo last year while I was in Boston.

3) Theme: Nightlife

4) When I thought of nightlife I decided to go a little different than the party, neon lights scene.  I started to think about the people who work the night shift that kind of nightlife.  I really like this picture because of the lights in the skyscraper.  Not all of them are on which creates an interesting nightlife feel.  It makes me think that many people have gone home or are going home, like the cars rushing by at the bottom of the picture.  I really like that it emphasizes light that is present as well as light that is absent.  The other cool aspect of this picture is the street lamps.  When ever I see street lamps I automatically associate them with the night.  The low, yellowish glow of the streetlamps also give a night time feel.

Light Observation for 3/4

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Sunset, outside of Breslin on 2/27

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Someone short is walking across the walk outside of Breslin hall. The way they are walking, the sun is in their face and a long shadow is being cast behind them. They have very good posture, and they are wearing a long wool coat. The scenery in front of them is all clear, except for the trees in the distance, which the sun is setting over.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It feels as if this man is being chased by his own shadow, which is even more ominous from its size. Though his wool coat does not look intimidating, the shadow appears to be wearing a long trench coat. The shadow is slender, but twice the size of its “victim.” The scene feels imposing and foreshadowing.

Photo Observation for 3/4

From Flickr.com, by Zack Hughes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zamphotography/3276494623/

THEME: Night Life

DESCRIPTION: Though Nightlife can be classified as life as it goes on in clubs and bars at night, I felt that this was a more interesting take on the subject. The amount of movement evident in this photo makes the bustling Miami street seem even more active. Additionally, I feel like the bright colors used on the buildings make them seem even more magical and nightlife-esque.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 5)

1)   2/28/11 – about 1 o’clock pm – Outside of Bits

2)   The gray colored sky shining grayish colored light.

3)   I just finished getting lunch at bits and I walked out side.  While out side I found that the lighting was very emotional.  The light was gray and stark which gave a sad feeling and cold too.  The gray white color of the light, which seemed to come from a hidden source, reminded me of the fluorescent lights in our classroom and how when turned they make it feel like a prison, against the concrete walls.  They both had a similar color temperature and they really expressed a feeling of loneliness.  We have had a few rainy days here and there and they have had a similar light but for some reason this particular moment really got to me emotionally in terms of feeling the effects of the light.  This was an instance where light can really set the mood.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 5)

1)   2/27/11 – about 8:15pm – In front of Hofstra Hall

2)   A very yellowish light coming from inside Hofstra Hall, surrounded by darkness.

3)   This light really spoke to me because it reminded me of the movies and how I have seen several shots or scenes where everything is dark except for one warm yellow lighting source coming from inside some house or something.  This moment was full of relaxation and almost had a romantic feeling to it.  When first glancing at it I pictured someone sitting in a large arm chair, ready for bed, reading and there just being a fireplace or soft colored desk lamp illuminating the area.  The light was so warm feeling and cozy.  It was surrounded by the darkness outside that helped create a high contrast.  The moment was very fairytale like and it had a sort of fantasy like quality to it.  For some reason I am attracted to this kind of light, considering I have mentioned it before in a way and I think it just has a very inviting feel to it.
