Second Lighting Observation

Outside the Hofstra Fitness Center, February 12th, 5:35pm

Objective Description: The sun was mostly set by this point, so the big field by C Square was very dimly lit with orange/red light.

Subjective Description: I noticed how light it was when I left the building because I could still see the field across the street. Normally by 5:30pm, it was completely dark outside, so I was glad to notice the difference in sunset times lately. It wasn’t bright out by any means, but the last sliver of sun peaking out from the horizon casted a low red glow onto the snowy field, filling in the white space with an ominous smoky color. It almost appeared as if there was a heat source underneath the field, like a furnace or stove creating a dull glow on the snow.

Lighting Observation #2

  1. February 7th, 2025, 7:56pm, Adams Playhouse
  2. White light beam on center stage on a young girl dancing on stage
  3. I was sitting in the Adams Playhouse watching “Forces of Nature”. When the 3rd dance piece, Smoovement 3, comes on stage, it starts with a young girl alone on stage with one single white light beam in center stage. The only thing you can focus on is her and her movements. Our eyes weren’t allowed to move anywhere else. It was almost like she was being pulled into the light but her movements made sure she didn’t leave the light until the whole stage filled with a dark red light.

Photo Observation

Photo taken by me July 26, 2024 8:39, Citi Field, NY

Theme: Sunset/Sunrise

It was a nice warm night at Citi Field. The Mets are destroying the other team, and the whole stadium is electric. I think this photo is satisfying because all though everyone is focused on the game and in a completely lunatic mood, the sky is so calm and beautiful. It makes me think that even though life is hectic and busy it’s important to take a step back and look at beauty around you.

Photo Observation 1

From Miami Vice

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

This photo is from the TV show Miami Vice. It’s a sunset with palm trees in the foreground. This shot was used as a transition to set up the next scene and establish the environment of the show. The sky is yellow and it fades into orange with the sun still in the middle of the sky. The tree’s are dark and just a silhouette to give a striking contrast to the photo. This TV show takes place in Miami and has a lot of shots of the sunset over the ocean or over palm trees like this one, and many iconic stills from the show have the sunset in the background.

Photo Observation

August 4, 2024, Mt Hope Farm, Rhode Island

Sunrise/Sunset

I was working as a caterer at a wedding. It was around 8 PM and the light was reflecting on the dark water. I accidentally caught a couple in my photo who were less lit by the sunset and more by the artificial lights of the inside of the venue, Cove Cabin. I felt like the water was jumping into the light, pushing other areas down and away. I also see a pattern in the water with a pathway of light towards the shore and more of a rounded path to the right with darker areas on the left. The gradient above the water and behind the tree line of blue to pink to orange to yellow with clouds inserting themselves into the center of the light was a really beautiful, almost artistic sight to see.

Photo Observation 2/13

Photo taken by me, Orlando January 12th 2025 @ 6:16 P.M.

Sunrise/Sunset

As the sun sets on another hectic day with the whole family, the warm bright orange washes away any worries or troubles. The end of one day showing such beauty as the whole group knows the next brings more fun, arguments, and family vacation craziness. The bright yellows and oranges juxtapose the pale grey-blue sky. Despite the cold of the winter creeping its way into Florida’s typical heat, the warm skies are a reminder that it will always be warmer here than in the bitter cold of the north. Long days of walking and swimming and family dynamics make the calm of this sunset over the fountain the perfect time to reflect and know it is finally time to rest.

Photo Observation

Photo taken by me, in my hometown. August 2023 as the sunsets around 8pm

THEME: sunrise/sunset

DESCRIPTION: The sun is setting on a late summer day. It is my favorite time of year as my birthday is approaching, but that’s not the only reason. The Earth is warm from months of the longest days we will see all year round. The sun is big, golden and warm. This park on the Hudson is easily my favorite place, and the sun is telling enough as to why. The park allows you to look right out onto the horizon. Not only does the sun outstretch it rays to feel my skin, but I can see the rest of the sky being illuminated in every color.

Ed Carluzzo Sunrise

This photo is a still from the film The Midnight Sky (2020)

The theme is Sunrise/Sunset

A warm, bright, and vibrant sunrise breaks through the cold, heartless night sky as a father and daughter look forward to their uncertain future. The sunrise brings a new dawn, a new day, and new opportunities for the father and daughter to bond and overcome any hardships they may have to face, as with every sunset, there is a sunrise that follows.

Photo Observation #1

Sunrise/Sunset

  1. May 13th, 2018 @ 4:38 PM – Walt Disney World Resort, Florida – Taken by Me
  2. Sunrise/Sunset
  3. This photo was taken as the sun was setting in Disney in front of Cinderella’s castle. The orange and pink light reflects off the side of the castle clashing with the blue lights that illuminate the castle in the frame. The sunset makes this side of the castle appear shadowed framing the edges on the left just enough to emphasize the silhouette. It feels directly from a fairytale the sunset against the castle brings a warm anticipation to the image evoking feelings of romance and love.

Photo Observation #1

1) Photo taken January 2nd, 2025 at Smith Point Beach

2)Sunrise/Sunset

3)It was cold and windy, as it usually is by the beach. There weren’t many people walking around which was the perfect opportunity to lay out a beach chair and watch the sunset. I brought little hand warmers to stuff in my jacket pocket because I was freezing. The position in which the sun sets makes the amber light hit the ocean, and you can see it reflect off the ocean. You can even see the amber/orangish light hit and reflect off of parts of the sand. The sun lights up a good portion of the bottom half of the sky in an orange pinkish color, leaving the rest of the sky a bright blue color. The position of the sun also creates a cool effect on the clouds, light appears to hit the clouds from the bottom making them appear to have a pinkish color. My favorite thing about this picture is the way that the light hits the clouds and the shadows it gives it.
